I looked to see if there was a topic about this and didn't see one, but if I missed it, I'm sorry... I saw a trailer for this movie in Pirates 3 and me and my friend were "Oh my gosh, they're making a movie of this?!" The book series is awesome, though the movie looks questionable. If they keep to the book (as well as some other variables) then hopefully it'll turn out great, but...I hate to be a pessismist here, but deep down, I think it may turn out like Eragon. But hopefully, it won't be that horrible... It has a great looking cast Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel Sam Elliot as Lee Scoresby etc, etc, etc (and odly, according to wikipedia, the Master of Jordan College will be played by Jack Shepherd...who seems to share his name with Jack from Lost ) Anyway, I wonder how this'll turn out. And here's the trailer for anyone who wants to check it out: http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/thegold ... howVideo=1Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His_Dark_M ... en_Compass

I've started reading the book Northern Lights.. it's alright but doesn't really have much action so far. I guess it takes a bit of getting into.

This is some stuff I got from Wikipedia. -The film is based off the book series His Dark Materials, and there are 3 books. -The author (Pullman) is an agnostic (correct me if I'm wrong) who hates C. S. Lewis and his Narnia books. Pullman has accused Lewis of being "blatantly racist" and "monumentally disparaging of women" in his novels. -And at the end of the third book the people rebelled from God or "destroyed God/The Authority" and turned away from Him. -The trilogy shows the downfall of the Kingdom of Heaven, a hierarchy under the control of the Authority and his regent
Yeah... I wouldn't say it's similar to Narnia. This will be one film I WON'T be watching.

I'm going to miss this movie. Since I hardly read the book and another reason which I wish not to say.

So people don't care about a heavily Christian themed movie and book series (ie: Chronicles of Narnia) and then get in an uproar over an atheist movie and book series (even though the movie is watered down)? Don't listen to Mr. Donohue and the Catholic League...they're ani-semetic, racist, and close minded... See the movie and read the books for yourselves and make a decision if you agree or disagree with it on your own instead of allowing yourselves to be fed nonsense...

Well, knowing New Line Cinema like I do, I think it'll be a LOT better than Eragon. I mean, New Line Cinema produced Lord of the Rings, and that was probably one of the best adaptations of a fantasy novel I've ever seen! I also think that there's no excuse for it to be bad, since, according to the wikipedia article, the budget is freaking $205 million! Also, with the technology we have now, I think they could (in theory, at least) stay relatively close to the book.
As to the religious stuff, I seriously don't care about the religious beliefs of the author. I never, ever give that a thought when I pick up a book to decide if it's good. All I go by is the description on the back or inside cover.
I really wish I had read this book series, but I probably should. Most adapted movies are better if you read the book first. Maybe I'll watch the movie, then read the entire series over summer break. I don't really have the time to read a long book with my schoolwork, but I'll find the time. I didn't really think too much about this series until I saw the movie, which made it look a lot more awesome than I had previously thought. But I will eventually read the entire series, definitely before they make any of the sequels to this.

I haven't read His Dark Materials yet, I got pretty bored of it quickly after I picked up Northern Lights, but I'll be sure to read through it. From what I've seen from trailers and such it'll be very good, unlike Bridge to Terabithia T_T did anyone see that? It was insanely off-plot from the book, but we'll have to see...

I love Chronicles of Narnia, I have the books and just don't have time for reading them at the moment. I have also read Dragon Chronicles, which is a Christian book. Actually, what he's trying to say is to not decide if a book is worth reading or a movie is worth watching by only looking at the author's religious affiliations. It's fine that you read those, but the religious affiliations of the author is of extremely little relevance in how good his/her books are.

(I'm also a fan of Narnia, so I have nothing against it)
