I used to be one of those little boys who thought war was glamorous and heroic. I've never really got in touch of reality of the horrors that war brought. I read this book when I was 14 and it really changed my outlook on war.
The book has two parallel stories. One is about a Mormon boy from Utah who drops out of high school to join the Airborne. The other is about a Hitler Youth member who is promoted into the German infantry. Both boys had disillusions about war and soon came into reality once they faced the carnage of combat.
It's a really touching book and the ending kept me up all night. I highly suggest it.
