By name, what is your favorite orchestral music? A piece, that is written for an orchestra. It can include film scores, symphonies, concertos, suites, anything that is played by an orchestra! No, "orchestras" that play in, or back-up rock bands, or any of that sort do not count in this thread. Nor bands, solos, or duettes with solo instrument(s) and piano. But quartets, and trios may count, if it a major work.

Here is my list. "*" are posted next to pieces I have played in my orchestras. I have also included the composers' names. Inevitably, I will have forgotten a few, so this list will probably be updated frequently. :D If I have written *(...), the piece's name in the () is the only part I played, meaning I did not play the entire suite, symphony, etc.

(Will add later) means that I am looking up the composer's names in my files, and will add them... I couldn't recall them off the top of my head.

*Light Cavalry Overture.................................. Franz von Suppe
*5th Symphony............................................. Shastakovitch
*Candide Overture (Overture from "Candide).. Leonard Bernsetin
*March and Procession of Bacchus.................. (Will add later)
*Lancaster Overture...................................... (Will add later)
*Organ Symphony in C minor......................... Saint Saens
*(Farandole) L'Arsienne ................................. Bizet
* (Mars and Jupiter) The Planets...................... Gustav Holst
Pastorale Symphony....................................... Beethoven
*Capriccio Espagnol........................................ Rimsky Korsakov
*Hungarian march........................................... (Will add later)
*(Dream Pantomime, Evening Prayer) Hansel and Gretel... (Will add later)
*Ziguenerwiesen (Gypsy Airs)........................... de Sarasate
*Cello Concerto in b minor................................ Luigi Boccherini
* (IV mvt.) New World Symphony..................... (Will add later)
*Night in Mexico.............................................. Paul Creston
*Brandenburg Symphony................................ (Will add later)
*Finale (This is a quartet)................................ (Will add later)
The Lord of the Rings...................................... (Will add Later)
Ashokan Farewell........................................... (Will add later)
The Magic of Rain........................................... Danman :D

This is all I can recall at the moment... I know that there are TONS, absolutely TONS of pieces missing, so expect a major update at some point. :D

Include some pieces you have played in an orchestra, if you have!

The Planets by Gustav Holst is one of my favorite works. I like Mars and Jupiter the best out of the entire suite.

My favorite time period in classical period has to be the Baroque time (Bach, Vivaldi, that sorta bunch).

I tend to listen to older movie scores or scores featuring a lot of woodwinds or brass. Most things we do in Concert Band, so we have to switch some things around due to no strings. Examples?

March from "1941"---> Okay, this was a given. We're playing it in Band and I have...or had...a solo horn cue. I'm missing the performance due to a horse show so I lost it lol
Theme from "Schindler's List"---> Love the violin part! Again, did it in Concert Band but we have no strings, so we had a clarinet soloist. With what we had it sounded cool
"Midway March"--> Band thing. Our trumpets sound amazing, but for a while I had to play baritone part because there was no tenor sax part XD
"Rumble On The High Plains"--> One word. Percussion.
"Hymn To The Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan"---> During our concert, we played this and at the very end, with the last bass drum, there was a clap of thunder. So cool.

I try to use that kind of stuff when I compose my stuff lol

Cool! Nice one, lots of information, great post! Interesting that he thunder hit the same time as the bass drum: They sound very similar, sometimes, I think

A Holst fan!!! :salut:  Same here, I just played Mars and Jupiter in an orchestra of 100+ musicians... it was the best thing EVER, one of the best memories I have, and ever will have! We were playing with proffessional players too, and that was amazing, I picked up so much from watching and listening to them all... :D They are my favorite, as well. My next favorite would be between Venus, Saturn (I feel a bit depressed, I don't know why, when I hear this one) and Mercury, I think.

The whole "Wallace and Gromit: the Curse of the Were-Rabbit" soundtrack is amazing, and the track "Dog Fight" is incredible. Have you ever laughed out loud while listening to instrumental music? This track has literally made me^^

That "Hobbit" soundtrack that I mentioned in the soundtrack thread is also a beautifully orchestrated score (did anyone download it? If you haven't already, you should!) that I could just listen over and over again (and have).

LOTR- WOW. That's all I have to say. WOW.

Nice! Actually, when we were playing the Candide Overture by Bernstein, I would start grinning at this one point, for no apparent reason... but I love the piece.
