Warning all Pet owners!

Sometimes accidents happen to our pets than we could never have imagined. Some items are dangerous that you would never have thought about.

One of these is paper shredders I recently received 2 e-mails about this from an American pet website (http://www.petplace.com). full articles can be read on http://www.petplace.com/search.aspx?c=0 ... &x=53&y=14.

In one case a Labrador pup licked a paper shredder accidentally turning it on and getting is tongue caught and seriously mangled. He died from his injuries.
In another case a pit-bull/Labrador cross suffered a similar problem she lost her tongue but survived and now, despite losing her tongue, can drink, use her voice and has a good quality of life. These are not the only incidents of this happening, and not only to dogs.

So unplug your paper shredder or put it out of reach.

To put shredders away is simply common sense.(Though many lack it.) It can be dangerous to babies, or even to the careless adult.

Excactly what I was going to say.

What sort of idiot leaves a shredder plugged in and out in the open? Our shredder is put back in the cupboard, turned off and unplugged from the mains immediatly after we've finished using it.

I dont have a shredder- But alot of my friends do so i'll tell them. And tongue getting stuck in a shredder? That sounds REALLY painful DX

Umm, am I the only one to question a pet's ability to turn on a shredder accidentally and the chances of it to start licking it? I don't know about your personal experiences, but my cat has never managed to turn on a shredder (and believe me, I have two cats that used to climb and jump right on the shredder button). Nor has my dog, who always chased the cats over the shredder.

Furthermore, my two cats are easily scared by strange noises-cats that grew up being chased by a dog. If the shredder did turn on, my cats would run away. Also, when my dog was young, it was frightened by fireworks, gunshot sounds, and strange noises. So even if the shredder magically turned on, both my cats and my dogs would run away.

But those are my experiences.

"Well I've had my .357 loaded, on the nightstand next to my bed, for years, and I've never had a problem..."

All I can say is, better safe than sorry. I'd rather put my paper shredder away and get it out every time than have my dog get it's tongue mangled. Just seems like a wise plan to me.

No one if a grave robber got into the tomb o: But yes, of course, better safe than sorry. I am saying it isn't that likely to happen, at least for my dogs, but we don't have a shredder near them anymore anyways P: .
