I was in Science class and we were talking about cell's reproducing ( :pukel: ) but anyway we got on the topic about pure breeding dogs. This is how my teacher explained it:

Two dogs from the same breed make puppies who breed with different breeds. Then their puppies breed with the GRANDPARENTS????

Is this true or is my teacher telling fib? :?

If it is I think its gross! Shouldn't we be embracing different dogs because they're their own breed?

Tells me your thoughts and if you think this "theory" is true.

Eep. I remember that subject last year :shock: :lol:

And didn't you kno that incest isn't bad for dogs??? In fact, quite alot of sexual (SORRY) relatonships iwth dogs are incest, mating with brothers, sisters, cousins... I kno. It's pretty gross

But... mating with grandparents??? That's pretty weird... and pretty sick...

I actually don't kno if he was lyin' or not. But teachers aren't known for lyin' about stoof like that...

Weird

Its a fib pure breeding doesn't cause as many problems as when you mix to breeds like the new one labordoodle bad breed labs and poodle's have a lot of problems

Anyways what does it matter there all equal! Just like we are. if pure breeding is wrong then its like saying someone whose black and some whose white can't get married or someone of a different country can't get married to someone who is from another country.

dogs don't have a concept of incest. And it's better because the dogs have less health problems.

I am a firm believer in pure breeding dogs. I am not into breeding dogs from the same litter however. I believe that if you're going to breed your dog, you should carefully check the dogs "family tree" to make sure that you aren't breeding with another dog that is "related" to your dog. Just my thoughts though.

It's a mistake to think there is no such thing as inbreeding with dogs, inbreeding just causes less problems than it would do with humans becuase we apply eugenics to dogs.
The problems usualy associated with inbreeding are a result flawed recesive genes which are more likely to appear as doubles (ff) on a subject when the subject is inbred (because relatives that inbred both carried the recesive flawed gene), thus causing the externalisation of the flawed recessive genes.

In dogs, however, human selection is so strict that dogs carrying flawed genes (even when they are masked by dominant genes (fX), which can become apparant after breeding that results in recesive-recesive gene pairs (ff)) are eleminated from the gene-pool; if both dogs have only perfect genes, even inbreeding won't result in recesive flawed gene pairs (in the short term).

f=flawed recesive
X=dominant non-flawed
fX (relative) + fX (relative) = ff (problem)/fX/XX ->inbreeding
fX (relative) + XX (non relative) = fX/XX ->non inbreeding
XX (perfect-gene relative)+ XX (perfect-gene relative) = XX -> inbreeding but without problems
note: none-relatives can also carry a ff-pair, but this is less likely than with relatives

Uh.. well, I agree with purebreeding myself. I love cross-breeds but it is nice to see purebreds. Although, there can be inhumane breeding of purebreds. I prefer it to happen more naturally than how you described, CarribbeanLady. But yeah, I like to see purebred dogs.
