What do yall think of this? Canada and the US Congress and Senate want to form a North American Union.. Basically- free trade between the North american countries, no passports needed to travel in the NA area. Also, standardized money, and so on. Is this a good idea, what would it affect, and your opinion.[/quote]

I think looking at the European Union it would be good because the currency of all three countries would raise. I have not heard anything about it yet, any links?

I dunno. I think the 'you must have a passport' is a good one. Or am I just stupid?

Coming from a collector of Money, a new currency would be amazing.

I wish that there would be one. It could make certain things much easier and less complicated. New currency would be nice too. Hopefully it might actually be worth something, unlike our currency right now.

I don't think that will ever happen in the near future: I doubt Québec would support a union with the US, and if Canda pushed it through either way, chances are they'd cecede.

Well, I see some potential roadblocks to this. First, as someone stated earlier, Bloc Quebequa (pardon my spelling, I don't speak French), the independence party from Quebec would probably not be interested in a union with the US. Heck, they barely are interested in a union with the rest of Canada.

Secondly, the United States has a GNP that is vastly far ahead of both Mexico's and Canada's. Essentially, to make an equitable union where each country got representation proportional to their economic power, the United States would get a huge number of votes. In essence, if it were fair, it would essentially require Canada and Mexico to become virtual states (for the record, I wouldn't be opposed to adopting any Canadian provinces as states of the Union, if any wanted to join the party animal that is America). I don't think Canada or Mexico would go for this.

Thirdly, I'm not sure, but the value of American currency is low right now. I'm not sure Canada would be interested in having to devalue their own currency so that we could adopt a new one. This is precisely why England has never joined the EU. It's not a good economic move for them.

Fourthly, America values its independence very highly. We don't like other countries having a say in how we do our business, either politically or economically. I can only imagine that other countries could lean on America through some sort of union agreement and influence American politics.

Fifthly, the no passports clause seems to open the door for any Tom, Dick, or Harry to simply waltz across the borders. There are enough problems with illegal drugs coming into America from Mexico as it is, I can only imagine this would make things worse. This is not to mention the problem with undocumented workers and possible terrorists coming in from other places.

In total, I can think of 5 reasons off the top of my head why this won't be happening. I could probably think of more if I sat and thought about it hard, but for now, I can't see any sort of North American Union happening in our lifetimes.

well, lets hope that quebec doesnt decide that they are too good for the rest of the world. they have been isolated for too long. they should realize it would be in their best interest to not fight.

Ya they're pretty seperated from us. Believe that they are another country or something. But I think the rest of Canada would go for it. I just don't like the taking away the passport laws thing. They're good as they are, I think.

yeah i heard something recently about quebec wanting to secede. also, they are AWFUL drivers. we get some here occasionally, they obviously dont know any US laws. running red lights, cutting people off, jsut all around bad driving. anyway, i want to go to canada, but in order to do so, i have to buy a passport for $80 USD. we shouldnt have to spend that. i think so anyway
