 Post subject: Cats...
PostPosted: Mon Apr 30, 2007 1:55 am

I was just wondering, were cats (the small type) meant to be skilled hunters? Both of my cats catch a few mice each day on average, and just today one caught a RABBIT. They are becoming far better hunters, as if they always had that skill but never used it o_O...

So again, were cats meant to be hunters?

All cats (yes, from pantherines to domestic cats ;) ) are excellent hunters - probably the most efficient terrestrial hunters known. In fact too efficient, so that feral cats, for example, seriously endanger ecosystems.

No, That's just how they were bred. Small cats aren't hunters.

Oh dear... then you have to explain me why my neighbour's cat always catches and kills rats.

Any cat is a predator... even if you don't let them go outside your house - as their play always sticks to predatory behavior.

All cats are born hunters. It's in their blood; it's genetic. Most animals that are wild and hunt (such as wolves, tigers, big cats..etc) have domesticeted forms (dogs and cats) that hunt as well. The domesticated animals are just decendents, but have similar traits. If a cat sees an animal as prey and worth catching, it will go after it. It's all instinct, it's all genetic. Dogs howl, wolves howl, they both know how to hunt. But the main reason you'd rarely see a dog or cat hunt something/someone is because they're domesticated. But they can't help it.

To get to the point, yes, cats are skilled hunters.

Yes cats are meant to be hunters. Any animal with fangs, claws can kill animals for prey.

Yes, I suppose...but I didn't think an already tame animal would have instincts that go back to its ancestors.

Then, why do they still hunt to this day ? Everyone's got something that's genetic that goes back thousands of generations. Humans, for example. We've created tools in the stoneage, we still do it know. We know how to hunt if necessary, maybe not with the same weapons, but we still hunt.
We're animals too, as are cats.

Maybe most of cat has changing their behaviour because human teach them to eat (pet food), not to hunt, but look at wild cat, they still have pure skill for hunting, is that right? :?

Well, that's the point of being domesticated. Sure, cats each pet food and are trained over the thousands of years to be pets, but there's still that wild side inside of them.
