Do you really think Balto's mother was pure white? Wouldn't you agree that it could be more reliable if she'd lost her markings becoming a ghost? As she can change herself into other creatures of different colors, she could've lost her real color as she's no longer living. Of course, that's just imagination, may be I'm wrong, may be I'm right, but surely there is an explanation of making Balto's mother white. I'm sure most of people agree that it's not really right that Balto's mum is pure white, so... What's your version of Aniu? I'd like to see how do you find Aniu more reliable to be Balto's mother, what do you think she could look like if "she'd lost her markings" XD

Here is my own version of Aniu. She doesn't have that much changes but still I think you can match some colors from her to Balto's.
Image
She's light grey, with grey patches around her eyes (what Balto inherits from her, getting the patches AND the color of them on his belly) The color of her eyes are a bit lighter than Balto. I'll write about her and Tyke (my versoin of Balto's dad) someday.

Hmm...I could've sworn Nava described her as 'the great white wolf'...but, I could be wrong XD *didn't pay much attention to WQ*

I really like yours, Beauty_Jenna :D I might make a version of Aniu....

If it were up to me, I'd change her entire look completely XD They only made Aniu white because its a "mystical color" which is not mystical enough for a wolf because, HELLO? Arctic wolves are white, people  They needed to think about this stuff XD Nothing was ever special about a white wolf in general, even as a child we know that (well, if you were into animals as a child). But since Balto's mother has "officially" been dubbed a white wolf, I made her look like this

http://youtube.com/watch?v=eOsawr6QukE

She is all white, and has the yellow of Balto's eyes, but since I made Balto have his father's iris color, I personally made her irises just a darker gold than the rest of her eye. She's all white, and the lines on her face are just for character, only her eyes and ears are a shade darker than the rest of her fur. Her build is pretty much like Balto's only more feminine, and she is bigger than him.

You do have a point about the death-and-loss-of-color thing, but in Balto 2, before 'Aleu' runs away, he says "I remember she was as white as snow."

And as appointed above, Nava described her as "the great white wolf", though, how do we know Nava knew her when she was alive?

I like your look for her WAY better than I do Universal Studios's (it's more believable).

My only question is, no one ever said how/when she died (or did they? o_O), so how do WE know she's DEAD? We can only assume by her ghost-like appearences right? Well, who's to say she's not a Shamanic (XD) Wolf?

Meh, pardon my antics. But I do approve of your point. Pure white would call for Albino, and no way could an Albino live in Alaskan sun (summer? .-.) with how bright they showed it in B 2: WQ (Balto 2: Wolf Quest for those who don't know >_>).

Kirada --> You're probably right about what Balto said in the movie and you're also right about the point that we don't know if Nava saw Aniu after or before her death. I think there was somewhere mentioned about Aniu's death but I can't remember where (sorry, my memory), and as I said above, this is only my imagination, my explanation (quite more reliable, because...Balto's mother white? Anyway...)and as they made her a ghost which changes into whatever-colored things she could've been different color before. If she'd been all white while being alive, they should have made the raven white, and the fox white too. And yes, you're right about the Albino wolves, I don't think they would survive in Alaskan sun (maybe I'm wrong, maybe not...) But there are also Arctic wolves...I don't know...may be she was an Arctic wolf, they've got me really confused right now...O_o At least my imagination works XD

There's also a possibility that they made her loose her color from the beginning (since she was born), but the idea of that would be taken from lions which do loose color sometimes (that's how white lions are formed) so...we really don't know.

CatWhoHas14Tails --> I know, she would be put into cat's famous surgery XD And she WOULD look WAY better XD (I think that's a good idea, and I'd like to see her here ;D)

Well, here's my version of Aniu.

Image Done with colored pencil, sharpie and #2 pencil.

To break up the monotony, I gave her black tip ears, black tipped tail and black back paws.
She's also not so white ^^; If you own a white animal, you know how easy they can get dirty. Aniu's fur is stained with dirt, blood and other things.
You'll also notice she's extremely thin. In my fic, "Return of Father", Aniu is on the brink of starvation before she is killed.

Enjoy :D

You have a point, though. But it's proven (duh) that an Albino's eyes cannot withstand sunlight without being damaged to a certain extent.

As to color change: it's in horses too. My aunt had a horse, who when he was a colt, was a reddish-black (auburn but more black) and when he grew up, he was pure black.

So who knows? Maybe Aniu was white, maybe Balto has let the goose go to his head.

rolla_wolf9 --> I really like her. I like how you matched the markings to Balto, she's cool XD

Kirada --> Color change is a feature of every animal (may be not every, but most) but loosing color is different. White lions were normal lions which lost color in fact of something in their parents genes or something, I can't explain it, but the fact is they were white since they were born and thier parents were normal color. With people is same sometimes. I've read an article about black people's family, who had 3 children and all of them were white though parents were black. They all had ginger hair and the same color of eyes. May be with wolves can happen same thing, I don't know.
