"Mama! Mama!" A little girl called as she rushed towards the box. "Mama!!!" She squealed again as she peered into the box. Four pairs of eyes peered back up at her, and she giggled. One pup, a Red and white coloured one, jumped up towards her as she leaned her head in. The little girl laughed, and smiled, pushing the puppy away slightly. Finally, the little girls mother was at her side. The little girl looked over, before her attention was grabbed by the puppy.
"Now, Rosie..." Her mother began, before it was interrupted by the playful laughing of the little girl, named Roise. Roise picked up the red pup, holding her in her arms. Her smile was very wide, and she looked so proud. Soon, Rosie's father came over. He laughed slightly, and stood by Rosie's mother. Rosie's mother sighed.
"Can I keep 'er, Mama? Please! Oh please, let me keep her!" Rosie pleaded to her mother. Rosie's mother glanced over towards her husband, and he smilied slightly, looking at the puppy, and then back to his wife. She sighed, and then turned back to her daughter.
"Okay, Rosie. You can keep her. But only her." Her mother warned. Rosie jumped with glee, holding the puppy close to her heart.
"It's getting late, you two. We need to get home." Came her fathers voice, breaking her away from her jumping around. She smiled, and walked over to them, and they began their walk home. They made it in good time, just as the sun away about to fade away, leaving them with night. When they walked in the door, Rosie let the pup from her arms, to run around the house. Rosie smiled as the pup sniffed around, her little tail wagging.
"Take your coat off dear." Rosie's mother said to her before Rosie could run off. She huffed, and flung if off, leaving it on the floor. She ran over and the pup made a squeaking noise in surprise as Rosie snatched her up. She ran over to the kitchen with her, and then set her down.
"Stay, girl!" Rosie said, as she went and attempted to climb up on the counter. Rosie's father walked in, and sighed.
"What do you think you're doing little one?" He asked, as he picked her up from behind, pulling her down. She laughed, and tried to pull away.
"Papa!" She giggled as she was set down. "I want to get my puppy a bowl of food and water!"
"Then ask." He said, as he went into the cubboard, and pulled out two dog-like bowls. Rosie smiled as she looked at him. He looked back for a moment as he set one bowl down, and went towards the sink.
"Do you have a name for her yet?" He asked her.
"No, not yet!" Rosie said excitedly. He laughed as he filled the bowl with some water, and then turned, handing it to her. Rosie giggled as she took the bowl, setting it down for the puppy, who had stayed in the kitchen, watching them closely.
"Here girl!" Rosie exclaimed, setting the bowl not far from her. The puppy's tail began to wag again and she julted forward, lapping at the cool water. Rosie laughed more, and then turned to her father.
"Papa, I don't know what to name her." She said, in a slight sad tone. He frowned slightly, and rubbed her head.
"Don't worry, you'll think of something." He said, smiling. He then turned back, and grabbed the other bowl. He put some chow in it, and then set it down near the water bowl. Once that bowl was set down, the pup switched over to it, and chomped down on the kibbles. Rosie giggled more, smiling wide. Her father smiled slightly too, happy to see his daughter so cheerful.
"When the pup is done, its time for bed, Rosie." Her father said to her, leaving the kitchen for a moment. Rosie sighed, and sat down on the kitchen floor, watching the pup eat her food. Rosie's mind was trying to find a suitible name for her, but didn't seem to find one. She was very fustrated at this point. Once the pup had decided she was done, she wriggled over to Rosie, playfully licking at her face and chin. Rosie laughed, and picked up the puppy as she got up.
"Rosie, time for bed." Her mother said, walking past the kitchen.
"I know, Mama!" She said, walking back towards her bed. She set the pup down in her room, and grunted as she got undressed, and into her nightgown. She smiled as she looked at the pup, and got into her bed.
"Come here girl! Come here!" She called, smiling, as she patted the bed. The pup ran over, and attempted to jump on the bed, but was just to short. Rosie's father laughed as he came in the room. He walked over, and pushed the pup onto the bed, and she cuddle up near Rosie. Rosie smiled at her father, and he leaned over, and kissed her on the head goodnight.
"Good night, Rosie. Sweet dreams." He said. Rosie smilied, and cuddled herself down, hugging onto her puppy. Her father blew out the light, and then left, closing the door but half way. Then he returned to his and his wife's bedroom. Rosie closed her eyes, dozing, as she again tried to think of a name for her new puppy. None came. She yawned, and thought she'd think of it tomorrow. And with that, she fell asleep.
Nearly a week had past, and Rosie still could not think of a name for her puppy. It just didn't come to her at all. She had no idea what to name the pup. So, for now, Rosie called her 'pup', but hoped to think of just the right name soon.
The next morning, Rosie awoke with a jult, rushing out of bed quickly. She jumped around quickly, rushing out of the room. The still nameless pup looked up, and blinked lazily. She noticed that Rosie had gone, so she jumped to her feet quickly, attempting to jump off the bed, but ending up rolling as she did so. She whimpered slightly, getting up, as she rushed out of the room. She went into the living area, and barked her puppish bark as she spotted Rosie. Rosie was jumping around near her mother, and her father was at the kitchen table. The little barked again as she rushed into the kitchen. Rosie looked down, and laughed, smiling. She patted the puppy on the head, and then the pup noticed her food. She rushed over to the bowl, and began to nosily chow down on her meal.
Rosie's mother sat at the table after she had gotten breakfast ready, and they were about to enjoy it. Rosie jumped once more, before she sat at her chair, and waited patiently. The pup sat down, licking her chops as she had finished her breakfast. She looked towards the front door, and it seemed to be not shut all the way. The pup went over as the humans enjoyed their meals. She let out a soft whimper as she approuched the door. She nosed at the door, and then pushed on it slightly with a paw. It was very heavy. She grunted, and then pushed with all her might on it, and it opened! She smiled, and wagged her tail. She barked, and rushed out, smiling. No one noticed that she had slipped out, or that the door was open even in the slightest for her to get out.
A sharp cool breeze hit her nose, and she wriggled it, attempting to look at her nose. She let out another soft bark, her tail wagging. She wasn't too sure about this place, but she wanted to know more. She leaped forward, before pausing. She looked back to see if her girl was coming too. But no one came. So she then rushed forward at a slow puppish gallop. She let out a bark that was almost as if she was laughing. She paused again, sticking her head high up in the air, her tail wagging swiftly. She saw a young bird fly through the air, just above her head, and she barked, and rushed after it as it flew away. She was rather amazed by these things that could hover above her, so she followed it.
That whole day, she rushed around exploring what she had no idea about. She saw lots of other dogs, and some that looked close to her! She smiled wide, in a very dog-like smile, as her tail wagged as she looked at everyone. Some even tried to stop and pet her. She was very friendly, and enjoyed these strange human's attention. By the end of the day, she was rather tired, and wanted to go home now. She looked around, unsure of which way to go. She whimpered in confusion. She plopped down, and let out loud long whimpers. She did not want to go any further, she might never get back.
Something moved near the pup, and she looked to her side, whimpering and slightly shivering. It was dark now, and everything looked so strange and scary. She longed for the warm bed of her girls. She saw it move again from behind some trees, and she backed up slightly. A big black dog, bigger than any she had ever seen, appeared from the dark. The only thing that she noticed about him, was his red bandana and his big glowing yellowish eyes. He looked at the pup, and she looked terrified. But his eyes seemed to hold her in place. She whimpered loudly.
"What are you doing way out here pup?" He asked her. She whimpered more, and turned slightly. He jumped forward, right in her way, so she could not get away.
"I would not run if I were you. There is worse out there." He said, motioning around him. He lowered his head near hers, smiling softly, letting her know he was not going to hurt her. She whimpered more. He frowned.
"Whats wrong?" He asked.
"I'm lost!" She whimpered. "I can't find my girl!" She said, whimpering more. He sighed, and gently nuzzled on the top of her head.
"Well, pup. We wont find her now. Its to dark. But, we can look for her tomorrow, I promise. But now, we need to sleep. I'll protect you." He said to her. His voice was deep, and comanding, yet sweet and caring. Somehow she felt as if she could trust him. His pelt was rather scraggly looking, and he was very large. At this point, he picked her up by her scruff and carried her back to an alley where a bunch of old crates lay. One was opened in the front, and that is the one where he went too. He set her down, and nuzzled her into the box, before laying down to keep the cold from gettng in the crate. He licked her head once, and she whimpered more.
"Hush now, and sleep." He said, as he laid his head down. She whimepred and moved up against him, cuddling herself close. He opened his eyes, smiling gently, before closing them again. He let out a huff, and then the two drifted off into a sleep. They slept all night, and for part of the day. He awake slowly, yawning, attempting not to wake the pup yet. He pulled away slowly, leaving her in the crate while he got up and stretched out his body. At the end of his stretch, he shook his pelt free of debre. He yawned slightly, and then shifted back to where the pup was sleeping.
The large dog laid himself back down, just outside the crate, watching all that was going on outside the alley. Minutes pasted, and still the pup did not awake. He sighed, and laid his head on his paws, watching people pass, not even noticing him. Then, a large black and white husky, followed by two malamutes, one a mix and one pure, passed. The dogs fur stood on end, and he watched closely to see if they would notice him. The mix happened to glance to the side and notice. He let out a laugh, and yelled back to the other two.
"Gore! Hey! You guys! Look what we have here!" He laughed, and waited for the two to back track. They did, and when Gore, the black and white husky, peered back, his expression filled with delight.
"Well, look who it is! Our little half-breed mutt!" Gore laughed, and the three came back towards him. The black dog got to his paws, and growled, standing his ground against the three. Gore laughed more.
"You can't take us!" One of the others laughed. Gore smiled, and grunted.
"You're gonna die, half-breed!" Gore growled, and lunged forward at the dog. He shifted to the side, managing to grip into Gore's side. But, Gore also managed the same, but not such a good lock as the black dog had on him. The black dog pulled back, twisting Gore offa him, throwing him. As he threw Gore, the other two lunged at him. Gore quickly recovered, and returned to his assult on the black dog. At this point, it was nearly hopeless. The black dog was out numebered. The little pup had awoke, and now sat awake to watch the flare of fangs and the gushing of blood. The faught for a good five mintues before Gore fell to the ground, limp and lifeless. Blood dripped from the black dog's fangs as he went for the other two. At this point, the two dogs fled. They would not risk it, even if he was very weak now. He colapsed after the two dogs left. He grunted, his body bleeding badly. The pup rushed out, tears running down her cheeks.
"Dont leave me! Please dont leave me!" She begged. She did not want to see him die. He grunted again, and got up slowly. He could not set his right leg to the ground - it has been snapped in half, and was very painful at the moment. But through all this, he was able to smile. He slowly leaned down, nearly tipping over, as he picked her up by her scruff. Her fur matched the colour of the blood that covered him in many places. He noticed, but he didn't think she had. He slowly hopped away from the alley, bleeding in all. He went through the back of town, through the trees, as so no one would see him. It took him all day to get her back to her house, which took forever to find. But she still smelt of her home - so he just followed his nose. As he came to the pups house, he went to the front in clear light - which was gone at this point. It was night once again. He grunted as he made it too her front door. He scratched at the door the best he could, nearly crying out in pain. He put the pup down, and barked. And he barked loudly. He laid down in front of the door, and sighed.
"I fought for you, pup." He said, still smiling. He pulled off his red bandana, and set it over the pup. "Here, you keep this. Where I am going, I wont need it." He said, smiling. Blood dripped into the ground below him, and he laid his head on his paws. Beneath the red bandana, was a leather collar, nearly covered by his scruffly pelt. It had a tag on it. But of course, the pup had no idea what it said.
"Take care of yourself..." He said, closing his eyes tightly. A light flickered on as his breathing slowly stopped, and he went limp. The door opened, and their appeared Rosie and her mother. Her mother gasped at the limp dog before them, but Rosie saw her puppy right away, and squealed.
"My puppy!" She explaimed, grabbing her.
"Oh, John! John! Get out here!" Her mother called, gasping at the site. Within moments, Rosie's father had appeared, and he was just as shocked at the site. Rosie had picked up her puppy, and finally noticed the dead dog before them. She just stared, and so did the pup. The pup whimpered, and wanted to cuddle back against her friend. Rosie looked at the bandana that was around her puppy, almost falling off because it was to big for her.
"I think this was that dogs..?" Rosie said, mostly to herself. Her father went outside, as he had slightly noticed the collar. He looked around, and found the tag. It read "JET" in big letters. He looked over to Rosie and her mother.
"All it says is JET." Rosie sighed, and then it came to her.
"Jenna!" Rosie exclaimed. "I will name her Jenna!" Rosie said, proud of her self. Her father laughed, and Rosie's mother patted her head.
"What do we do with it?" Her mother asked.
"I'll burry him. In the backyard." He said, nodding. He looked at the collar for a moment.
"He brought her home, Mama! He brought Jenna home for me!" Rosie said cheerfully, and for the first time that day, Rosie's mother smiled.
"Why, yes. Yes, he did." Her mother said, still smiling. Her father then smilied, and removed the collar. He got up, and handed it to Rosie.
"Here." He said. "Keep it to remember him by. Jenna would be lost without him." He finished, smiling still at her. She took it, and smiled back.
"Lets get some sleep. We'll burry him tomorrow. Take him out back for now." Her mother commanded, and Rosie's father nodded, and went to work. Rosie sighed, and took her and Jenna back inside. Her mother closed the door, and told her she needed to get to bed now. Rosie obliged, and went back with Jenna. She took the collar, and hung it above her bed before she cuddled herself in. She put Jenna on the bed, and fixed the bandana, so it would fit better on her.
"There you go girl." Rosie said smiling. Then her mother walked in to wish her goodnight. Her mother blew out the light, and then shut the door nearly half way.
"Goodnight, Jenna." Rosie whispered. And even though Rosie would never know, Jenna wished her goodnight too.
"Thank you, Jet." Jenna whimpered to herself, closing her eyes, and drifting to sleep, back at home with her girl. She wished Jet could have shared this with her.
But he was. In her heart. He kept his promise, and brought her home to her girl. And that, that is what was important to Jet. May his soul rest in peace.
