Oh yea, brother, I see your point here.
What I find wrong with it:
1.) Hackers will be unbanned/rebanned and able to reik havok on the innocents, who will also get banned for getting hacked.
2.) More stress on the mods (like you said).
3.) More people to keep track of, more people to keep "control" of.
4.) More fights.
5.) More trouble for Steet, as well (i.e. Complaints).
Personally, I'm all for the 'eternal ban' if the person deserves it. Now, if this is for minor 'crimes', then I think the rule would be okay (i.e. I couple of swear words). But, if it pretains to all members, it's like you said, rules will be broken left and right and backwards and forwards. Then, the site's member rate would go down because of: theives, hackers, rude people, fights, etc.

Ok, so let me give the reasons why I've done this.
1/ It's very difficult to ban someone without risking to ban innocent people. And this has already happened. In fact, I suspect that some visitors who come on the site for the first time, are banned immediately because their ip addresses is close to someone else who is banned. (so obviously, they won't even try to stay on the site) I won't explain in details, but now there is the possibility to ban with the exact same ip, which will make things much better on this point. So we need to get rid of the "old" bannings.
2/ Do you know how long a month is? Have you just imagined leaving the site for one month? I know for myself that I couldn't bare it. Many banned people were banned for months THE FIRST TIME they were banned...I had to put a limit to that.
3/ Banning someone for one month or one year will not make any change for the banned person. In fact, it can get even worse, because if they are permanently banned, it will make them angry and they will try to find any possible way to get "outside". You never know what people can be capable of when they are furious.
4/ Mods can ban someone again for one month, if they feel it's necessary.
5/ The mods can not ban for more than one month, but I can. If the mods think someone need to be banned permanently, I can examinate this myself and do it.
6/ These whole changes came with guidelines on how to deal with the banned members, even though they don't seem to follow them much unfortunately.
7/ See the new "report to the mods" function? Well this could make things easier for the mods, because they won't have to check the shout boxes as often as before, and because they will be able to see what happened even when they're not on.
Quote: 5.) More trouble for Steet, as well (i.e. Complaints).
No...That's the total opposite. I haven't received any complaint message about this since I made these changes, while I constantly received complaints from banned people before.

I think you took what I said the wrong way.
People who "hate" each other will now be in contact again, and the person who didn't get banned will complain because their "mortal enemy/enemies are back and out to get them!" or whatever the case may be.
OR: Another fight starts and people complain about that.
Though, I do see your point to the rule, and I was fairly closed-minded to it without thinking about all of the prospectives on the situation...

These new banning rules worry me.
I'm not a mean person in the SB but I've had my problems with people. I have never been banned because the mods saw that I was trying to get the other person to stop. But If someone I know of gets unbanned, I'm pretty sure they are gonna cause A LOT of trouble. I of course won't say the name... but if this person comes back, I know of at least a few members that WILL leave the site. Members that don't cause any trouble.

The thing that most of you don't seem to understand, is that you don't solve anything by banning someone. At least, not only that way. It's all a psychological thing. If the banned person don't recognize his faults, then banning him for one day or one year won't make any difference. When he will get out, he'll do the same things again, and the longest he's been banned, the worse he will act.
That's why I wrote these guidelines to the mods. Their only way of solving things was to threaten the banned members. (the "If you don't stop whining, I'll ban you for longer" way) This definitely can't work. There are finest ways to solve things, but this would be a bit long to explain.

Ok, I see the problem. Some of you fear that the people who were banned "because" of you, will get to you and make bad things. Well, dare they try, and they'll get rebanned immediately. But, this also means that you don't want to give a new chance to some members that you did talk to, that you probably appreciated at some point.

Quote: This has really bugged me, too. I now realize that we were probably banning some members for longer amounts of time than were necessary, but some of the members that we've banned were hackers, stalkers, pedophiles, sexual predators, and constant troublemakers who need to stay banned forever for the security of this site. I'm now very worried that they're running around the site again and possibly causing trouble.
exactly! you said it way better than me tho.

Dingo is right there are somethings the deserve severe punishment, like hackers, and constant troublemakers. But then there are people that have done things they can fix like Cussing, spaming, or stealing art.
So long as they can show they have changed.

Point made. Why you want to risk THAT by unbanning everyone is beyond me.

Everyone deserves another chance... even mulitple ones. I can't type much right now.. but I'll back this up later.
You are right! All of our murders are harmless now that they have spent some time away from everyone! They all should be let out because they don't deserve to sit in a cell all day and night for the rest of their life. They only killed a few people, why suffer so long?

That's totally different. Nobody in the banned box has killed anyone, fortunately...And they wouldn't be able anyway. Because it's a site, not real life. Of course, that's as long as you don't give any personal information.
Quote: hackers, stalkers, pedophiles, sexual predators
You make it sound like everyone in the banned box could be categorized like this...Come on.
Do you only know that many websites don't have any banning system? Did you know that there weren't any banning system until a year after the site was created? Do you know that the banning system often bugged and lost the banned members list regularly, until I corrected this only one year ago?
Then why do you feel so afraid now, while you weren't before when the situation was worse?
