What if the bear that attacks Balto in the first movie, was Aniu? I have a few reasons as to why this theory may fit.
1 - It had yellow glowing eyes just like many of the other animals that Aniu takes the form of in Wolf Quest.
2 - Jenna may not have found she truly cared about Balto until the attack took place. If the bear had not attacked, Balto and Jenna may not have gotten together.
3 - Aniu needed Aleu, Balto and Jenna's offspring, to lead the pack in Wolf Quest. So maybe Aniu was thinking ahead, of the big picture.
If anyone else can shed some light on this, it would be appreciated.
I realize that when the animators made Balto, they did not plan on the sequels but, what does everyone think?
I apologize, if someone else already mentioned this as a theory. If they did let me know?

If memory serves, it actually had red eyes. I personally don't believe it was Aniu, but your theory makes sense, so I voted "I don't know".
EDIT: I just saw a screenie of it, and it turns out you're right, it DID have yellow eyes. But I'm sure I saw at least one scene where it had red eyes? Or is that just me being dumb?

I believe Togo.
The original Balto was certainly more realistic than the sequel.

I just now realized I hadn't seen Wolf Quest in a while and assumed the animals that Aniu took the form of had glowing yellow eyes. However, it was mostly Aleu's eyes that glowed yellow during her visions. The animals that Aniu took the form of had glowing red eyes for the most part. I also saw a screenshot that had the bear's pupils clearly shown. Therefore, I am retracting my theory until I can gather more evidence. It is most likely that the bear that attacked Balto was NOT Aniu, it would have been cool if it was though.

Good theory but definately not
Aniu would not have attacked her son.
Aniu is a wolf, not a bear.
Nava, not Aniu caled for Aleu, and he origonally thought it was Balto who was to lead the pack.
Jenna admired and loved Balto because he went to get the medicene-and succeded.

In the first movie the White Wolf did'nt even have a name, if it had been Aniu thinking ahead that would mean that Universal had already decided to do a sequel and they had'nt at that point.
The bear ttacked to add some drama to the journey and they needed to seperate Balto from Boris, Muk and Luk so he could get the medicine and lead the team back to Nome and the White Wolf was a symbol of Balto's wolf-side in the first movie, not his mother.
I do remember an article explaining some reasons the bear might've attacked, maybe try looking it up.

It's a good theory, but when Balto was made, I doubt that they planned that far ahead. For this to be true, they would've needed to have a sequel already in mind during the production of Balto.

They both had yellow eyes so she must be Aniu? Why I admire your thinking for so such a loose way to comprehend it but I think no in all fairness the writers would have just had that scene for dramatic effect. Yeah the bear could have been a reason why Jenna and Balto got together but if they truly were destined for each other then they probably would have ended up together. After all nearly everyone on this site keeps sayin 'love finds a way' so maybe if the bear didnt attack jenna would have still fallen in love with Balto along there journey.
Maybe it could do for a fanfic idea? Cause its not a bad one but I just disbelieve that thats what the writers intentions were when they hadn't even really fully comprehended what/who Aniu was...apart from the white wolf, which only came to have its origins spoke of in the 2nd movie. The bear had yellow eyes imo to just make it more feral and crazy looking

I agree with Squival. Jenna and Balto would've wound up together regardless of whether the bear had attacked. Jenna already had it in her head to not deny "running with Balto".

I really doubt they were thinking that far ahead XD. Aniu also wouldn't try and nearly kill Balto by suffocating him when it was unknown that Jenna was following their tracks. Besides, if Jenna wasn't following, she wouldn't like him already, no? Balto getting the medicine to be accepted by Nome sort of sped up the process XDD
