What is the definition of a fan image? What do the rules say of fan images? This is what it says.



That is EXACTLY what it says. But, is that really what a fan image is? Something simply 'modified'. I don't believe that is what it is. Why? Because when I want a fan image (icon, avvy, signature, ect) I am looking for something different. Something that pleases the eyes. Something that makes me say "Wow. Someone here actuall made this for us to use."

Who is going to use a screen shot that is crappily covered over? Who is going to use a desktop that isn't even the right size? Who is going to use any of these 'things'?

A fan image is something someone will use. Not something you want to do and then put up just to say "I have a crappily colour over screenshot that I call a fan image!!!11"...

You dont know what I mean? Sense I am nice enough not to ruin anyones good name, I did one myself. It looks so pretty, and it is such an AMAZING fan image!!!11... I HOPE SOME1 USES IT AS A DESKTOP!!11.....

I coloured it pretty tacky, although that is the best one I have seen yet. And that is SAD.

I dont find that to be a fan image. I don't find a lot of things to be a fan image, but I still post mine. I mean, at least if someone is going to colour over it, do it so it doesn't look so TACKY!!!

What is wrong with people? If you cant spend an hour (at the most) to download a program that makes an ACTUAL fan image, then dont BOTHER sending in that... what ever you want to call it!..

I am an okay person when it comes to making fan images. I take PRIDE in making ACTUAL fan images. And when people send in these... coloured over fan images that are CLEARLY coloured over and terribly done. No offence to the people who MAKE these things, but take a few moments and download PhotoFiltre. Its FREE, and not that HARD to use. And it makes nice fan images. If your parents wont let you, THEN JUST DO SOMETHING ELSE ON THE SITE. Just because you can do something on the site, doesn't mean its the end of the world.

I don't think that these 'fan images' should be aloud on the site. Because they just kill the Balto spirit, if you ask me. I am sorry if you people cant DRAW, but that doesn't give you the right to colour over a screenshot and send it to the fan image section. Write a nice DESCRIPTION of your character.

Well, yeah, it's true that they're not "real" fan images and they annoy me too, but they're still modified, and it says that modified screenshots are accepted. But I agree with you; fan images are much more than just a recolored screenshot. I make them as well, and I can say from experience that it takes a lot of effort and creative thinking to make an image that is worthwhile. However, some people don't have the time and/or creativity to make a descent image. We can't really do anything about it. They're still modified.

Yes, indeed. They are still modified. But shouldn't a fan image be something people would actually WANT to use? Who would actually use screenshots of peoples 'characters' that used to be a decent picture?

People who dont have the time nor creativity to do so, don't need fan images. They should find something they are actually decent at, and work on that.

Believe it or not, but people actually do use thsoe rendered screenshots for avatars and stuff XD They may not have the best taste and they may be ugly and I may want to just delete them all in one swoop, but people do use them. Just not as often as the pretty ones.

Do not this: "You are not allowed to use fan drawings from other artists, unless you ask permission from the artist first."
Kinda sounds like what I did with that picture of StangWolf's (I even had the Disclaimer).

BUT, I do agree with you here. I have seen altered pictures from atop the screen (where they randomly change and whatnot) in someone's gallery, and had to report them to a mod.

I really don't understand why people think they're so sly with taking more popular pictures from the movies and claiming them as their own. Shouldn't they know that they're going to get caught sooner or later?

As for me; yes, I HAVE traced before. NO, I haven't put it here. Why? StangWolf let me use that turotorial. Which honestly helped me and I rapidly improved.

But I must say, that I DO agree with you here.
Most of the problems though, are of members who are new and joined JUST to cause trouble or who only want people to think that they're OH-SO-GREAT-ARTISTS!!

It's pointless, because people like that WILL get caught. >3

True Well, if you could make a rule that everyone will understand to explain this, I could add it. But it's not that easy. Saying "A fan image is something someone will use" is not enough.
Besides, who said they should be USED? Because you can just send things you want people to SEE, because you find them interesting. Things that wouldn't be accepted in the fanarts galleries.

And what's the definition of "an image which please the eye"? Now you see the problem when you make rules...

"an image which please the eye" pretty much means that it looks good.

Like.. What looks better? A Colored over screenshot? Or an avatar or signature someone worked hard on?

The colored screenshot would be an example of something that is not 'pleasing to the eye' while the signature is an example of something that is 'pleaseing to the eye'.

And yes Maya, I agree with you 100%! It drives me crazy when I see something like that. >_>

Unfortunately "pleasing to the eye" is where artistic experience comes into play And not that many people with Fan Images accounts have the "artistic ability" to make icons pretty (it's sad but its true) and some of us ALSO don't have good rendering programs on our computer XD Gotta make it fair for everyone (its difficult, I know XD)

You know, there is this FREE program that MANY of us use called 'PhotoFiltre'. I have PhotoShop Elements, but I dont use it to make my fan images with. I use all PhotoFiltre. And it works great. Its free, and easy to install.
