I would say if you didn't kill anyone at all, ever, it makes no sense. Especially in fanfics.. Like when they are in a impossible spot, and some how they dont die. That really ticks me off. I mean, I know people don't enjoy killing char's, but its part of life.
Like in my next fanfic, A Wolf's Tail: Part Two: Shadows in the Sun, is going to have a major char' die. You just don't know who. XD! <3
And in part one of AWT, I killed a char, or two. XP Unno if Jacque dies. =O
Anyways. So yeah, I like to have REALISM. I don't care if the char' is a fav of mine or not. I really find it upsetting when they do die, but I still love the the author or director or such has put the realism of actaul life into it.
Thats just what I think.

Call me crazy, but I love it when an author kills off a character. Even if it isn't a big character. It just adds so much for a story.

Oh jeeze. That ticks me off, too. >.> But oh well. XD

Sometimes it works well and sometimes it doesn't, depending on the circumstances. If a well liked character dies in a way that the majority would see as funny, then that is definitely a turnoff, because it can be very hard to concentrate on the emotional part, especially when everyone is saying stuff like,
"Hey do you remember when *bleep* got *bleep* by *bleep* by means of *bleep* with a *bleep*? That was hilarious!"

Yes. They give a big impact on the story above all. I often hate movies where a character is in a life-threatening situation and survives through the work of a miracle. Or, for example, in War of the Worlds when the son came back alive at the end I thought this was really predictable...

It depends on what kind of happy you're talking about. If it's the cheesy kind of happy like in fairy tales, particularly the Disney rehash versions of them, then I'm definitely with you. That's why I got into anime. And of course, the main character doesn't have to die for the ending to be sad. Maybe they sacrifice something and regret it, maybe they're seperated from who they're closest to, etc. Killing off the main character(or all of them) sometimes strikes me like the writers were thinking,
"Okay, can't think of an emotional, dramatic, and satisfying ending, so let's just hide our lack of planning behind a bloodbath and a whole ton of emo sadness for every single character we haven't killed yet."

If one of the main characters suddenly dies, it ads some suspense.
I mean, if he could die all of a sudden, anyone could...
If anyone can die, the story gets a new dimension (if you know the main character lives, the only question is what he lives through, not if he lives through).
This of course implies you need some characters to fill the gaps, 'cause you allways need a main character or two to advance the plot.
You can, of course, always go Shakespeare (everyone dies in the end).

It depends. Yes, it makes a big impact on the story, as long as it's an appropriate one. I mean, Mufasa's death in the Lion King was okay, whilst Dumbledore's death in Harry Potter 6 was completely unneccessary. (Sorry if I spoiled HP6 for some...)
