Firstly: NO FLAMING.

I know this is a very sensitive topic but please note it's about animal testing for COSMETICS only NOT medical research. Don't bring that in because people have incredibly strong views about it, from what I've learnt in the past that is.

What are your views on animal testing on cosmetics?

Personally, I'm becoming more aware of it now and I hate it. I was particulary shocked when a friend I have at school (who is a strict vegetarian and animal rights activist) told me a few of the companies that use animal testing for their cosmetics. When he told me that 'Herbal Essences' was one I was apalled. I've been using this shampoo for years and never knew. Obviously, I've stopped now but it's so difficult to get hold of shampoos and conditioners that officially haven't been tested on animals. The ones that haven't are also very expensive. The Body Shop is the easiest location but we haven't got one that close to us so I've had to settle on Accantia 'Simple' shampoo and conditioners. I was reading on the internet that someone wrote to them and they gave a good explanation in reply. So.. yeah, I'll just stick with that for now. My hair and scalp can be very sensitive but it's for sensitive skin and seems quite organic so I think it should be ok.

Unfortunately, I still use a lot of animal-tested things... but it's difficult to keep on top of... plus, my dad couldn't care less about animal-testing and keeps buying products that are on the list of companies that commit animal tests. :x

Also, watch out for animal-tested pet foods that put dogs and cats through a lot of suffering;

I don't think they should test Cosmetics on animals. i think that's cruel, but that's my opinion.

Almost all commercial pet foods test on animals, some nicer to them then others -- but that's not the point.

I heard that they only test shampoos and stuff on rats, though it is still harsh, it's better then feeding them to snakes IMO.

Though animal testing is unnecessary all together, I don't have a problem with it as long as they take good care of the animals in return.

I think testing cosmetics on animals is bull yang. Hey, if Paris Hilton wants hair spray she can test it herself! I mean God dang it how selfish can the human race get? I saw a rabbit on TV that was rescued from testing. They were testing eyeliner! The poor thing was blind when they saved him! This may seem crazy but, I have to say we, humns, suck. We are the worst thing that has ever happened to this planet. Of course not all of us are bad, like Steve Irwin. He was a guardian angel sent to all animals.

For testing on dog food, I think that's not the brightest idea at all. We are killing dogs to feed other dogs, not logical. I am NEVER buying Iams again. I'm going to tell my friends not to.

I was appalled too when I read about the dog food. I've been feeding Archie 'Purina' thinking they were promoting a 'loving' and 'caring' enviroment for dogs when behind the scenes they are making animals suffer! I've written a letter of complaint via their website. I'm thinking of switching Archie to Burns. It's a lot more expensive but it's all organic and not tested on animals. Plus, I can send off for a free sample through my magazine.

The cosmetics things just isn't fair. As Emily said, if someone wants to use the stuff, they can test it themselves!!

People don't stop to think that we're animals too  We have no fur though they think because they don't understand other animal language they can test on them because they don't have to hear them complain. But I do and its very painful.

Oh boy, here goes. Now I'm going to get angry comments.

I'd rather test it on animals than on humans. As to the dog food, who's going to be the ones eating it? Not me. Some animals, as bad as it is, have to be sacrificed so that others can live a better life. It's pure Machiavellianism put into practice. You have to work out what the greatest good is, and if some animals have to be sacrificed to that process, then that's just the way that it is.

I don't know why anyone is so shocked or apalled. I can tell you exactly why the government isn't doing anything to stop them, Jose. They don't care. Governments make these types of decisions all the time. Anytime your country has gone to war, be it a legitimate type of war or not, forced conscription or not, those people who went were sacrificed that others might live. It's the way of the world. No, it isn't nice and maybe it's not the most ethical thing in the world, but it is a fact of life and testing my Old Spice Body Wash on Stuart Little isn't going to keep me up nights.

I commend you all for standing up for things that you believe in; that's difficult to do. But remember, the majority of folks on the street don't care. That's why they keep buying the things they do. And I have to say, there is one thing that no amount of activism can ever defeat and that thing is pure apathy. If no one cares, it doesn't really happen.

I've always hated this. I don't see why people think it's okay to do this kind of thing to animals. If someone wants to see if hair spray or make-up is good, then they can try it for themselves!

I totaly agree with you! Most people don't give a rat's back-end about animals or anything else. Those kind of people make me sick. >.>

A rat is still an animal. NO animal EVER deservs that. It's like if American colonists said "Let's test things on the Native Americans because they are lesser beings than us and differnt." An animal is an animal. Just because rats are smaller and 'less of an animal' to some, it doesn't mean they would deserve that. >.>

I'm native and I find that insulting..

They have reasons why they test on animals instead of humans, it's cheaper, the animals can't sue them if they go bald & so on.

We are NOT animals, we're humans, and how do we suck? If it were't for us there would be billions of starving animals with no homes and broken bones & again so on..

Did I ever say that people actually said that? NO. I was using it as an EXAMPLE.

And people ARE animals. If it weren't for people, other animals, ones who have more of a right to be here, would be even more safe than with us here. People have already caused the extinction of countless INNOCENT animals. Next time maybe look stuff up before trying to fasley state information.
