i did not know where to put this topic well anyway i collect a magazine called the dog collection and issue 26 is the siberian husky and in it it had an article called 'mercy dash' and it was about BALTO i was so happy here is what it said 'In January 1925 a diphtheria epidemic broke out in the remote town of Nome in Alaska. All the vaccine had been used, and fresh supplies from Anchorage could only be brought by train as far as Nenana, more than 1000 km away across a frozen land beset by blizzards and 90kmh winds. No planes were availble so the task of transporting the 9kg package of medicine was under taken by 20 mushers and 100 huskies.
In tempertures of more than 50 degrees below zero the dogs travelled the distances in an amazing 5 and a half days-2 froze to death in harness and their place hauling the sled was taken by their musher. The final leg of the relay was run by Gunnar Kasaan;his lead dog, Balto saved the team by scenting out the correct route when Kasaan lost his way and took them within meters of precipice. the team finally made it to Nome on the 2nd of february and in 5 days the epidemic had stopped'. he is most famous sled dog of all!!!
i just wanted to tell every-one who does not collect this magizne about baltos article:);)
holy that kind of reminds me when i was reading my book called dogs on duty and they were true story's and one was about balto!boy did i ever freak out!
