I've seen this question asked a lot so I have finally gotten around to making a tutorial for it. It's pretty easy, too.
The program I use when making a transparent background is PhotoFiltre which can be downloaded for
free HERE
Now onto the tutorial.
STEP ONE:
Open the file you want. If you wish to make changes in the size of your picture, do it now.
STEP TWO:
Select the "magic wand" tool from the tool bar:
and select the background, making sure that there is a dotted line surrounding it. *NOTE* Be careful that you don't accidently select part of the picture you want let. If that happens, you must use the paintbrush to 'erase' the background around those areas.*
STEP THREE
Right click the area you have selected with the magic wand tool. When the selection box comes up, you then select "Cut". *NOTE* Be sure you don't accidently selece "Crop"*
Continue this process until your background is gone and you only have the picture you want left.
STEP FOUR
Next select the "Transparent Color" button at the top. This is between "Indexed Color" and "Image Size". When you select Transparent Color, a box will pop up. Select "YES".
STEP FIVE
Now another box will come up asking for the color you want to become transparent. For this to work you must be aware of two things:
1) The color you choose must be whatever color your background you want to make transparent is.
2) Make sure whatever color you choose to become transparent is no where in your picture. It it is, than that part of the picture will also become transparent.
If you do everything right, your picture should now have the image you wanted with gray and white boxes where your background was.
STEP SIX
All you have to do know is to save you picture. When you select save from the File menu, a box will come up saying that you must change the file to a .GIF in order to make it transparent. Select "YES".
And you're done!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
