Ok, I know this topic has been discussed in the past, many times I've been told, but not while I'm here or noticed. I've been a rescue volunteer for nearly 4 years with a Siberian Husky rescue and have had the pleasure of conversing with highly respected, reputable, and knowledgable Malamute rescuers, and breeders, many of which have been researching and/or breeding Malamutes for beyond 30 years. Many able to track traits back to nearly their origins. It has been claimed to me to that Alaskan Malamutes, or all northern breed dogs for that matter, may have Blue Eyes. I would trully like to hear were this fact has been deduced from, research wise, etc. As I stated earlier I've been in contact with rescuers, and breeders with a knowledge of the breed that blows what any book or even any kennel club can put together. These rescuers, breeders and scholars, I would go as far to say, ensure me that Purebred Malamutes can not have blue eyes. Though it has been introduced into the breed through mixed breeding.. whether Siberian Husky or what have you with blue eyes. I am in the process of attaing further information from these sources to share but in the meantime would like to hear the sources previously brought the table. Mind you the AKC gives a reference for showing a dog in conformaiton matches. The AKC gives standards to base a breed not the true form of the breed necessarily.

I am not a dog expert, nor do I know anything about Malamutes, but if people can be born with 3 legs and what not, why can't a dog be born with blue eyes? It's probably rare, but not impossible.

Someting like 3 legs is a mutation. Something that is a mutation doesn't necessarily stand as part of the breed. Like I stated early I'm still putting info together but from what I've gathered so far it seems that somewhere along the line of puppy mills, and pet stores with their negelectful breeding, the line between a Siberian Husky and a Malamute became obscure to the point that it became a sale tactic to sell Malamute/Siberian Husky mixes as Rare "Malamutes." Eventually along the line of the AKC standard building the statement of blue eyes being a Disqualification as part of the breed was added to imply a mixed breed as having blue eyes. I don't want to get my info mixed up until I get more experienced answers so in all respect of keeping this thread clean and free from arguments lets state our opinion only while not disagreeing or agreeing with another member. Please post though if you have a good knowledgable answer. I meant to add this to my first post but you posted before I could edit it Chasity, so I just added it as a new post. Not harping on you or anything.

Well I have tried doing research on them before, I went on a dog site and somebody claimed they had an Alaskan Malamute with blue eyes, I heard that they could only be brown so I looked it up..I got some confusing info..

Wikipedia wrote:
Eyes are almond-shaped and brown; blue eyes are sometimes found, but will disqualify the dog in shows.

AKC.org, alaskanmalamutes.org, ankc.aust.com wrote:
Blue eyes are rare and a disqualifying fault.

But..

iamra.org wrote:
Alaskan Malamutes ALWAYS have brown eyes! If you are inquiring about a blue eyed dog - that would be a Siberian Husky!

Though I'm going to trust you with this one, seing as you have had expeirence working with them and all.

Information in this post isn't thoroughly checked through my sources yet so forgive me if I state something wrong but I will correct it later if it is incorrect.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Correct public breed information has slowly been lost over the years making it's way into the mainstream media such as the ever popular.. wikipedia.. The fact is yes blue eyes are now found in dogs of claiming to be Malamutes but the the truth is they are part of an ever growing poor breeding/crosss breeding line.

I view the AKC's definition of "Fault" as a trait not part of the breed. Therefore making "Malamutes" with blue eyes.. a mixed breed or possibly a Siberian Husky of poor breeding lineage. But like I said earlier.. the AKC is setting a standard for conformation matches not necesarilly the true breed characteristics.

If you go to a well educated Malamute Rescue, like the one you listed in your last post Chasity, then they will tell you the same I am.. that a blue eyed "malamute" is indeed a Siberian Husky or Mix of one form or another.

I'll do more research over time, but for now..that's all that comes up.

I think those people sound kind of..immature. XD

IMO, huskies and malamutes look better with brown eyes, anyways. I don't get why people make such a big deal out of it. lol

I'm really interested in seeing research. I want this thread to be a good educated discussion on the topic. Actually bringing in professionals and putting this debate, that's been going on here for a while, to rest. I just don't see any proof from anybody here so far that this is trully natural for the "true" breed.

Alaskan malamutes CAN have blue eyes. Infact, I seen many. I used to not think they could, but now I KNOW. Blue eyes are a disqualifying fault, but they CAN have blue eyes. It's pretty rare, but not VERY rare. It's a fault, and I read that on MANY dog expert sites that know much more than you. They said it's a fault, not that the malamutes can't have blue eyes. :?

What I fould was that Alaskan Malimutes can have bleu eyes.

Quote:
Brown is the most common color for dogs’ eyes. Most purebred Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies have blue eyes, even as adults.

I tried to go to other sites, but all of them I went to kept giving me weird messages. >_>

if you guys are going to just keep putting me down I'm not even going to argue. I want full fledged research backed facts guys. I couldn't give a crap about you being an "expert" for the akc... dog history goes futher back then the akc can ever dream up. I'm talking about the original breed before it got brought over from it's original land and screwed up in the US and wherever else it spread to first. The AKC sets standards for todays dogs that yes there is a very very real possibility that the lines have been tweaked to everybody's liking before the standard even came in place. Take Siberian Huskies for example. There are many "PURE" breed huskies that are much much closer to the original inuit lines and they would fail in an AKC conformation match, hands down. What I've said from my original post is that the vast majority of people today are ignorant to the true breed traits that some are trying to upkeep. If you all aren't even going to listen to the fact that, "hey this may be true" then why even bother with you

Hello!! Just because you "own" them or "breed" them doesn't make you an expert. I have been doing research on dogs for the past 3 years and there's still quite a bit of stuff that I don't know.

I really don't believe that you own any either...

It doesn't matter if you were talking to me or not, if your going to publish your opinion in a public place then your talking to everybody and giving everybody a free right to reply.

I'll believe when I see pics, and don't put any off of google. I can tell the difference.

I wasn't really calling YOU a liar, but there has been alot of people who post pictures of horses and such from google. So now, I wont believe anybody until they show a REAL picture. Yes, I know, getting pictures from google is childish.

I guess I'm sorry too and I can't wait to see the pics!
