I was writing an essay the other day, about freedom and education. I came to the conclusion that one cannot posses true freedom without an education. However I found that in large part the actual definition of freedom is largely dependent upon the environment in which it appears, for instance freedom where basic human rights is concerned is different from freedom in education. The definition of freedom seems to be always changing from one moment to the next.

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition defines freedom as:

NOUN: 1. The condition of being free of restraints. 2. Liberty of the person from slavery, detention, or oppression. 3a. Political independence. b. Exemption from the arbitrary exercise of authority in the performance of a specific action; civil liberty: freedom of assembly. 4. Exemption from an unpleasant or onerous condition: freedom from want. 5. The capacity to exercise choice; free will: We have the freedom to do as we please all afternoon. 6. Ease or facility of movement: loose sports clothing, giving the wearer freedom. 7. Frankness or boldness; lack of modesty or reserve: the new freedom in movies and novels. 8a. The right to unrestricted use; full access: was given the freedom of their research facilities. b. The right of enjoying all of the privileges of membership or citizenship: the freedom of the city. 9. A right or the power to engage in certain actions without control or interference: “the seductive freedoms and excesses of the picaresque form” (John W. Aldridge, The Atlantic Monthly August 1994).

I was wondering, What do YOU think freedom, is not only in your life, but in general?

That you can do anything you like, as long as you don't walk over the freedom of others. It's only a matter of being able to do what we want, as long as we don't disturb anyone.

Freedom is for me if every creature is free, has rights and everyone accept the rights of all creatures.

To me, freedom is the right to express yourself freely without disturbance.

Just the right to do anything you please without being critisized or shunned for it.
There are different kinds of freedoms that each person should have, each stated in the Constitution.

Freedom of speech - The freedom to say whatever you want, no matter what it is, and not be put down to ignored. Your voice has the right to be heard and your opinions considered.

Freedom of the press - The freedom to say anything you like in books, newspapers or articles that you write yourself, even if they are biased or one-sided.

Habeas Corpus - The freedom of having your reasons for being tried said to you at the time of the arrest, otherwise, your case may be dismissed.

^^ This is true for the United States, and in general I think when Americans refer to freedom most often this is what they are referring to. That obviously won't be the case for the citizens of other countries.

I don't believe that there really is such a thing as freedom. It doesn't matter who, where, or what you are, you are always limited by something. It may seem like only one little tiny thing that you can't do, but it's not truly freedom.

Yeah, I know that.
I was just saying what it meant to me in particular, since I'm an American.

The base idea of freedom is being able to do whatever you want, without being restrained in any shape, form, or way.

Personaly, I see freedom as a double edged sword. There are some freedoms that are all good, like the freedom you have if your not a slave, that is a very good freedom, and one I can not see as bad in anyway, but a lot of freedoms have a dark side. Take freedom of speech for example, yes, you can state your opinions and speak freely without fear of punishmet, but at the same time people can say untrue things, or go ranting and swearing if they choose to. Typicaly most places would deal with a person who would be doing such things, but you get the point. Freedom is good and bad, just like most things in this world. Sadly I think that a lot of people don't realize the good freedoms that they have (typicaly people here in the US)

^^But there is point in it. You are limited by laws or some standarts of public behavior. Truly freedom is almost anarchy, but freedom you talk about is limited in way you don`t realize too much...

Actually since freedom is such a broad term one has to define it in some way shape or form if they are going to talk specifics. (As I did with that education essay.) If we were to take freedom as a whole without any kind of restriction or narrowing of the definition in relation to the situation or environment at hand then I would have to agree with you to an extent. If anarchy were the norm there would be nothing to stop one person from infringing on the freedoms of another though.

@JazzyWolf, that’s a very interesting analogy, its almost like real true freedom isn’t possible without walking over the freedom of another which might lead one to believe that true freedom for everyone is impossible.

Is there freedom? seriously is there? because of you have a boss of somesort or well... is that being free? with diffrent laws and government freedom is defenetly not on earth, for freedom, you should be able to do what you want when ever you want, with no higher up kicking your a** back down for it, seriously, freedom is without government, without dumb retarded presidents, without anyone being the boss of you, but will that ever happen??
