Hello!
In this topic I want to
-show our city-trains (Berlin)
-explain the importanst things of the vehicles
-ask you for photos of your city-trains and/or Tubes
-ask you for telling something about your trains and
-ask you for your opinion for the index of my informations and for the design of the trains
Let's start.
Berlin has:
-a city train, called S-Bahn (Stadtbahn)
-an U-Bahn (= tube or subway)
-a Tram (German: Straßenbahn (Street-train))
-lots of Busses (Bus, Plural: Busse)
I think not so many cities in the world has a city train. The most cities have Subways. But Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt/Main and some other German towns have both.
The S-Bahn of Berlin was the first one in Germany. The first electric S-Bahn trains drove first at 24th August 1924.
After the two Worldwars the whole net was down but it was very fast rebuild. Many trains were destroyed or demaged and the most trains which weren't bust impounded.
When Berlin was perted in East and West also the net was parted and the S-Bahn couldn't drive in the West sectors. Only at Friedrichsstraße some pepole were allowed to change in S-Bahn trains which drove to West. This were pensioners or pepole who worked in the West, like my grandfather.
He worked for the S-Bahn.
After German reunification the net was one again. But also today you can see some never or late rebuild lines. Only since May last year Berlin has its S-Bahn-circle back. The circle is a circle again and you can drive there without leaving the train.
But don't wonder if you weak up in the washer.
The S-Bahn is, like all S-Bahnen (plural) in Germany, ownership by DB (Deutsche Bahn).
Today Berlin has 15 S-Bahn lines with 331 kilometres, 165 stations and 335 million passengeers over the year.
The old vehicles before the wars are sorted out.

The drove over 80 years in Berlin. I met them until 1997 and 2003.
Here you can see one of the oldest electric S-Bahn trains of Berlin, type series 475. Sorted out in 1997.
Also very old, type series 477. Sorted out 2003. I miss them.
This is the oldest type series, the 485. The last one fo the East. Erich Honecker, the last chief of the GDR wanted to lacquer them all red, but today the most of the 485 were also lacquered in red-yellow with the black stripe in the middle of red and yellow. Red and yellow is the tradition-colour for Berlins S-Bahn.
Also still ,,alive''--> the 480. Build at the same time like 485 (end of the 80s) but in the West.
The newest S-Bahn, it drives since 1995. The 481/482.
Now the U-Bahn, the Subway. Like New york has Berlin two seizes of rails. The small profile (2,30 m) and the big profile (2,65 m). In the most other German cities the Trams are also the Subways, but not in the bigest cities, Berlin, Munich and Hamburg. Berlins U-Bahn was one of the first in the world. The first line was opened in 1902-> 15th February 1902.
170 stations, 144,9 km routes, 906,9 million people every year use the U-Bahn.
The BVG administer the U-Bahn, the Trams and the Busses and some ships at the Spree in Berlin. (Berliner Verkehrsgesellschaft).
Here you can see one of the oldest U-Bahn trains, the Schöneberger U-Bahn, made of
wood (!)
This is only the last one, the top of the last one of the Schöneberger U-Bahn trains, standing in an undergroundstation.
Also an U-Bahn train of small profile, the A3l92.
The A3 drives since the 60s.
Now I let some trains out because we've so many different U-Bahn trains. xP
The newest of the small profile U-Bahn trains. So new, that the BVG has only 2 trains of this type series, every with 8 waggons.
It was a really hard tour to get a photo of this train. Because this type of series is so rare in Berlin, only
two trains.

Numbers: 1001-1002 and 1003-1004.
Type series: HK
Now big profile.
We had the type series B, C, the E (E was an S-Bahn adapetd into an U-Bahn^^) <-- but this type of series I've never seen because the were sorted out when I wasn't born or when I was to little.

And D.
The trains now of big profile are p.es.:
Here the oldest one, the type series F. Also driving since the 60s.
A new F (the first one was F74, this is F76):
Some of the type series you can only differ at the waggon numbers. 2500 would be an F 74, 2600 an F76 ... 3000 is an F90.
The newest of the big profile, build since 1994. The H (and HK is the same but in small profile, K means klein, and klein is small.)
The last words now for the Trams and Busses. We've got only 5 different types fo series of Tram but this are only two different in the design.
The old Tatras. Maybe some members here who are of Poland know them, because the BVG sale the old Tatras to Poland.
And the new one type of series, the Niederflurbahnen (Niederflur=down floor), GTN6 and GTNZ6, build 1999-2003.
GTNZ6 (with dark windows).
GTN6 with normal windows and without air condition.
And some photos of Busses. we've soooo many different Busses.
Our oldest Busses which are still driving.
Don't ask me for the type of series to the Busses.....we've so many different Busses. xP If you really want to know them, I ask a friend of me, he knows them all.
OK and now please tell me your opinion abuout the content informations, maybe, if you were in Berlin yet, about your experiences with the Busses and trains and please tell something about your city-trains and Busses. And it would be very nice of you, if you had own photos. But please own photos. I want to show photos of trains and Busses of other countries and I need the OK for the showing in my forum and so they can only be of you or a private friend.

Maybe here're some people of Greatbritain who have pictures of the red Busses?
Would be very nice!!!
We've still own photos of other German trains and Busses, of CZ, of NL, Ireland and Singapure.
If you also have photos of German trains and Busses of you, you should show it here^.^
Oh and: If you've any questions, post it. I try to answer.
And if you want to see more pics or pics of the missing type of series (U-Bahn, very old S-Bahnen, Busses), so tell that you want to see more.
Greetings, Fieto
PS: To the photos: The most photos are shot by myself, the others of Locutus Deer-a friend. Only one photo of an old S-Bahn is of the free S-Bahn-Hompage.
