Post subject: Frames on the site
PostPosted: Mon Jan 01, 2007 3:44 pm

I just thought of something. My internet goes really slow and I was expirementing with frames a while ago. I found that pages load faster with frames (thats the whole purpose, isnt it?)

If there was a menu frame, banner frame for the banner on the top of the page, and a main frame, the main frame would be reloaded when a link was clicked but not the menu frame or banner frame and that would save a lot of time, except for external links like to the petition page...huh......That might be tricky...?

I realize this could be a lot of hassle, but I think it could help with speed.

(P.S. The only reason I act so knowlegdable is because I know a little HTML :) )

You should get a faster internet provider. :D

I can't get a faster internet provider because they don't have DSL in our area like Verizon promised... And our crappy mobile home isn't prewired for cable... Also, Netzero works the best but it isn't here either... We have to move into our new house to get cable.

I dont agree, though framesets may be old, it's not completely useless, in some cases. But I now realize it may be a lot of hassle for a site that's already going pretty fast.

Yes, the HTML for Balto Source isn't that bad... I don't want to talk about scripts other than HTML because I have no idea how the heck you use PHP so therefore I wouldn't be right to judge the scripts on the site.

Technically, using framesets doesn't make div and CSS unapplicable (from what I understand). So, in fact, you could use CSS and div with framesets can't you?

All sites are made with CSS, otherwise they should be, because HTML, raw, without CSS, makes for boring layouts.

Claymore, It's either you or me who doesn't understand framesets. Like I said, using framesets doesn't make CSS unapplicable. Also, the PHP is only needed for things like guestbooks, comments, forums, and I think for thumbnails of fanart, also for fanfiction. I'm not sure, because I'm not a complete expert on HTML and CSS, and I haven't used PHP ever before.

I must say, I'm amazed that the comments don't take a long time to post. I would expect, this being the biggest Balto-related site on the web (that I know of, and my knowlegde is limited, so no rude replies for that please), I thought that it might lag a small bit because of all the imformation on the databases... Perhaps I underestimated the power of a MySQL database and PHP...? Or maybe Steet has alot of server space... Either way, the site is running pretty fast, so I withdraw my suggestion.

After all, I'm not an expert, and it is only a suggestion. Thanks for the replies!

Umm..The mods can do their thing and lock this if they feel like it because frames are pointless and..whatever...

Thanks!

Sorry for the long-winded post, I like to act as if I'm intelligent and use big words.

Sorry, but as I said I'm not an expert and this was just a suggestion.

I said I withdrew my suggestion, so those replies were unneeded, thank you. Togo, I thought I already stated that I realized that frames are useless now.

And I never complained of it going slow, so I don't know why you said it only goes slow because of my internet... :?

And feel free to lock this, any passing mods :P

Pages made with them look worse than CSS and "div" sites. I saw the script of Balto Source, and it's really well done, perfect for slow connections.

Well thanks, but it could be much better yet. You know, the first version of the site didn't use any CSS or DIV (I didn't even know what it was at the time...) I've moved the site progressively to use them, so it's not as clean as it could be if I would redo the code entirely. Never used frames though, I've always heard bad things about them.

But I agree that frames aren't useless. For example, PhPmyadmin uses it because it allows to separate the content into different windows, which make things more practical. Although, they should disappear because now it's possible to use Ajax programming, which has the same advantage of not having to reload everything, and it's even more precise. (I used it for one little thing on the site, but plan on using it more in the future)

Balto Souce's server is a good one, and if the server goes slow it's becase you have a slow connection of the ping is too high.

Errr...Recently, there have been problems with the datacenter, or the server. So if you have experienced downtimes, this wasn't your internet connection but the server.
