With the War on Terrorism going on, we frequently think about those poor soldiers, but in World War 1, World War 2 and the Vietnam War, there weren't just people fighting, but dogs too! Wardogs were trained to be loyal to only a few people, to carry messages where there were no telephone lines, to detect mines and enemy soldiers, and defend their masters. Who knows who'd rule us if it hadn't been for those wardogs?
I am amazed at what those wardogs did, and I would like to learn more about them. Does anybody know anything else about wardogs or knows of a good book about those brave and loyal dogs?

I watched something about wardogs on 'Animal Miracles'. There were two stories, one concerning a search patrol with a dog who sensed a land mine on land that had already been checked, the other was a German Shepherd who alerted the soldiers that had fallen asleep who were under attack. They managed to prepare themselves and warn the invaders off.

Dogs amaze me.. their loyalty to humans is magnifecent. We should appreciate them more.

I saw that episode of Animal Miracles too! I also read a book called Dog to the Rescue!. That book had seventeen true stories about dogs who rescued something. Three of the stories were about wardogs and the rest were stories about pet-dogs.

Yes, I was aware of that. And I highly disagree with the usuage of animals in war, it's our battle to fight not theirs. There for, they should be honored as much as the soldiers for their efforts that aren't even going to repay them. Anyway, I salut the soldiers out there, animal and human alike. :salut:

The USA wardogs of World War 2 were going to be euthanized because they were considered too dangerous to return to the USA. But the military commanders were convinced to just have the dogs detrained and either adopted out or returned to their former families. That's a relief for those wardogs, huh?

I remember reading that in a lot of Battles more dogs were killed then people. Sad, but at least now we have some things that can replace them and be more safe.

Well, before we start feeling too badly about the dogs that got killed, we ought to recall that there have been memorials around the country for the dogs long before there was a WWII memorial in Washington DC. Your government hard at work. However, that is not to take anything away from the hard work those dogs did. They served their country bravely and many died for their country. We salute you, dogs of war! Semper Fi!

Why are people always so ready to flame?

There have always been arguments about whether it's fair on the dogs. The breeds they use such as the German Shepherd, Dobermann, Husky or whatever like to work. They were bred to work. Why deprive them of it?

There are two sides of the argument, I understand that. I think I prefer dogs being used as Search and Rescue, Police and Guide dogs but yeah, I can see the side of them being used in War situations as well.

Uh... you know, in normal work is no danger (or that danger is very low) that you would be shot without warning or something like that, unlike in the war.
I think they weren`t bred for being killed...

:?

The dogs would be just as protected as the people in situations like that. It is just as likely for a Police Dog to be shot.
