On January 20, 1925, a radio signal went out, flashing for miles across the frozen tundra:

Nome calling... Nome calling... We have
an outbreak of diphtheria... No
Serum... Urgently need help... Nome
calling... Nome calling...
Nome's only doctor had diagnosed cases of diphtheria, an extremely contageous disease affecting the throat and lungs, which can easily reach epidemic proportions. The Inuit Indians were particularly vulnerable. Whole villiages had been wiped out by earlier epidemics of measles and flu. The frantic search for antitoxin began:

Seattle calling... Seattle calling... Fresh
serum available here... Airplanes standing
by to fly to Nome...
January 25
The long twilight of the arctic winter had settled over Nome. Heavy snow had fallen and temperatures dropped far below zero. These weather conditions were beyond the technical capabilities of early airplanes with open cockpits.

Anchorage calling... Anchorage calling...
300,000 units of serum located
in railway hospital here... Package can be
shipped by train to Nenana... Package
weighs 20 pounds... Could serum be
carried to Nome on Iditerod Trail by
mail drivers and dog teams?

I got all this from Wikipedia! I thought it was really cool! It's what was said when Nome was "infected" with Diphtheria. Enjoy!^^

Seattle is the closest port city in the "Lower 48" states to Anchorage. Vancouver is slightly closer to Anchorage, but it is a Canadian city. Also, there were no roads through Canada that connected the "Lower 48" to Alaska at the time of the Serum Run (those roads would be built in 1940s).

Well, the serum that was relayed by dog-sled was the 300,000 units from Anchorage. That serum held off the diphtheria epidemic until the shipment from Seattle could arrive in late Febuary and finish off the disease in Nome. So they were separate shipments.
That is a very interesting find! :D But after what people have told me, I find it a bit hard to trust Wikipedia. It might be true, though. Hmm....
