i dont know about you all.. but really todays music is somewhat depressing and pointless (almost all in general but there are good exceptions.) i wonder where all the good stuff has gone...

does someone remembers the carpenters? Karen carpenter had such a voice.. that special "something" that you would always know thats her singing. here is a sample of those great artists from the past..

and this same song but now sang by the kings.. the Beatles!

such tunes are far beyond than the ones played this days..

whats your opinion?

It's not really bad music, it's just different. Part of what causes this muisc to seem "depressing" it cause a lot of music written today is far more dissonant than consonant. Dissonance is a very important part of music, you can't have all consonace. Of course your can'thave all dissonance either. I will admit, many bands today have a focus of lyrics that aren't exactly uplifting and they're music seems to lean on the dissonant side of things. I say it's a phase. For example, with Evanesence, they're good, but they're still a fairly new band, and if you compare their first album to their second album, there is more consonance used and the lyrics are becoming less depressing, for a lack of better words. Hopefuly they'll grow to use both consonace and dissonance and have songs both depressing, with a sader theme and some with a more uplifting theme. That and they could use some stuff with a lighter theme, all they're stuff has such a deep theme, it's good and all, but there needs to be some contrast. Well, all good things do take time.

Personaly, I don't like dewling in the past. Don't get me wrong, I love older music. I grew up on Billy Joel, I listen to jazz from a lot of different time periodes. What i mean is getting stuck in the past when one thinks that older music is truely the best and most new music isn't good. That is often due to personal preferance, but it really is a bad perspective in my opinion. There has always been bad new music, in every time periode. There are a lot of great artists out there these days, you just have to look for them. I have this same kinda issue with my grandmother. She thinks only the big band era music was truely jazz. I have her listen to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, she tells me that ain't jazz, or at least not good jazz. She thinks Gleen Miller is good jazz, and he is, but he's not the only good jazz. Heck, Gleen Miller has nothing on Coltrane, Miles, or Bird, and he didn't do hardly anything for the world of jazz compared to those giants. My point is, getting suck in the past music wise in my opinion is kinda closed minded, cause if most people were like that all those many years ago, then we wouldn't have a lot of the music we have today.

I LOVE depressing songs  Like 'Unfaithful', ''Final Goodbye', and 'A Million Miles Away' by Rihana, 'Family Portrait' by Pink, 'Welcome to My Life' and 'Perfect' by Simple Plan...I could go on forever

I see absoloutely nothing wrong with depressing music  And 'pointless'??? They're not at all pointless - they're touching and emotional - which loads of people enjoy. I, myself, am a fan of depressing music.

Also, I can't stand the Beetles >.< XD  My opinion

I never voluntarily listen to depressing songs unless I want to be depressed, or I already am. There aren't too many of those, and it's especially difficult because I have a natural habit of listening to and comprehending all of the lyrics... like nobody else I know seems to do... but yeah, sometimes I like to listen to my Mom's Beatles CDs because those guys sing some pretty uplifting songs. I even listened to that new Beatles CD, "Love" which I gave to her for Christmas, and that's always something uplifting to listen to.

Personally, I prefer 80's hair metal over both grunge and oldies but that's just me.
