Well, to answer your question: here's my ideas on why Ralph and Kirby are so . . . largely big-boned compared to the rest of the team and the other dogs:
1) - Perhaps to add size diversity to the story and characters. Sure, not all huskies are going to be perfectly sized. It's the same with people. Heck, some people are thin and slender, some are large (either by over-eating or genetics - you can't help it if you're born a certain way! Didn't anyone learn that in WQ? Duh.), and others are in between.
2) - ArcticWolf's "Giant Malamutes" idea. Heck, if geese and polar bears can be accepted in a crowd that doesn't even notice the fact that they are polar bears and geese, then it's possible. Besides, it's an animated movie - not real, although it's based on real ideas.
3) - *Points to Sig and Avatar* I think that's only my opinion on it. ROFL. Probably not true, but meh. Note: This point is nothing more than a joke. Don't take it seriously, okay? Thanks.
Anywho, I believe that it's mainly for the diversity of characters. I mean, if you think about it, you have a female (which is a first) and two large-sized males in WoC's Trio, which seemed to continue on the typical "Trio Guidelines", but also made them be a large part of the main story.
I rest my case.

It's probably just bad animation/drawing. Although, their bodies do give them their character.

It doesn't matter if it's possible or not. It's an animated movie! All the background huskies in Balto 1 were much too big - but you don't see us complaining about it It was just to make them look more cute and cuddly.
It doesn't matter one bit if the dogs looks a little too 'overweight'. In an animated movie, reality is boring - when animators push boundaries, the films are alot more fun!
Hope my opinion has been helpful ;D

Yeah, the fact that Balto is an animated movie solves a lot of these debates.

Ralph has a bigger apetite than Kirby.

Well, like Rebel said, pretty much all of the background dogs in Balto 1 were chubby. It actually kinda bothered me; if having fat dogs was to add diversity to the characters, then why are there so many of them? There's one "poofy" husky (Jenna), one muscular (Steele) one "normal" (Kaltag) one small and scrawny (Star) and all the others were fat. That's why I liked the way Balto and Aleu looked, they had a more realistic look - plus I love their big paws xD
But I don't mind having one fat dog in a group of three, like with Nikki, Kaltag and Star. They all looked very different, and I'm very paranoid about characters looking different
