Everyone on Balto source knows Balto and most know about Togo but, do you recall the other sled dogs that helped save the town? Kolyma and Polaris. These huskies also aided the town when it needed help. I just wanted to raise awareness about them because not many people know they helped as well...

EDITED:

I have just found out that the information I recieved above from one of my teachers is false. I appoligize greatly for this. But, these dogs do have history. There is more than just information about Polaris and Kolyma but, it does have to do with Nome and huskies.

The All Alaskan Sweepstakes was first introduced in the year of 1908. The sled dogs would race from Nome to Candle then back to Nome. In 1909, William Goosak, a Russian fur trader, was excited to win some money in the All Alaskan Sweepstakes. That year he travelled to the Adyr river of Siberia and bought some Siberian huskies. William travelled across the Bearing Strait to Alaska hoping to win the race. Everyone mocked his dogs. They labeled them Siberian rats! His huskies were much much smaller than the Alaskan Malamutes that made up the other musher's teams. No one thought they would win let alone finish the race. The odds against William's team was 100 to 1. In the end, he left them in awe when he came in third! Everyone was amazed of the dogs' endurance compared to their size. Meanwhile, other sled dogs were also becoming famous. In 1909, Robert Peary and his lead dog Polaris were the first to make it to the North Pole.

In the year of 1910, John Ramsey went to Markovo Fair to buy 70 Siberian huskies. He had been truely inspired by William Goosak's sucessful team and entered his dogs in the All Alaskan Sweepstakes. His huskies won 1st, 2nd and 4th place! The magnificiant reputation of the Siberian huskie was made. The first placed team's musher was a man called Iron Man Johnson and his lead dog Kolyma. They travelled the distance in only 74 hours, 14 minutes and 37 seconds. Not a soul has ever been able to defeat this time.

Eh, I have never heard of these dogs. I will have to look this up. I renember dogs that were on Balto's team, but none had those names I don't think. But there were other teams so these dogs could have been on one of them. But I don't know, I will have to find out ;)

Can you provide your historical sources, Emily? Thanks!

Most of the dogs of the serum run teams have gone unnoticed. However, a historical notation about them would go far to helping us understand.

Yea, thanks for the sources ;) Lot's of people wouldn't do that, they wouldn't be bothered to see if it's true or not. But there is no reason posting something if you do not know if it is true and can't give resorces, thanks for that Emily!

(Regarding the 1910 All Alaska Sweepstakes race) Sushi Roll wrote: "The first placed team's musher was a man called Iron Man Johnson and his lead dog Kolyma."
----------------------------------------
There are a couple of photos of John (Iron Man) Johnson and Kolyma available for purchase at the Glenbow-Alberta Institute in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The co-leader of Johnson's famous 1910 All Alaska Sweepstakes team was known by three names during his 23 year life. This dog was a new born pup when he was rescued by two trappers.....right after his mother had been killed by a wolf. He became a well known sled dog in Alaska, and was on loan to Johnson to run in the 1910 AAS race.

After that, the dog's original owner took him to the Lower 48 where they toured the nation and retired in Oregon. For the complete story about the life of this dog, please refer to the book "Alaska Trail Dogs" (1945) by Elsie Noble Caldwell.
