Have fun! I would rather have a mix than a purbred. Besides sometimes mixes can be vey adorable!!!

It's just as possible to get a purebred dog from a breed rescue as it is a purebred OR mix from a shelter. The rescues are VERY strict (stricter than reputable breeders, even) about the person or family wanting to adopt, as they want their dogs' second chances to be the ONLY time they have to go to a new home (which is certainly understandable).

Still, while dachshunds can be animated vocalizers, and stubborn (and brave) little dogs, I have a hard time imagining their being able to deter a thief.

Have fun with your dog! Personally, I agree on the whole, adopt a mutt thing, because our best guard dog is my wolf-dog mix St. Jimmy. He's stopped our house from getting broken into a couple of times just by barking. The burgalars think he's mean, but he's just calling them to play! ((What they don't know won't hurt them...))

Great choice wanting to adopt a mutt. They may not be beautiful, but in my opinion, they're the best dogs a person could ever have. They're so sweet, and they love you no matter what. Now, I'm not saying that I prefer a mutt over a husky, but I'm saying mutts don't deserve the name they're given. "Mutt" sounds so harsh and disgusting, and mixed breeds really aren't. Doesn't just make you angry? Uh.. oops! I should get back on topic.

I'm with Seppala on this one, I doubt a dachshund could scare away a thief, hefty or not. (The thief I mean. XD) They may be loud, but I think the only thing a dachshund could do in that situation would be to annoy the theif or distract the thief because of its cuteness.

You can adopt a pure bred at a shelter too, not just mutts. Here check out the shelter I help out!

Actualy a dashund would be a good guard dog. Size isn't everything check there sharp teeth.

Yeah, I have to agree, but my aunt has a doxen (That's what I call them) and a German Shepard. He's my Shepard's brother and he's the one who protects the house. The doxen only barks when he's hungry. I don't mean all of them do that but still...a mixed breed would be a wiser choice.

Traditionally, and in terms of effectiveness (not only for their voice, but also for their sheer size and/or as two deterrents), breeds like the German Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, Mastiff, Bullmastiff, Rottweiler, Akita, Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, and American Pitbull Terrier will go much farther towards scaring away a thief (or an assailant) than a tiny little Dachshund or Chihuahua (no matter how fierce they may appear, few "bad guys" are going to view them as anything more than either an annoyance or a source of humor.

Yup. Seppela took the words out of my mouth but his words sound better.

Since my house was broken into recently. I was recommended to get a dog. Golly am I happy about it. My grandfather just loves miniature daschunds. I think I'd rather adopt a mutt. Save a life instead of paying more money for a pedigree. Whats your opinion on this?

Definetely go for a rescue dog. Most animal shelters put dogs to sleep if they don't find a home after a few months. Mix breeds are so much more fun than purebreds. :D

I remember when I got Archie the only purebreds at the shelter were a pair of black and white English Springer Spaniels and an Akita. A massive Akita at that.

Yeah. We found St. Jimmy at a shelter and we couldn've asked for a better dog. I love him so much! *hugs Jimmy, who's sitting there chewing on something "MY SOCK?*

I think mutts are better, my dog is a mutt (Doberman/Rottwieler/German Shepherd Cross) and is a great guard dog! I live in one of the dangerous parts of my city and people try to break in alot, my dog has really good ears and when somebody walks past our yard she either runs to the door or barks, and when somebody walks in that she doesn't know she barks at them, but when we tell her to stop she does. She is a really nice dog, she doesn't bite anybody and she loves kids, but she is very protective and when me, my brother and my sister are fighting she barks and pulls away.

She also likes to cuddle. lol

I hear that mixed breeds are easier to handle and aren't prone to as many diseases therefore live a longer life than purebreds?
