Wow, I'm surprised no one came up with a topic like this before....
For me, it's a three-way tie among:
Death of a character
Ending so the rest of the story leads up to it
A Simple Jump into the Action
All three are beginings I've quite enjoyed, both in fanfiction and in other writings. The death of a character is nearly always a pivital point in the story, and it's ussually very well written. Starting with the end, so to speak, sometimes makes the reader root for the protagonist more, hoping that somehow he/she will escape the conflict that usually awaits him/her at the end. And a simple jump into the action, or en medias res if I spelled it correctly, is very effective in that it makes the reader read more carefully to figure out the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the story.
So my vote goes for the jump into the action.
Write on!

Well, with my recent fics-in-progress, I like to write a short Prologue that prepares readers for the main situation(s) of the story.
Other times, (for example) like with my fic "Forgive Me", I started with a major event and then placed flashbacks within the next few parts to develop the story (and help the reader figure out how everything turned out the way it was shown in the beginning). I soon returned to the present and went on from there.
But my advice to you is this: Try different introductions for your story, and try to find the strongest one to keep to help the mood of your story.
It's all up to you! Good luck, and I can't wait to read it when you finish!

I agree with LoneWolf fanwriter, it's a three way tie for me but I think I would go with a jump right into the story. (But that's just the way I do it. There are ways of making a begining good with all the choices, it's how you write it that's the key.)
