Mostly thats why sequels are destroying the original. Because they create ugly copies of the splendit originals.
Jenna is 'uber' cute in the first part, and all other characters motions are superb designed.
Balto whiter colors are nice, and Still drawing is very imposing. I also liked very much the handdraw (I think they are handdraw) ship, plaine and train in the storm.
And the White wolf, oh was so cool, those small eyes and sharp side-eyes and ears. Also loved the Rozi design, very nice.
Also the voice is another major thing that have been spoiled with the sequels.
The Jenna voice from the original was divine, and I loved when she was speaking low and slow ("Suddenly I lost my appetite, This time I prefer them more... cocked, Balto... Hi... (when balto first invite her out), Balto (when she saw that he left for the slade team).
Boris, how can you change the Boris voice? I love so much his accent, it allways cheered me up.
Muc (was this his name? Im talking about the little talking bear), his voice was just hilarious! ("His marking the trail, hes very clever (loved this line with his accent), But of course we were in the water, we got wet...)
All these disapeared in the sequels.
The story of the original was splendit composed, and what it maked me cry at the end, was when I actualy found out the actor (real-live scene) was actualy Rozi, and at the end, the story was based on true facts. IMO, the introduction and the ending using Real-Live action was perfect as the movie was based on true fact.
I also had my eyes a little wet when the ship, plane and train where struggling in the storm the man was talking about the situation (I usualy get touched in such moments).
The first sequel have been spoiled when they decided to not keep it real anymore, and the introduction of the songs in the movie. Finalizing with the last sequel where it did keep it partialy real (it was the same town and no mistyc things anymore) but screwd it again with songs in movie AND with change of scenes (see the song when the girl songs with Boris), reaching lame Disney type where pink elefants are building piramids in "I can't wait to be a King" in The Lion King movie.
IMO the hole sequels where just movies maked for infuse the company money after a grand masterpiece named Balto created in 1995.
See it by the difference of the people worked at it, the difference of voices, etc.
In the end, I want to say that this is just my personal opinion and again, this is one of the few commentaries I ususaly make in english, my foreign language, so sory for the misspellings.
Oh, btw, I liked how they drew Aleu, was nice.

Well, first I think you wanted to say that you hate the sequels, not the originals (title of the topic)...
I agree with all that, it's always a shame that the animation is done outside the US because of a much lower budget.
But from that point, I'm not sure that Universal is the most to blame. Look at Disney with TLK : It was a huge success, and yet they made the sequel with a much lower budget.
Considering that Balto wasn't a huge success at all, they obviously couldn't make a sequel with a high budget like the original.
In fact, we are also to blame, because nearly no one saw it in theaters. If it would have been a success, I'm sure they would have considered making a sequel with a real budget.
So the question is here : would you have prefered no sequel, or DTV sequels? I think the second choice is better...As far as I know, they aren't forcing the customers to see them (unlike Disney).
In my opinion, where I blame Universal, is the fact that the first sequel was entirely different from the original. Even if the animation is low, they shouldn't have made something that different. But you'll also see some people that prefer the sequel to the original, for that reason.
But, I think they did a much better job with the second sequel. Yes there are songs, but only two if you don't count "Everything Flies" which is more a background music such as "Reach of the light" for the original. And I believe that Jenna's song was nice. But Stella's one was horrible, everyone will agree with this.
Anyway, of course the sequels are made for money, but which films are not made for money? No company would make a film just for fun...That's obvious. Even the original Balto, even if they surely did not expect much from it. And another thing, there is a big difference between the people (managers) who order a new sequel, and the people who actually work on it. So even if a sequel is "made for money", the people working on it can sometimes make efforts to make it as best as possible. And so, that's why I think they did a good job with Wings of change, considering all the limits and the low budget they had. (Take the example of the songs. I asked to the associate producer of the sequels why there are songs, and he answered that the managing directors force them to include at least three songs, because "kids like songs". So the best they could do is make them fit the story...)
Of course, no sequel will be ever as good as the original, especially on the animation side, but I think they are still worth watching. Consider them as fanfics, for example. Don't you read fanfics? They are not made by the original authors, yet they are still fun to read. Well for me it's the same with DTV sequels. Except that it's animated.

Yea sory, I edited the title
Thanks very much for feedback
Maybe more will write?
Oh and btw, people can make superb movies with a minimum of budget.
That one is The Secret of NIMH. I don't remember exactely, but I think there were only 13 designers for the hole movie. Just 13. It sayd that it had one of the smallest budget an animation movie had. If I can re-find the page I will show you. So it is possible when you realy want to.
But this is the difference betwin the directors.
Simon Wells did a terrific job, for witch I will love this movie forever, while Phil Weinstein maked me wish he never created the sequels.

Balto 1 was good but its sequels that followed could have been better, besides I bet its mostley for profits.

I haven't seen Balto 3 yet...So I wouldn't know if it's good or not.
But all I have to say is that the sequel was definitely worse than the first movie. The first movie had great animation and everything. But then came the sequel and the animation differed greatly. But as Steet said before me, they did have to work with a minimum budget and such.
I still think they could've tried a little harder though.
