Fern had been staring out the window and jumped a little when Humphrey spoke again. "Oh, uh, yeah. Of course," she said unsurely.

Humphrey looked at Fern worriedly and asked hurriedly, fearing the worst possible outcome "What's wrong Fern? You look like something's troubling you."

"Oh, it's nothing. Just thinking about what you said, like I promised," Fern teased.

Humphrey looked confused and said uncertainly "O....Okay." He started working on the lab but kept looking at Fern, studying her reactions.

Fern worked on the lab quietly, not saying much after that.

Humphrey sighed when the lab finally was done and then the bell rung. He looked at Fern and said before getting up and leaving for his next class "Just remember what I told you."

"I don't think I'll be able to forget," Fern said absent-mindedly as she gathered her books and walked to her locker.

Cody was at his locker getting his books for his next class when he heard Fern's approaching footsteps and looked at her angrily. He said straightly with no touch of emotion in his tone"Hi Fern."

"Hello, Cody," Fern said simply, just a little more emotion in her voice than him, but still not much.

Cody shook his head and slammed his locker shut, bending it in some. He started walking to his class past Fern and elbowed her hurtfully when he passed her.

Fern kept quiet as Cody elbowed passed her, and sighed when he was gone.

Cody went to his next class and when that class was over, he went to lunch, got a plate of food, and sat down at a table all by himself.

Humphrey and Elizabeth were sitting at their usual table, waiting for the others to come and sit down with them.

Fern sat down next to Elizbeth with her plate of food, keeping quiet as she picked at it.

Kate and Lana came and sat down at the table to. Lana said, "There is something weird about that new kid. I was just in class with him and all he did was glare out the window. I don't think he's enjoying his first day here.

Humphrey nodded his head and said sadly "He probable isn't. This isn't a place for people like him."

Elizabeth looked at Cody and said "He must feel all alone in this school."

Fern shrugged. "Maybe," she muttered.

"Should we invite him to sit with us?" Kate suggested. Fern finally looked up, her eyes wide with horror at having Cody sitting with them.
