Shay shrugged. "At least they got us out of there. And they haven't done anything bad yet or anything. I mean, she can be a bit secretive, but I would be too, around people I had just met anyways."

"Hey Shay, look. If I get myself into crap, I get myself into crap. If you need to save your butt by leaving me behind, leave me behind. We're not quite evened out in years we've lived yet, and you haven't lived as long as me. Just watch it ok? I'd rather get caught then have you caught trying to save me, even if I escape."

Shay took a moment to process the words that flowed out of Hera's mouth. Being the loyal person she was, she immediatly argued. "If you get yourself into crap, it's my job to help you out. And I won't save myself if it means leaving you behind, either. Listen, you've been my best and only friend since I was in that place, and you still are. You're like an older sister. And no matter what you say, I'm sticking with you. Okay?" She was a bit surprised at herself, and how forceful the words were.

Hera swallowed. While she admired Shay's bravery, she needed her friend to understand that she wasn't worth the risk.
"I won't be getting into any crap then." she replied. "And neither will you, if we can help it."

Shay nodded, then the smell of smoke filled her nose. She coughed, and turned to face the source. A campfire had been created, and the wind had blown the thick grey clouds towards them. Shay coughed again, and moved to a different spot.

Now that the smoke was no longer directed at them, Shay found the fire and it's warmth more pleasant.

I just realized... where's Total?
Hera wrapped her wings around her; the effect of heat created by her wings and the fire was glorious. She hadn't even realized she was cold. She stared into the crackling embers, trying to imagine that the tan cover around her was really a jacket, and she was just an ordinary girl, on a perfectly ordinary vacation, with a perfectly ordinary family. Family. That jolted her out of her thought process. Since when were they family? Shay was her family, not these strangers she had just met recently. The last thing she needed was more people to protect than her adopted 'little sister'.
"Don't get too attached." she muttered to herself, hoping Shay didn't hear her. If she had to choose between Shay and them, it couldn't be difficult, it had to be simple. Hesitation could kill them, or cost her the only true family she had. No more fantasizing. She thought to herself. This is the real world.

Ooc:// Well, it started when they rescued them from the Institute. That's originally where they would've gotten Total. But since Hera and Shay were the only ones they had time to rescue, Total is still in the Institute.
If Shay had listened hard, she would've picked up Hera's mutters. But while Hera had been lost in her train of thought, Shay had moved to sit on the ground by Nudge. She grinned at the caramel-colored girl beside her, and Nudge returned it. Max opened a backpack. I didn't notice that before...Shay thought, a bit surprised. But she didn't hesitate to accept the food that was passed out. "Hera, want some food?" Iggy had already refused, so the rest of them were muching on apples and granola bars. Shay had waited to eat.

Awww...  "Sure." Hera replied, as she was jerked out of her train of thought. She eagerly munched on a bright red apple; she hadn't realized how hungry she was before she was offered this food. She didn't take any granola bars however, since no matter how hungry she was, she would always hate them.

Shay bit into the granola bar. She seemed to be the exact opposite of Hera on this matter. She loved granola bars, something about the crunch and taste made it enjoyable.

Seeing that quite a few fries had fallen into the pocket of her coat, Hera took them out and ate them, only realizing looking at the last fry that they were covered in lint.
"Excuse me." she said. "I'm going to go be sick now." From the corner of her eye, she caught Max snickering, and sent her a withering glare.

Even Shay had to resist the urge to giggle at Hera's expression. But she did it mentally, thinking that Hera wouldn't enjoy the laughter. Her suspicions were proved right as she shot a glare at the snickering Max.

Hera smiled. It was nice to be annoyed about the petty things in life. As much as she hated to admit it, Max was growing on her, though more like a wart then anything else.
