Ranger had made it a good deal down the mountain, when he heard barks behind him. Stopping, he turned to see his friends running at him. He growled angrily. "Stop running! You'll slip and fall at those speeds."

Tally shook her head, then hurtled across to the other side.
Kali slowed a bit.

Ranger scoffed angrily. "I don't want anybody to mention anything else about the end o the world, understand? I never thought Ira could be such a loony."

'Fine, Grouchy. We won't mention anything," Tally said, sounding miffed, her brown eyes containing a glimmer of teasing in them though.
Kali felt releived when her paws hit solid ground, and was soon beside Ranger, Tuck, and Tally, feeling her fear subside slightly.

With that, the dogs made their way back down the mountain to their normal lives.

November 30, 2012
Several weeks had past since the 4 dogs had seen Ira. Now it was much colder, and several inches of snow covered the ground.
Ranger was outside of the vet office's door patiently waiting. Today was the day Dakota was scheduled to be released from care. His wounds were a bit more serious than originally thought, which contributed to the extended time he had to spend in the Vet's care.
With Ranger stood a light brown Fox Terrier named Charles. Charles was a good friend of Dakota. They had known each other since they were tiny pups, and he really wanted to be there the moment Dakota was released. He sniffed impatiently, "How much longer do you think we have to wait?" Ranger smiled. "It shouldn't be too much longer. I heard the vet tell Dakota's people that he'll be out before noon." "Well, I certainly hope so. It's freezing out here," Charles shivered. "Ha! Grow some longer fur then, Charles." Charles bared his teeth. "I would if I could, fuzzball."

Tally was standing beside Ranger, and broke in, although shefound their banter amusing. "Alright, no need to be exchanging remarks when Dakota comes back." She said. As if on cue, the male dog was coming out of the vet's office, tail wagging and only a few bandages stuck on him.
"Hey guys." Dakota said warmly. "Ranger, Tally, Charles." He licked his friends muzzle in greeting, having a close bond with the small dog.

Charles licked back, then stepped back grinning. "Good to see you're all right. It was pretty scare for awhile back there. Ranger told me how bad you were." Ranger winked. "All I told him was that you were at the vet's. He then went off making up stories about what he thought happened to you." "And the majority of the dogs in town believed me didn't they?" Ranger rolled his eyes. "Yeah right. Like they would have believed that Dakota was missing three legs and a tail. You were too cheerful. If he really was that beaten up, you definitely would have been a lot more serious."

"Maybe you should just chop of my legs to prove you're right," Dakota smiled. "Nice to see you were still exaggerating while I was in there," he teased.

Charles smiled, then turned to Ranger. "So you told me yesterday that we were going back up to the hot springs where you found Dakota today." Ranger shook his head. "I said nothing of the sort. Stop putting words in my mouth. I told you I wanted to keep life normal."
"Well, the jokes on you, fuzzy. That is the normal thing we do around this time of year, or at least it was until Dakota's little adventure." Ranger sighed, frustrated by the sarcastic little dog. He then turned to Tally and shrugged, looking for a second opinion.

Knowing what the black and white dog was asking from her, she shook her head. "I'm not going to give my opinion. You guys are too fun to watch," she said, an amused tone in her voice.
Dakota laughed at Tally's words.

Ranger pulled a face at Tally, expressing how he felt about being the only dog to make the decisions, then turned back to Charles. "We aren't going up there. It's still too..." Ranger suddenly stopped, his ears twitching. He turned to the other dogs confusedly. "You guys hear something?" Without giving the other dogs a chance to respond, suddenly the ground underneath their paws started shaking violently. A loud rumble filled the air as the buildings surrounding them creaked and groaned. The sound of screams and breaking glass could be heard throughout the small town, and two cars collided in an intersection about a block from where the dogs stood. The quake only lasted about 30 seconds, and then it got dead quiet. The dogs stood trembling, unable to move or speak for several seconds afterward.

After a silent moment filled with fear from the quake, Tally spoke up. "What was that?" she asked, her voice as shaky as the ground had been moments beforehand.
"I-I don't know," Dakota said, not caring about the stutter in his words, only wanting to break the fearful silence.

Ranger stood uncertainly, like he was expecting the ground to start shaking again. Hearing Tally speaking brought him back to reality. "Jeeze, I have no idea what that was!"
All around the dogs, people were emerging from the surrounding buildings, looking around with frightened looks on their faces.
Ranger gestured to his friends. "Come on, let's get away from all these people." Then he started walking through the growing crowd towards the edge of town."

Tally walked close beside the black and white dog, her legs shaking from the surprise and fear at the short but violent shaking of the ground.
Dakota was shakier than Tally as he walked after them, still nervoulsy waiting for the aftershock.

The dogs had made their way to the edge of town, away from the ensuing mayhem from panicked people. Suddenly Ranger stopped, staring in shocked silence at the road in front of him. Going lengthwise for about 30 feet was a foot wide crack in the pavement. Small amounts of steam were wafting from what seemed like an endless depth inside the crevice.
Ranger shook his head in amazement. "I guess we figured out where the shaking came from. What do you think caused it?"
