The trees unwrapped their white branches, and behind them was an army of multi-colored lizards with dozens of different expressions.

Nook jumped and his fur stood straight on end. "AHH!" he screamed like a frightened little girl.

Vetch grabbed Nook's neck and growled, "You're not making this situation any better!"

"I never thought a tree would be a traitor," Rue said, her claws already extanded and ready to use.

The trees them outstretched their branches and took out a column of soldiers, creating a path. "Go!" they boomed. "Now!"

Nook jumped and bounced off of Vetch's head, leading the way out of the circle of soldier lizards. "Come oonnn!" he pleaded as he sprinted away.

Rue felt a bit confused, but yelled a quick thanks and nevermind as she started to run through the path, hoping Vetch and Nook were following.

Vetch stumbled to his feet, tripping over his paws once, then bolting off again. Rue was now in front, and Nook was in front of Vetch, who was now in the back.

Suddenly, a white lizard struck Nook with a thunderstick and shocked him, then a yellow lizard picked him up and put him in a bag.

"Nook!" Vetch yelled. "Rue, they've got Nook!"

Rue skidded to a stop. "Not for long they dont!" she cried then leapt at the lizard who had him. She grabbed the bag, throwing it out of reach and dodged the thunderstick, lunging for the neck of the lizard.

A black lizard crept up behind Rue with an angry expression, and he held a long, sharp spear above her her back.

Vetch noticed and revved up to the spot, leaping to catch the spear in his mouth, but the lizard had changed direction and he stabbed Vetch clear down the throat. Vetch tried to scream, but he could feel and hear nothing but the smooth edge of the spear, and the strange type of metal it was made out of. When the lizard pulled it out, Vetch had no more control over his body. He fell to the ground, his eyes still open, but unconscious.

Rue watched with wide eyes, her violet gaze horrified. "Vetch!" she said ina strangled cry. She leapt at the lizard who had done this, and felt her claws dig into his scaly skin. When he fell to the ground, lifeless, she had completley frogotten and didn't care about the other lizards, who were still there. She ran to Vetch, her heart pounding, seeming in her throat. "Vetch," she cried again, nudging his body. His chest fell and rose shallowly, and each breath seemed like it would be the last.

Vetch felt Rue nudging him, so he gathered up all his strength to whisper, "Get...Nook...go..."

Rue felt torn, give up Vetch and go, or they all would be captured again. She finally shook her head. "You're coming to," she said firmly. SHe opened the bag that Nook was in with her claws and rushed back to Vetch's side, grabbing his scruff.

Vetch felt Rue grab his scruff, but he looked up at her and said, "Go!" sounding serious, but still out of breath and wheezing.

"Ok," she managed to say around a mouthful of Vetch. She started to run, amazingly fast considering how large he was in comparison to her.

A pink lizard with a confused expression took out a whip with loops all over it, and the loops were covered with the same metal the trees were made of. He hit Rue repeatedly, mostly on the legs to get her to stop moving.

Rue collapsed quickly, dropping Vetch as she did so.

Vetch felt himself hit the ground, and even though he could fight, he could try to stand and intimidate them. He picked up a weak leg, then another, then another, then another. He was wobbly, but he was up. His lungs were on fire. He tried to take a step, but was then whipped by the pink lizard. And everything instantly went dark.
