Not to be a stickler, but I never used the words "forced to listen to". Again, we could just choose not to listen to complaints, but where would that get us?

I agree with Kelsey on this. Granted, the French side doesn't get as much activity, but it's handled by three or four mods. On top of that, at least TWO of them go above and beyond by building more sites at the same time as they mod. (Maybe they have a lot of free time, but what the hay.)
You can't argue that Steet's proposed feature would at least HELP. I cannot see anything wrong with it; with that, one can mod EVERY site at once rather than having to go to individual sites, which DOES take a little while. No, it won't solve the problem completely, but it WILL at least help.

Not to be a stickler, but I never used the words "forced to listen to". Again, we could just choose not to listen to complaints, but where would that get us? You're right, I did. However you did overexagerate and made it seem like you had no choice. Assuming the mods all work together, and communicate with each other on the mod box, you personally wouldn't be required to view these, as Moss or Brown wolf could have told you what needs to be done or changed. The reason I'm replying so much is because you assumed these complaints was a hinderance on the moderator's productivity (my comment asking what could be done to help the mods) when it's entirely optional for you to view these, and if the staff works together you don't need to view these yourself. So it's not really a problem, it's just that you don't like it. Do you see where I'm getting at?

And that person was not only one of the very first members of this site, but a very high-ranking one eventually. And he did a great deal of damage in very subtle ways. And even upon his "departure", people STILL were praising him, because no one was ever allowed to see the damage he actually had done when it was finally uncovered. It will be just like mods, everyone will agree and love our co-webmaster, then hate them in less then a year and want another one or get him a replacement. First of all, it wouldn't need to be a current mod. But not every staff member deserves their positions, and not every staff member remains a positive and productive contributor. That much is a painfully-proven fact on THIS site. But there are ways to engage in conflict resolution. Unfortunately, no one on this site practices them...or they practice them with piss-poor incompetence. OR they simply tell people to "knock it off, move on and be nice". Such stupid "advice" solves nothing. And bellowing out orders to people only makes them angry. None of you are sergeants or corporate executives. You're there to help. And to resolve conflicts...not create more with harsh answers and "do this or else" tactics (and let's not pretend this doesn't happen. Because it DOES). Well, we have to try yo make everyone happy, if we don't trouble comes anyway. Also, now I think you are overreacting. Not every one of us go around yelling at everyone to "knock it off, move on and be nice" why? Because it's not like you all listen anyway. We try to help, and we do. Many members can testify we have solved problems without our 'bellowing.' Some users just don't respond well unless we give them 'harsh answers.' I am sure we only use that last resort. It is easier to solve conflicts without people PMing us and complaining.

I understand, and you have been the more calm and understanding people on this forum, so I thank you for that. The complaints do kinda put us down because some of us are trying the best we can, yet it doesnt seem like enough. Hopefully though, this can be solved. I think this part has run its course. If the situation regards what other people are saying, and not me specifically, it would be better to address those people specifically. Moss wrote: I never accused you of saying that, but it obvious by the comments people have made. (No necessarily on this forum) Same thought here as the one above. In the past, on a few RARE occasions, those who have never served on staff here before have done a very effective job in their duties...on various levels. Some people here have served as moderators or admins on other websites. And have done so very effectively. Just because they have not served here does not exclude their ability to do a very good job. Recycling most of the former members, or making existing staff members multitask, is not necessarily the answer. Moss wrote: Also, now I think you are overreacting. No, not really. I've seen plenty enough of it in the past, even the RECENT past, and I stand by what I said. Some moderators also don't respond unless members make pointed complaints. So there is as much culpability on one end as the other.
Now I would like to briefly address this question of enough/not enough staff members. In this topic, we've seen both staff members and regular members say that MORE staff members are needed, and that more staff members are NOT needed. We've seen them say that the lack of sufficient staff members IS the problem, and that it ISN'T. We'd better darned well decide which it is, because it seems to me that no resolution of members' concerns (and even mods' concerns) is going to happen. You can say all you want about the French side. And kudos to them for pulling off a smooth management of that side of AS. There is a group of good people there. They work together, and they have the continued support of the members there. And it is rather apparent that they manage their end of the site benevolently and efficiently. At least, in as far as I can discern. Could we learn a thing or three from them? Probably. But the English side is NOT the French side. There are many differences. Not the least of which (and, I think, the most IMPORTANT of which) is that the English side is the hub for a far greater number of AS members, who come from all over the world. Far more of them know how to speak English than know how to speak French. By nature, they will be drawn to the English side. It is a foregone conclusion that there are going to be FAR more reports, FAR more submissions, FAR more communications. That, folks, requires more staffing. This is not about weakening or minimizing the existing staff members. It's about getting them the support many of them CLEARLY SAID they need and would very much want. So if that is important enough to them, and an apparent issue for many members, then it should be accomplished. Either it is a problem, or it isn't. And given the great amount of comments to that effect, it clearly is.

If everyone will please forgive me for two consecutive postings, I should like to issue some closing thoughts. Because I am backing out of this discussion and my entire support for the on-going effort to make things right. TWO situations...one in the wee hours of the morning this morning, and one shortly before noon my time, made it very evident to me that I have to. I shall provide evidence for my thoughts, while totally reserving the privacy of those with whom I have communicated, for the sake of being respectful to them...something which too many people on this site seem to think I'm incapable of being in spite of countless factual cases to the contrary. If the only thing you get out of this is some perception that I'm bawwing or feeling sorry for myself, then you're missing the point of it entirely. Which is another common flaw of most members on this website. Misconstruing points and context. There is a bigger picture here. If you take the time to digest it, you may actually GET it and not end up doing what most people usually do in response to my posts...blow up or accuse me of flame baiting and attacking and causing trouble. Or I'll end up wrongfully targeted again. More than is already the case. *Shrug* That's probably what will happen.
Whenever I throw MY proverbial hat into a discussion or situation that is already impassioned and crucial to the website, invariably I end up targeted by certain powers and their friends in order to get me to back off. Often it works. Why? Because I hold no cards to help me stay the course. I will always end up losing if I stick to it too long. Once again, it is very evident to me that this is the case. I have provided an example below, in a "hidden text" so as not to bulk up this post visually UNLESS anyone cares to read it. If they wish, so be it. I am sure some readers are already thinking I'm bawwwing like a shameless martyr over this. Whatever. I really don't care. This post is the last I am going to pitch into this anyway. Even if someone responds directly -- and whether or not it is critical, flame baiting or anything else. I'm DONE with it as of this post...and the larger issue at hand. Now to the first item. If you want to read it, fine. It's in the box below. If not, don't. I don't really care. I'm sick of once again being misused, manipulated, and plotted against simply because I wanted to participate and had an opinion on this. JerseyCaptain is not allowed to have an opinion on Animation Source, and he is not allowed to share it with anyone, under threat of punishment and ridicule...and probably worse. So I am going to once again back out, given no other choice but a probable ban for daring to speak my mind.
Hidden text : click to show
In a PM from today, a member shared with me certain information which made it very, VERY evident that I am again running the risk of reprisal by certain moderators for speaking my mind. And for simply commenting on other things. I am hardly unused to that. It has happened a LOT over the years. There is a "thought police" mentality on this site, where a person is not permitted to speak, passionately or otherwise, if it annoys certain people...especially people in positions of authority. It would seem that I, not only as one of the middle-aged adults on this site--one of SEVERAL--but also as a person of passionate beliefs and one not willing to play the usual petty games others play on here, am a constant and recurring target for those who have the power to silence me if I get "too out of hand". That member's PM said, among other things, and I quote (I removed another member's name that this member referred to here...another member who has often been unfairly targeted...probably in part because that person is simply friendly with me and often agrees with me. Golly, what a dangerous thing THAT is: "Anyway, on THIS subject, **** has been blunt but not overly rude. Yes, a little bit, but a fair amount. Seems you on the other hand are dragging topics on WAY after a point where they could have stopped. (I'll take an example from the forum, where you and Moss have been arguing over 'naming specific mods'.
I feel that if you wish to have a 'passionate discussion' about something, you could take it to PMs so that 1) it can be made clear that you're discussing for the sake of discussing and not to flame-bait as a bunch of mods and even a few members are taking it, or 2) clarify as such in the discussion forum itself, with no text around it for it to be lost in the middle."The problem here? Once AGAIN, my honest efforts to participate in an already impassioned discussion, in which I offered my opinions AND countered misunderstandings of my statements AND wrongful implications of my contextual intentions, are inferred to be "flame baiting", or that they would be viewed as such. WHY? Simply because I expressed my opinion with bold words and strong sentiments? That automatically infers a flame bait? What is WRONG with you people?? However, to answer that inference (from that PM), I note the following screen shot from the topic this member mentioned. Note my requests to Moss that we leave it alone now because it is getting us nowhere. A request I made. I'm not inferring that she would not have sooner or later. But I did. To head off an argument. Funny how people always seem to miss whenever I do these things, and only see what they WANT to see. Thus:
Here is the other item. It's long. You want to read it? Fine. Not read it? Fine. Again, I don't care. But it may be something some of you will feel is valuable or at least worth reading.
Hidden text : click to show
This is from an off-site discussion I had with a member of long standing on AS. One who is currently still a member and also involved in these discussions (and related ones concerning the site). This is a member I consider a friend, and with whom I have had many productive discussions. And I respect that person's opinion and privacy, and I HOPE TO GOD it will remain so (it does with me still...which is why I have completely hidden this person's identity, and taken out maybe one or two statements which could reveal whom this person is, which are not vital to the larger context of the conversation anyway). But this particular discussion did not go so well. I don't know the reason...perhaps it was the early hour. I certainly was clear-headed enough at the time. I am not sure this person was or not. Maybe they were. But I was very put off by a lot of what this person said, because it ran counter to a lot of things they have said to me, and openly, before. And of recent date. It makes me wonder about what is really going on behind the scenes when I cannot see or be otherwise party to discussions about me. Because, when I consider someone a friend, it is HONEST. Sometimes I wonder about the nature of friendships in this community, and whether or not any of them are real, or just so much posturing without any substance. I keep hoping that my faith in this person is well-founded. However, I have removed the person's name, or any other specific references, to protect the privacy of individuals. Because I'm just that way. No one ever seems to see it, but I am.
Please note, in particular, my opening comments to this particular person. Please also note my pointed views on what is very wrong with this place, and why I feel that this whole thing is HOPELESS. This is how I feel, and regardless of how people are going to take this, I am going to reveal it without hiding ANYTHING. I guess if that gets me banned, well then we'll know what's really going on here, won't we?
JerseyCaptain says: You have a sec?
** says: What's up?
JerseyCaptain says: I wanted to explain myself, and offer you some hope...
It is my hope that you understand that I am not attacking the mods, or trying to draw you or anyone else into an argument. I don't want you and I to fall back into the same bitter arguments we had a few years back over the same situation that is developing on the rant board on AS. It's a passionate situation, and I am only trying to help...not hinder.
I've spoken very highly of you in Mighty's topic, and more generally in the rant board... Because I feel you have earned it
** says: Thank you. JC, you have to understand that while help is needed for the current moderation staff, it can also hurt it, especially since there are so few to trust. Not everyone can handle that kind of power without abusing it in some form or another as we have seen in the past. You know?
JerseyCaptain says: TRUST me, I know. I have seen more than my share of abuses...heaped upon me, upon Mighty, and upon others. And you know I know.
**says: Yeah, I do
JerseyCaptain says: What I don't understand is that, everytime we all get close to resolving the issues that NEED resolving on this stupid site, somehow a wrench falls into the machinery, and everyone starts becoming defensive and digging in against each other instead of swallowing their pride and working TOGETHER to solve it.
And I have been a mod on two seperate occasions, so I have the right to say this: the mods become very defensive when this stuff gets publicly discussed even though, more privately, many of them will agree with the complaints. Forming the wagons and becoming increasingly defensive and angry about general complaints, where no one is named (and where praises are also thrown out to acknowledge what good the mods DO do, is stupid.
** says: Pride is something that will always keep anything good from happening. Pride is what caused the world to fall into sin. And as long as the world is what it is, as long as sinful people don't realize their sin, pride will find a way to creep in and entangle.
JerseyCaptain says: Mm. ** would love that quote. ROFL
Unfortunately, profound religious wisdom will fall on deaf ears on AS. We need more secular logic. For good or ill.
JerseyCaptain says: We will never resolve these things...never. Not so long as people cannot meet somewhere in the middle, swallow their pride and FIX it.
** says: And there in lies an issue. Actually carrying with - as I like to call it - reformation.
JerseyCaptain says: Feh. I just HATE the fact that we all want this nonsense solved, but whenever we get to the point of discussing it, a large portion of the same people who WANT it solved end up backsliding when they see a few things mentioned that they presume is either personal attacks or slights upon their particular group. Case in point: the existing mods.
And any of those who are trying to score brownie points with steet. Like, oh, say **. Whom I KNOW has said elsewhere that he feels new and more staff members ARE needed. Which he contradicted in that one rant topic.
Why? Because steet's watching. And steet seems to oppose adding more staff.
** says: Steet opposes a lot of things. He opposes things that - I think deep down - he knows is good for the site
Such as... getting rid of unrelated and sparkle characters.
JerseyCaptain says: Which begs the question of the relative condition of his clarity of perception. lol Or his relative qualities as a "leader" (site manager)
** says: Or all of the above. He can't stick with one decision.
JerseyCaptain says: Well, we've got his attention. That is a small step towards something. If he posts, he's reading. And that's a start.
What people don't seem to appreciate is that the louder the complaints, the more likely steet has to throw in eventually. And, sooner or later, the more likely he wil do...something. History shows that steet acts only when enough complaints are raised...and raised very strongly.
** says: Yeah, that's true
JerseyCaptain says: The mods have to stop taking this stuff personally and just see the bigger picture.
Stonewalling the process is going to get us right back where we started.
** says: And that's where we don't need to be. It doesn't do any good
JerseyCaptain says: So what are we going to do about that, **?
** says: I would say bide our time, but we've been doing that for more than two years now. There is talk about a committee on the Restoring Animation Source Fan News though.
JerseyCaptain says: I like the committee talk yes. But biding time? No. That's what got us all here. Time is well on us to do something. If this fizzles out AGAIN because of ridiculous defensiveness on the part of the group of mods now commenting in that rant topic, it's going to fall apart. Steet will see a handful of staffers (and **) arguing for the status quo, and he will feel he has to do NOTHING. And it will become a train wreck.
** says: Which we don't need. We've had train wrecks in the past, we don't need more
JerseyCaptain says: I mean, seriously. If we don't take a few chances for the sake of this site, then why are we still even members?
** says: And what's the point of a Fan site if its being continually overrun with characters that should even be there, let alone exist
JerseyCaptain says: I still think the larger issue now is to quell this overt defensiveness by people like **, **, and any OTHER mod who thinks everyone's out to get them...AGAIN.
And get them to fall in on this effort to do GOOD for AS. Even to get them the help that you all so desperately say you want and need.
** says: ** and ** have their own lives outside of AS. They're not saying we need help, per say. They know what can happen with help, especially if we're being helped by the wrong people.
JerseyCaptain says: We ALL have our own lives outside of AS. I despise people saying that. They are no different than any other one of us. That is irrelevant.
** says: But it is true, is it not? It's just some members freak out when their stuff doesn't get validated right away.
JerseyCaptain says: Conversely, does it NOT seem a contradiction to you to say "we don't need help" and yet to come back with "we have lives outside of AS, and can only get around to so much at a time. We're only a small number of people doing a lot of work"?
I see that as a MAJOR contradiction.
I'm shocked that no one else does!
it blows my mind
** says: Not everyone sees things in the same. If we did, there'd be no free will
JerseyCaptain says: That's a little outside of the scope of this website, **.
We're not talking communism or Big Brother. We're just talking about stated contradictions.
** says: Contradictions are gonna happen, JC, you know that.
JerseyCaptain says: Jesus, **. But a contradiction like that is one of the biggest problems the site has! And it has to be corrected! You can't ask members in one breath to be tolerant of "there's only so many of us to handle so much work" and then say "we don't need help"! That's ridiculous!
There is no defense for it!
** says: Okay, then the question is, do we need help, or don't we? Is it the matter of mods or the matter of the fact that some sites aren't as popular as the others?
JerseyCaptain says: As steet has said himself, it shouldn't matter how active some of the sources are. And actually, I agree with that. Mostly. What DOES matter is that enough members are bothered by the fact that, on the busier sources, things are taking time. I have never, ever, EVER seen a site where such delays happen, and then the excuse-making and "back off" talk starts.
The FACT is some of the existing mods don't want more mods added because it cuts into their control factor. They will never be able to admit to that, but you and I BOTH know that, either on a conscious or subconscious level, that IS the bottom line.
The immediately presume it's a negative reflection upon them. That is absolutely stupid and childish.
And it is contrary to a successful attitude.
I know this from working in the business world. Most of the members who are teens and even young adults don't get it and DON'T have a clue. Because they're too busy worrying about their egos and the perception of their peers. Their lack of life experience makes them blind to it. And foolish.
No WONDER this site keeps stalling and failing.
And most of the members are too immature and too hypersensitive to hear that and deal with it as they should.
** says: Not every member is gonna be mature, not even those in their twenties
JerseyCaptain says: I keep throwing out logic, and you keep responding with platitudes.
You're defending the status quo. Don't. You have shown that you don't believe it yourself.
** says: I consider ** and ** my friends, JC. They're only human, they're flawed just as you and I are. We cannot force them to admit that either the current moderation staff needs help or it doesn't. The other problem - perhaps one of the roots - is that ** and ** aren't around as they should be. And, from what I've seen, they don't report in to the moderation box. Then again...
... I don't either all that much, but I am around, doing what I can, as you yourself know.
JerseyCaptain says: **, I am NOT out to get **, and I am not trying to lay personal attacks against either of them. Has ** pissed me off with bad modding in the recent past? Hell yes. Is my whole participation in this just a secret attempt to attack any mod? NO. And it never ever was. Not here, and not in the past. Stop thinking that.
** says: Then you might wanna tell them that, without logic. Straight up, point blank. A simple question.
JerseyCaptain says: As far as I know, ** does not think I am out to get him. ** may, but ** knows very well that some things done to me were wrong and were reported to steet.
I will not apologize for those reports.
Any issues I have with ** are no reflection upon how I feel about you. And they should not affect how you feel about me. If they do, then you are being unfair.
** says: Opinions are strong and can have a positive and negative impact. I have no issues with ** or **. As far as you're concerned, any squabbles we had are in the past.
JerseyCaptain says: Then the question of ** or ** should not even have come up. ** and I have had productive conversations in the past. *I* only mentioned these two because they were the ones primarily posting in opposition to augmenting the staff...against all reason.
** says: Okay, if you were in their position, would you be opposed to their words?
JerseyCaptain says: If I were in the position of a moderator on the English side, given current staffing levels AND what you said about ** and ** (which I am keenly aware of and agree with), I would certainly not be opposing the staff being augmented to help get things done.
**, for example, just cleared out a bunch of reports I made MONTHS ago, which no moderator attended to. Now, is it because they were *MY* reports, or because they simply didn't get around to them, or because they were too busy to?
** says: I'm not entirely sure.
JerseyCaptain says: But it is evidence of the larger problem.
** says: That mods don't care or that they need help?
JerseyCaptain says: The latter obviously
** says: Hmm... One of the things members lack is patience.
JerseyCaptain says: And one thing many mods lack is humility (after attaining their positions)
** says: Humility doesn't come so easily, especially if you're not taught it
JerseyCaptain says: That doesn't alleviate the problem
I could just as easily say the same about patience
** says: Same thing. If you're not taught it, you'll never get it, and if you do, you're lucky
JerseyCaptain says: I think we've exhausted this. Besides, I need to get a little sleep.
** says: So do I
JerseyCaptain says: Good night

Quote: Ahhh xD Thanks, it was bugging me since I couldn't put a name on you (I recognized your avvie MLP charrie) Yeah, most people tend to remember a Zebragaus. Jersey: So, if I didn't missread any of that, the new staff has mods that want to silence you?

If we did think that about anyone, it's because they brought it upon themselves.

Seriously guys, stop. Half of you forget the the moderators are human, busy, and probably tired with their job. They are doing volunteer work, and its unfair to expect so much from them when they get absolutely nothing in return. And whats wrong with putting their real life first? This is the freaking internet, there are more important things in life and its okay for the moderators to show more concern for that (if that IS the case).
I assume its not easy trying to maintain 20 different sites, especially when more than half of them are beyond inactive. I don't blame them for not being frequent on other websites when they barely indicate a breath of life in em. And I really don't think adding more members to their staff will make much of a difference, since that won't change the level of inactivity that some of these Sources experience.
Note, I am not targeting anyone here at all. I just find this arguement as pointless as the "sparkedogs" complaint. Both sides will end up disappointed, regardless of what action is taken, so it really doesn't matter who "wins". Actually in the last few pages it's turned into what the members could do to help the mods, and suggestions to improve work.

My response was more aimed towards the original post XD I doubt that we can do much to help, quite honestly. The best we can do for the mods is to be patient and stop complaining so much. Oh I see. My bad lol. Well, we could probally have instant activations, and simply have the report system to remove things that are against the rules, like on dA and youtube.
