First we need to define Balto as a definite personality, as both voice actors did an equally good job of voicing the different personalities of Balto.
Balto 1: Kevin Bacon voiced an outcast cocky when with friends, shy when with a pretty girl, and serious when others need his help. Balto 2/3: Maurice LaMarche voiced a wolfdog more often than not accepted by the world, therefore matured and humbled and - very particularly in Wings of Change - becomes a wiser sage more-so than a hero, someone that many other characters come to for help.
To make a really sincere choice here I would have to see Kevin Bacon voice Balto in a 4th film. As of now it's really not fair that he's in one and Maurice LaMarche had the opportunity to voice two different Baltos, both in the transitional phase between hero and sage where he got to see some action still (Wolf Quest) and in the stage itself where he is less serious and more comedic (Wings of Change).
We see LaMarche as two different characters rather than Bacon's one Balto. And it's strange to say but I like these Baltos a little better since, as others have pointed out, they're flawed. Therefore I really must say LaMarche.

You know it doesn't really help when the people who like Bacon better just kinda state that and don't really give an in-depth reason as to why.
Since everyone here is particularly fond of over-thinking kid's movies already, you'd think there'd be some more intelligent responses.

Kevin Bacon, originals are always the best.
There's no rule against it, and a lot of the members here are teens or kids. They don't have to go in-depth if they don't want to (and I don't see a issue with any of the responses others have given, no need to break it down into bits. If they want to, that's fine too). As long as they don't just post a on-worded post, it's all good.

Fine. It just makes my answer look more credible.
And the original is not always the best.

Not to go off topic, by why does that matter if your post is better than ever body ele's? That's kinda mean. It isn't a matter of whos post is best, people are just posting their opinion.

Going off of your subject, why do you always have to belittle everyone's responses and generalize things?

Compared to Maurice Lemarche, Kevin Bacon makes a great Balto. Lemarche is a great voice actor in his own right, but his roles in the Balto films sounded like poor imitations of Bacon's role.

I think he did a great job of creating an older-sounding version of Bacon's voice. Listened side-by-side, it is an effective piece of work. Bacon's delivery, by and large, was dry, often lacking in any emotive energy (which reminds me of Kevin Costner's deadpan, emotionless delivery when he is "acting"). But then, he was the first one to portray Balto...so of course everyone will engage in the usual practice of unfairly comparing the successor to the originator. Which is patently silly. They both stand apart as their own interpretations (even with the similarities La Marche actually did put into his portrayal). Using the original actor (or actress, in other cases) as a barometer to rate the performance of another actor (or actress) succeeding to that role is a very poor way for anyone to analyze these kinds of things.

I agree. It's really dumb that people will pick Bacon simply because he did the role first, and also when he didn't even do that great a job.
