Liera worked on the assumption that Malk had heard Coby too, and gestured for him to follow. She swam against the current, moving towards the cops. Once she deemed it was close enough, she surfaced noisily, drawing in a gasping breath to add to the splash. That should be enough to get their attention.

Malk followed suit, smiling cruelly with his razor-sharp double row of teeth to freak out the cops.

Coby heard the splashing and gasping of Malk and Liera in the direction of the river, so he assumed they got his message. Tell me when it's clear to go. he asked Mara.

Georgia spotted the aquatic kids in her peripheral vision, but continued flashing the light into the trees so not to tip them off. "Sanders." she whispered harshly, "Don't say anything, but-"

"OH MY GOSH! THERE THEY ARE!" shouted Sanders, dashing over to the riverbank like he was Chuck Norris. "Georgia!" he shrieked, pointing straight at Malk and Liera, "I found 'em!"

Georgia felt like facepalming and growling to herself, but she possessed no choice but to flick her light off and bark commands. "All lightweight cadets, into the water!" She shot a steely glare at Sanders; because of him, she could lose her targets!

Liera couldn't help but laugh. They actually thought they could catch her! They didn't stand a chance when she was in the water. She dove back under and surfaced up a couple of feet away, trying to hide her grin.

As some lightweight troops lunged into the water, Malk simply stayed where he was, knowing full well that he could swim miles in minutes on command. He continued giving evil smiles to the troops, then he abruptly dropped underwater and surged away, going deeper and deeper into the abyss.

Coby heard splashing, then wondered if everyone was distracted my Malk and Liera so him and Mara could get away. Mara. he thought, Are they all distracted?

Most of them, she said. The really fat one and a few others stayed.

Crap. Coby thought. Suddenly, he got an idea. He slowly reached for a coin he had in his pocket, then flicked it over in another direction, hoping to draw them over there.

"Somethin' moved over there," Fred grunted, pointing out the location with a large finger.

Coby picked up the short sentence said by the officer and took the opportunity. He rocketed himself into the air and launched towards Mara's tree. Sorry in advance. he thought as he blazed towards her, grabbing her in his arms and disappearing into the woods. He held his grip on her as he dodged trees, then slowed down and landed her gently on the ground. He landed beside her. Sorry. he thought. It would have taken too long to explain, and with their attention spans they'd be on to the next thing by now.

Her arms were aching were Coby had grabbed them, but there was no real harm done. It's alright, Mara thought back, rubbing her sore shoulders.

Well now that we lost them for now, we gotta go back and find the others. Coby thought back to her.

Mara nodded. And if the cops are still there...I can always claw them. She smiled.

Coby rolled his eyes. You do that. he joked, hoping she wasn't seriously considering genocide. You good with running and climbing on your own? 'Cause I can't tell where Malk and Liera are if they're underwater.

Mara nodded. I can find 'em if your sonar can't, she added.

Alright. answered Coby one final time before unfolding his wide, dark, webbed wings and with one flap launched himself in the air, making sure he was high enough to stay out of eyeshot by the cops but also close enough so Mara could still hear his mind impulses. His black hair pinned back by the wind, he told Mara, Let's just hope the FBI doesn't have any mutants of their own.

That certainly wouldn't end well, Mara thought to herself as she followed Coby. She couldn't fly of course, but her eyes picked him out easily, and she kept up by running.
