Shadow leaned back and mumbled, "...Maria..." but could say nothing more. She was stricken with a disease that prevented her from breathing Earth's air, so they brought her to the ARK which is where Shadow was created. When the government found out Shadow was being held there, they killed her brutally. Shadow then took in a deep breath and explained just that. When he was finished, he looked down at his feet, expressionless.

"Shadow has had a lot of demons to fight over his life." said Sonic. "For one, for awhile he had no memory, even of that." he said. "Until this alien named Black Doom came to Earth and tried to take over but thanks to Shadow, he lost and Shadow got his memory back. Black Doom was actuelly part of how Shadow was made but when his creator had a change of heart, he reprogrammed Shadow to be the Earth's last line of defense against Doom."

Mirai nodded. "I understand why you'd have such pain, Shadow." he said. "It is part of my species training to learn to sympathize with the races we're commanded to protect, to understand their pains and their cultures." he said. "But I do not think that it was your fault, from the sound of thing this Black Doom is to blaim." he said. "But something being on other worlds has taught me is every being, no matter what their past, has a future, and that future can be as bright or dark as they wish."

Yapool watched videos of events that had happened in the past. "This Shadow has had many negative happening in his life." he said. "Perhaps we can exploit that, do you agree Eggman?"

"I can agree with that." Shadow answered to Mirai. He turned tail to work with Sonic and his team, even though his specialty was destruction.

"I've tried." Eggman replied. "But perhaps our joined forces can cause him to crack. We just need to make sure his 'buddies' don't get in the way."

Mirai nodded. "In the midst of one of the most destructive attacks on the Earth on my world, the sun was covered in rocks, its light blocked out, an alien, so powerful he'd once conquered even my world was destroying everything that stood before him, he even destroyed me." he said. "But I managed to reach back and fuse with my human friends and my partner, Ultraman Hikari, and became strong enough to destroy that alien, saving Earth."

"I think what he means is, even in the worst possible times, there's always a way good can win over evil." said Sonic.

"I didn't mean make him crack, trust me that never works." said Yapool. "I meant reach into that can of worms of a past of his and recreate something to benefet us."

Sally beamed. "That's worked many times for us! Right Sonic?"

"Then I know just the thing!" Eggman blurted. "He's still healing from the scars left from Maria, his only friend who had been murdered by the G.U.N. That's the thing that led him to be evil in the first place. He wanted to avenge her, so he set out to destroy mankind whom had destroyed her. What do you think?"

Sonic nodded. "The darker the times, the harder we fight." said Sonic, smiling. "That's how heroes do things."

"That is a good philosphy." said Mirai, smiling.

"I see the idea, but which do we utilize? The group who killed her or the girl?" asked Yapool. "I love munpulating human's emotions."

"Here we are!" informed Tails to the group. "Knothole is directly below us!" he said, lowering the craft.

Eggman twiddled his thumbs and thought. "Is it possible to create both? That way he can relive the incident, and... we can make her say anything we want?"

"Since I was one of the first to live here, I'll do it." volunteered Sally. She stepped out of the plane and motioned for Mirai to follow. She passed by a dry pit. "This used to be the Lake of Rings." she reported. "t used to be able to spit Power Rings, but Eggman's army invaded and he dried it up so we could no longer use it." She walked over to a small village with straw huts. "And this is where we all sleep if we must stay overnight. This whole base is invisible from radar because of a device invented by our friend Rotor, so it is hidden from society and is very top secret."

"She is very innocent, but she'll do anything if we convince her it's for Shadow's own good." said Eggman.

"What exactly was this lake of Rings?" asked Mirai, curious. "And I'm intrested by this cloaking shield, sounds intrigueing."

"The Lake of Rings started out as just a lake. But when Sonic's uncle discovered this mineral, so he called it a Power Stone and he invented Rings from it, and they could only be used for Sonic or for electricity purposes. They popped out of the water every 12 hours, I believe, and were very precious to the community." said Sally.

"As for the cloaking shield!" interrupted Espio. "That was the Chaotix's idea! Eggman had invaded -or tried to- many times, so just recently it was requested by our team and Rotr built it. And it still works perfectly."

"Intresting, both are." said Mirai. "I have yet to see such an effective long term cloaking shield." said Mirai. "I'm impressed." he said. "I'm very sorry Eggman drained your resource, it sounds cruel to do something like that." he said. "So what about this base, you constructed it?"

"Eggman, the reason I ask about her pureity is the copy shares the personality, if she's truely pure of heart, then that would mean I could not control her." said Yapool.

"Well," confessed Sally, "It was built after Robotropolis was taken over. We needed a place to hide and plan to overthrow Robotnik, or Eggman, without being captured. So the Royal family arranged for this to be built, but sadly, my father and brother were trapped in another dimension in the process. So I took over, and Sonic and his friends came along to help, along with my friends Antoine and Bunnie. Antoine was actually a Royal Guard as well."

"Then perhaps the soldiers." snapped Eggman. "They surely would destroy Shadow from the inside out, phsycologically speaking, and he will be willing to betray his team once he is turned."

Mirai nodded. "I see, you're universe is complicated." he said. "But all ones are." he said. "Is this base as high tech as everything else of yours I've seen so far?"

"Now doctor, be more creative, just because you can't control something completely doesn't mean you can't munpluate it." said Yapool. "We could make her be unable to remember anything after we resurrected her."

"Not quite." Sally admitted. "This was among the first bases built by us, so we didn't have much technology to begin with. We have, however, added many thing to improve security, like that cloaking shield."

"Really..." Eggman said, interested greatly. "Will this actually be her, or simply a copy?"
