Yes myspace is chock full of stolen and altered artwork and sadly most who have taken it have given no credit to the artist.

And another this is why would we take the copywrites off of our art after permission is given? So they can claim it as their own? PSH I do not think so. Myspace is bull and it should be closed.

BaltoSeppala wrote: SIGH. Oh well. I see I'm not making too much headway here. Fine. Those of you artists who wish to go at loggerheads with the dishonest and uncooperative of the MySpacers, go. You're each made for each other. I'm tired of trying to help. For those here who have understood what I was trying to do (even if you didn't think it had much of a chance), I appreciate it. There ARE MySpacers who also want benevolent interaction with the artists, and to do the right thing. There are, however, some idiots here who have unfairly characterized them, and that is a real shame (and I'm sick of engaging in useless debate with said idiots, because it resolves NOTHING. It only prolongs the problem, and wastes bandwidth ). It ruins any chance of resolution and fostering of good and cooperative relations. There are certain things I feel which MUST be done to resolve these things. However, since I am not getting across to some of the more stubborn and infantile of people here, and on MySpace (who seem to be looking for a fight, and want unrest and hate to persist), I am going to post these, and then I'm going to leave this thread behind... 1. The e-mail addresses of the artists should be posted on their main gallery pages here. A shout box message board, I think, is not enough. Because the artist has to come back here in order to see it, and then cycle through it. E-mail is better, and more direct. It WILL make it easier for people to contact each artist for permission to use their work. 2. Artists probably SHOULD put watermarks on their works (as some have). I think it's fair to ask for a copy without the watermark once permission has been secured. This is what professional photographers and artists do when their work is purchased from their websites. I also think it's fair of the artist to have certain disclaimers and copyright statements that the "borrower" should agree to, at the risk of facing possible litigation if those conditions are not followed (which would be up to the artist to try and pursue if he or she was that upset over any eventual alteration of their work). If necessary, you can ask Steet to put in an agreement button which must be clicked before the art can be used (or perhaps even viewed). Sure, this would take some programming work, but it would be worth the trouble. 3. Artists NEED to stop trolling around on MySpace (and wherever else they may be) looking for people who MIGHT be using their work without permission, if the intent is to confront those people and stimulate conflict. And MySpacers (and others) who use the art without permission NEED to respect the rights of the artists, and their concerns. Good freaking luck, people.
i'm sorry if i have insulted you in any way, i do understand that there are responsible myspacers out there. but there's a heckuva lot more bad ones. we all appreciate you bringing the stolen artwork problem to our attention, but i'm still sick of myspace, and i have some personal reasons for being very angry at it. no good can come out of myspace.
oh, yes, and even if an artist gives permission for someone to use their pic and remove the watermark/transparency, this is a rather dumb thing to do, as someone else could just steal the unwatermarked copy then.
and i wholeheartedly agree with Drew, myspace should be closed!

So...today I learned that some members of Balto Source are now engaging in the practice of not only trolling around MySpace, looking for people using artwork from here (as has already been discussed in this thread), but now they're laying threats that MySpacers will be banned from Balto Source if they don't remove images from their pages.
How this pettiness shames the messages contained in the cartoons...and the legacy of the real dogs and people involved in the Great Serum Run of 1925. That some people here cannot find a better and more sophisticated way of resolving such problems, without resorting to threats, is just shameful. It's purile, and it's cowardly. And I don't care WHO started it.

Incidentally, for those of you who discussed copyrights...technically, in the U.S., the copyright law implies (or it may actually state, I am not certain) that ANYTHING you create, which is original, is already copyrighted. You no longer need apply for it. And have legal grounds to protect it...within the boundaries of the U.S. Outside, that may well be another matter. Despite appearances, a U.S. court has no jurisdiction over someone from another country unless that country allows it.
That protection ends, however, even when those of you who are artists draw previously copyrighted characters (any of the official characters from the three Balto cartoons). And you have no legal claim for recompense or prosecution (or protection) over artwork you created which contains an image you don't own the rights to.
I state again, as I did earlier, that we are ALL very fortunate that Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are not anything like George Lucas or Paramount Pictures in their pursuit of fans who use their images (or create their own material using copyrighted images)...or their use of their money and legal resources to enforce compliance. VERY fortunate.

I don't seem to recall you being the owner of Balto Source, Drew. I am a member here, too. And I won't be bullied off because I am pointing out some facts. I may only have been on these forums a very short time, but I have been visiting Balto Source for a long time. You don't make the rules, so my answer to you is no.
Does that response of yours imply something?

Alright I’m going to say a few things here seeing as I can and feel that they should be pointed out more specificaly to BaltoSeppala I don’t think you know exactly what it takes to produce some of the artwork you see here on Balto Source, hours and hours of work, and keep in mind that these artists are producing this artwork for you’re viewing pleasure completely FREE. After working so hard on it I’d want to be sure that it wasn’t used without my permission no doubt about it and yeah I’d be really really pissed off if I found out it was in fact stolen by some freaks on MySpace. Granted I think artist should use watermarks and copyrights and hell if they want to spend their time checking the internet to see if their art has in fact been used without permission then by all means they have every right to do so. And when they do find someone using their art without asking they have every right on Gods green earth to demand that the user take it down reguardless. Which leads me to ask WHY DO YOU CARE WHAT THEY DO ON THEIR OWN TIME CONCERNING THEIR ART???? I don’t care what the reason is art theft of any kind is WRONG. I don’t care if the person drew Balto, or any other character, the CHARACTER is copyrighted by the company NOT the drawing. Drew is right, you’re in fact trying to defend these art stealing freaks, you know for someone that touts copyright info you sure don’t seem like you can make up your mind about it. Bottom line is that it’s WRONG.
There MY opinion. W00T

Quote: i dont know if they are really stealing it could be that the artist has an account and u dont know it?..possibility..I dont know) anyway plz elaborate and clarify a bit plz..
First off, none of these artists (that we know of) have any MySpace accounts. I should know cuz they're mostly stealing from me and Pample. I hate MySpace and Pample would SURELY NEVER submit her stuff like these guys do: messy.
And second off, the topic can be read further up the pages.

Mmm. That's a misquote. I never said I supported art theft. Why would I rail on here that I am sympathetic to artists if I supported art theft? I SAID that any of YOU (or anyone else) who produces artwork of a copyrighted image, owned by an entity such as Univeral Pictures/Amblin Entertainment IS committing copyright violation, and technically is also a THIEF. (Yes, to you too, Lakoswolf...making an image of a copyrighted property IS a violation of that copyright. Deal).
Hmm. You didn't ask me to leave? Did I misread the statement "Go back to MySpace"?
