JerseyCaptain wrote: Then you're being rather paranoid. No one has named specific moderators. And while I DO happen to have thoughts on some who need to either voluntarily resign or be involuntarily removed, most I think are simply overworked or over-tasked. Neither I nor anyone else has denied that fact.
I've already provided the same kinds of potential solutions to this problem that other members have. And I still think it's an overreaction. I have nothing against Roi. In fact, I tend to think that, though she comes on a bit strong in some of her "now drop it" posts on the forum, she IS otherwise an active moderator who is very visually active...in a way that can be SEEN by the members.
I think it's pretty apparent, if one takes even a casual look around the rant board as well as in various places on the sources, that most of the blame for the problems we have been having over site management fall most strongly (and appropriately) onto steet's shoulders, not those of the mods. Stop being melodramatic about it. Yes, the mods do get some share of the blame from members in general. But you have to come to terms with the fact that you, as moderators, are the front line of the management of this site. The ones the members interact with (and deal with in some cases, quite frankly) regularly...or at least occasionally. Not steet. Steet doesn't come around except very rarely. He's already broken the promise he made sure was posted on all the shoutboxes of the English side of this site, that he'd be available to address member concerns and questions at a certain time on certain days. Which is obviously moot now, as he doesn't do it.
Yes, Hecate especially has been very proactive in TRYING to help us all here on the English side, and she hasn't been given the credit she really deserves for all of that. She takes the time to come here and TRY. So does Nakou. Hell, these two ought to be considered for co-admin positions for those reasons alone, were they willing to undertake such Herculean tasks. I am pretty certain that, unlike MANY co-admins of the past on this side (and I won't name names, but I absolutely know whom I refer to), they have never played petty politics and games with the members, or turned into vicious little trolls who have since made misery for this site.
But back to steet: whenever he DOES see these repeated and mounting frustrations and complaints, instead of taking proactive steps to try and foster a situation which will ALLEVIATE the stress he faces, he instead (and perhaps unintentionally) ADDS to it by withdrawing further from the problem and bawwing about how nobody understands all the work he's put into it, how difficult managing and organizing this site is, and how no one appreciates it, and how everyone on the English side is always complaining...that all of his problems stem from THIS SIDE. Most of that is actually his fault. Solely. Because he backs himself into a corner and becomes defensive and hostile over all of this. People originally weren't so bitter about this, but his poor handling of these mounting situations MADE it what it is currently. Nothing else.
He could easily decide, as owner of this site, on a small stable of people who could be co-administrators, who would have the authority to deal with these things, with more authority than moderators. The way it used to be (though he NEEDS to be accessible should one or more of those administrators start faltering in their jobs, or start doing contradictory, egocentric or downright boneheaded things, so that he can consider their removal if the situations warrant. He NEEDS to do that!). Steet needs to change MUCH of his attitude, and just get over here and deal with this stuff. He needs to devote some time to it, and then develop a plan for fixing it. Too many people have already e-mailed and/or PMed him with suggestions, advice and offers of help. He either totally ignores them, or blows those contacts off as either unreliable suggestions (when many of them actually are totally reliable) or things he doesn't want to do. But if not those, he needs to DO...SOMETHING.
I never said anyone named specific mods. Though as you said, people want a majority of us to resign. Which, won't happen. There is to much going on, despite the fact they might not be the biggest helpers, as long as they help. Until Steet adds more mods, though I don't think this will solve the problem, anyone who quits, will just hurt us. Steet has become a less active part to this site. After the troll attacks, he seems troubled on who to trust it seems. Adding a co-webmsater/administrator will either be a very good thing, or a very bad thing. Another factor is who he will choose, they almost must be a current mod. If someone is chosen and users don't approve. Another problem right there, complaints will be given to remove the administrator. It will be just like mods, everyone will agree and love our co-webmaster, then hate them in less then a year and want another one or get him a replacement. Don't get me wrong, I am for having an administrator, but it might just more problems to the one at hand. Also, this goes for everyone reading this message, I am not against you. I am simply getting frustrated. Please understand we are trying everything we can to help you and this site.

Its tough, something that might be hard to do but would be appreciated, is if one thing is reported, for them to say "reported" so that we don't get 5 reports on the same thing. Also, Batman, did you have a previous username/account. You seem familiar.

The Batman wrote: Maybe there is something non mods could do to help the mods? Not make our jobs harder by having to deal with constant complaints from members? Like what Moss said, it won't matter who gets added or replaced on here(mods/admins). People always have and always will eventually find something(s) to dislike about the leadership. And anyone here that thinks that if they became a mod, that things wouldn't be like that again is incredibly naive. As for more mods and help, some of us did talk about members that we would like to help us on here, and did send Steet a message asking him what he thinks of adding them. Also, it isn't so easy to tell when a mod has been lazy since some of what we do can't always be seen such as activating or de-activating things on the sources, closing reports, etc. I have no idea what mods are lazy since they all seem to be doing their work to me, so instead of being lazy, they might just not have their efforts being noticed as much as other mods because of the times they're on or the type of work they often do on here.

I haven't seen members forcing mods to heed their complaints...I've just seen this rant and comments on the shoutbox, so I don't really understand your post.

Because these rants make it seem like anything we do is never enough for people here. Yes, there will always be complainers, I knew that before becoming a mod. I'm not asking for praise or anything, just more understanding and less "suggestions" that are more like rants(I know it's the rant board, but still). And it's even worse when former mods do this, since you would think that they would have a better idea of what we're trying to do.

Well that's not really making you "deal" with it. You're overexageration makes it seem that they are pinning you down and yelling at you. You're on the rant boards on your own will, and well, sadly your efforts aren't enough. It's not your fault, more likely the web master's. People really don't care how the job gets done, just that it does. As I showed in my fabulous graph above, it's really difficult for the staff to meet the expectations. Therefor, the job cannot get done. So then there is a problem, which is not done, then there are complaints. (My point is that the complaints are deserved, however it's not your fault)

Moss wrote: Though as you said, people want a majority of us to resign. Which, won't happen. I never actually said "people want a majority of the mods to resign". A more accurate example of what I actually said would include what was sub-quoted above.
Moss wrote: Steet has become a less active part to this site. After the troll attacks, he seems troubled on who to trust it seems. Steet has never actually given must trust at all to anyone...nor much faith. One of the very few people he did trust turned into one of the biggest naysayers and trolls to ever trouble this site (and I am not talking about NYBF). And that person was not only one of the very first members of this site, but a very high-ranking one eventually. And he did a great deal of damage in very subtle ways. And even upon his "departure", people STILL were praising him, because no one was ever allowed to see the damage he actually had done when it was finally uncovered. He did more to unravel the common trust and good faith people had in each other, on this site, and to set more people against each other, than practically anyone else who has ever visited or joined this place. Moss wrote: Adding a co-webmsater/administrator will either be a very good thing, or a very bad thing. Another factor is who he will choose, they almost must be a current mod. It will be just like mods, everyone will agree and love our co-webmaster, then hate them in less then a year and want another one or get him a replacement. First of all, it wouldn't need to be a current mod. I submit that it is probably better were it a person who was NEVER a staff member (my support of Hecate and Nakou, stated earlier, notwithstanding). As to the latter half of this quote? It's never a zero-sum game. And no one will ever be entirely happy. A good part of the trouble on this site comes FROM trying to make EVERYONE happy, and trying to force people to keep their mouths shut when they have conflicts which need resolving. But not every staff member deserves their positions, and not every staff member remains a positive and productive contributor. That much is a painfully-proven fact on THIS site. But there are ways to engage in conflict resolution. Unfortunately, no one on this site practices them...or they practice them with piss-poor incompetence. OR they simply tell people to "knock it off, move on and be nice". Such stupid "advice" solves nothing. And bellowing out orders to people only makes them angry. None of you are sergeants or corporate executives. You're there to help. And to resolve conflicts...not create more with harsh answers and "do this or else" tactics (and let's not pretend this doesn't happen. Because it DOES).
Wingrunner wrote: The Batman wrote: Maybe there is something non mods could do to help the mods? Not make our jobs harder by having to deal with constant complaints from members? As I have already said, most members feel that is their only remaining tool to get some action or resolution. It shouldn't ever have to come to that point. But you know what? It does. Because that is the only thing which generates a reaction around here. Certainly honest but unanswered PMs and e-mails to steet or requests to help from members to mods don't...some (NOT ALL) of which end up being answered either weeks after the fact, or answered with what amounts to a shrug.
