"WHOA!" screamed Coby when Mara put the pedal to the metal. His senses went burzurke and the papers flew out the window, as did his sanity at the moment. Mara, stop! he commanded through minds. What are you doing?! They couldn't run from the police, could they? In TV shows and movies they've watched, the cops always pursued the runner until they were caught... or worse.
Malk was swept over the backseat and into the anterior wall of the vehicle at the sudden lurch, landing behind the seat. He regained his stature and poked his head from behind his seat, only to be knocked over again by sudden swerves and speed changes. He managed to land a glance out the back window, and the police officers were hot on their heels, Georgia looking determined (and even a bit entertained) and the stumpy cop frazzled. "They're gaining on us!" he yelled.

We don't have much of a choice! Mara replied, struggling fiercely with the steering wheel. They were suspicious enough, and we can't outrun a car! The small needle showed they were almost going 100 mph, and the trees on the side of the road zoomed by, blurring together.
"We'll have to pull over near some water or something," Liera said, clutching her stomach as nausea rose. "The forest looks like it goes on for a while; you and Coby can hide in the trees. Malk and I can swim." Electricity crackled around her fingertips in her excitement, making her hair stick up somewhat.

"That's a good idea." Coby agreed to Liera's proposal. He could fly to safety and Mara could climb trees better than a squirrel, and Malk and Liera could swim faster than German U-Boats. Mara, pull over, he told her, We'll be safe if we escape using our abilities.

The tires squealed as she screeched to an abrupt halt, jerking in her seat. Mara unbuckled the seatbelt, and hurriedly slid out of the car. We should meet up near that bend in the creek once they leave, she said to Coby, struggling to send him the mental image of it. It was extremely hard to make out with normal eyes, but her enhanced eyesight could make it out clearly, despite the distance and the trees.
Liera slid out of the car, her legs shaky now that she was on solid, unmoving land. "Hurry up, Malk!" she called.

Malk had been having a hard time getting the door open, so he finally just punched through the window and opened it from the outside. He leapt out and dashed toward the water, calling back, "Liera!"
Coby swiftly slipped out the door, unfolding his massive, dark gray, webbed wings. His sonar was set now, locking on to his surroundings now that he was outside and out of the car. He felt the presence of bony branches above him, and so he beat his wings to propel himself into the air without hesitation. Got it. he answered to Mara, then sent to everyone else, Meet by the riverbend after the coast is clear.

Liera nodded, then raced towards Malk and the water. She dove in neatly, automatically transitioning from breathing air to breathing water. She dove under, swimming swiftly upstream.
Mara fled further into the forest, and scaled a tree with no hesitation. Hidden beneath its thick foilage, she was practically hidden. She balanced neatly on the branch, pulling her tail out and using it for balance. Without it, it was a lot harder to climb trees.

Malk dove in after Liera, and while it was not as clean a dive, the water rushed through his gills and gave him that exhilarating feeling, like his own personal high. While he couldn't swim as quick with shoes on, he still reached close to his top speeds as he tried hard to submerge himself in the depths until he received word from Coby.
Coby jumped higher and higher from tree branch to tree branch, using his wings to lift him into a five-foot jump. He didn't have to look back to sense cop cars below, but his sonar began to get fuzzy when he climbed too high in the leafy foliage. He decided to remain in the branch he was perched on as to keep watch on what was happening below. The cop cars stuck out to him because of the small hill protruding from the top, since he couldn't literally "see" or see colors or deigns, only the general shapes of things.
Georgia had called for backup, and within three minutes, two more police cars followed close behind hers. Sanders' face was permanently flushed red from the shock, but Georgia was locked onto her target, until she pulled up behind the abandoned car. She leapt out of hers, hand laid across her holster in case of emergency. She aproached the car, taking note that they had disappeared. Georgia pulled out her communicator. "I need at least six squads searching the area nearby and surrounding Pear Grove Road, stat."

Mara settled into a more comfortable position, leaning against the trunk. Her keen eyes could pick out the shape of the police cars, and the tiny figures of the police officers. Her tail flicked in satisfaction; they had gotten away this time.
Liera wished she wasn't wearing her normal outfit; the clothes weighed her down, and made it difficult to swim. Her swimsuit was better suited to the water. She managed to keep up the fast pace, however, making quick progress through the water.

Malk regulated his underwater breathing, letting himself rest in mid-stride, as if it were a cocoon around him. The sounds of the cars muffled, but he could hear the frantic voices outside.
Sanders wiped some sweat off his brow as Georgia looked for hints of the kids' departure. "Georgia..." "What?" "D'you think they're... magic?" Georgia rolled her eyes. "Rookie." she whispered to herself. "Sanders, go look for something and try to make yourself useful." Sanders fixed his badge, offended, but did begin looking up in the trees.
Coby tried his best to breathe inwardly and quietly as possible, and also not move. He kept himself steady by placing one hand on the trunk and one on the branch base as he looked straight ahead, trying to catch up on what was happening below. When the shorter, stockier cop, Sanders, began looking up into the trees, Coby froze. He hadn't yet taken off the reading glasses he had mistook as sunglasses, and they were slipping off. If he moved, he would be caught for sure, but if he didn't, the glasses would-
Glass broke behind Sanders, and he pivoted around to see a pair of glasses. They seemed familiar, and that's when he recognized them. "Guys!" he shouted to the backup. "I found something! Georgia!"

A rather overweight cop, Fred, waddled over. "What is it?" he asked, a small hint of exasperation in his voice. Sanders wasn't exactly known for being the best on the job.
Mara caught the main jist of the conversation, though she was fairly far away. Liera and Malk were safely in the water, and Coby was the closest. She struggled to reach his thoughts, unable to tell is she was successful, being no telepath herself. Coby? What happened?

Coby clenched his jaw and winced as the glasses crashed against the hard ground. Oh no... he thought. I think I just killed us.
Sanders picked up the glasses, now missing one lens. "These were worn by one of them." he informed Fred. "They, like, fell from the sky or somethin'."
Georgia briskly walked over and looked over Fred's shoulder. "Where did you say those came from, Sanders?"
"The sky?"
She set her jaw, then walked purposefully away, looking up into the trees above where the glasses fell. She took out her flashlight, which always stayed clipped faithfully on her utility belt, and flashed it around the branches, hoping to find something.
Mara, Coby thought to her, Whatever you do, don't move.

Mara froze, then remembered her tail. Crap! It was out in plain sight, hidden only by a few leaves. If she moved it, she would be caught for sure, but if they saw it...
Kids these days, Fred thought as his tiny eyes scanned the tree tops. Reckless driving, drinking, gang fights. And now they're hiding in trees. What next?

Sanders watched like a wide-eyed toddler as Georgia flashed her light up into the branches, hoping to catch sight of something. A twitch. A blink. A sigh. Something.
Coby tried his hardest to keep his breathing steady and quiet, since the officers began to silence below them. Mara. he thought to her, feeling trapped and outnumbered, We need to get out of here somehow. Shoul I ask Liera and Malk to distract them or something?

Yeah, Mara thought, relief edging her mental voice. Liera and Malk could swim faster than any human could run, and it would help both her and Coby.

Alright, Coby thought, then sent an urgent message to Malk and Liera. Guys, we need a distraction. We're in some sort of a pickle...
A voice tapped at the edge of Malk's mind as he floated submerged in the water. He wondered if Liera could hear it too.
