Griffin's faint smile broke into a full out one as Rose stared into his eyes. In that one moment, he felt as if he were human again. Really, truly human. His whole past faded away and his need for blood was lost to the wind. He wanted to stay forever locked in that position, forever feeling human again. Just as Rose let go, he held her hand in his before she pulled away to put her arms against her shoulders. "Rose, I don't know how else to say this than to make it sound cheesy, but," Griffin said, "just now? You made me feel... human again..." The tips of his smile were suddenly cut, but it was still noticable.

All his senses came flooding back to him, though, when Hayley began to burn Rose's jacket and the rest of her clothes that were stained with crimson liquid. Griffin was suddenly torn between going over to the fire and licking every ounce of blood left on it, and backing away from it for fear he may get burned. Fire was one of the rare things that vampires and werewolves shared in common. It was one of the few, few things that could get them both killed. Eventually, though, he decided to back away. Smart move.

The fire flared in a small circle. Hayley made sure it went no where else except in that circle. As Griffin stepped back a few feet, though, he noticed that Rose was almost hugging herself. She wasn't shivering so she couldn't have been cold... Was she nervous about wearing a tank top in front of so many people? He wanted to go closer to her and ask, but he was torn again. After about 2 minutes of mulling it over, flicking his gaze from the fire to the ground he stood on, he made a few hesitant footsteps toward the girl who's name he didn't know not too long ago.

The day turned to night as he talked to her. The twilight sky was getting darker, making sure that any ounce of sunlight left was being smudged out of the picture. "Rose, are you alright?" He asked, in regards to her arm position. "Do you want another jacket?" He asked quietly, so that the others really had to pay attention if they wanted to be able to hear.

Jamie just backed up from the fire, not really paying much attention to anything else. She wondered faintly when they were going to get a move on. If they didn't get out soon, the Council would most likely find them. After all, when you have six supernatural creatures all in one hot-spot in the woods? It doesn't exactly equal camoflauge.

Meanwhile, Devin and Cale weren't too close to the fire, so Devin didn't back away as much as the vampires did. "Oh, I get it. Sorry man." He didn't exactly know all the details to Cale's past, or his life in the pack he used to belong to, but something told him that many before had drilled it into his head that vampires were no good. Either that or something had happened having to do with them. Something that was too awful to get over or even think about. Devin decided to keep quiet, not really wanting to push his best friend to think or talk about things he didn't really want to be reminded of. Instead, he tapped his foot lightly, watching the others as the fire began to die down.

When Griffin told Rose that she made him feel human again, she smiled even wider up at him. "That doesn't sound cheesy," she said with a shake of her head. "That sounds honest." She really didn't want to pul away from him, but noticed Griffin becoming a little distracted by the fire. She remembered that fire was one of the few things that could kill a vampire, so she realized that Griffin was probably a tad afraid of it. She had to let go of his hand so they could back away from the small fire.

Rose's eyes drifted towards the flames, though, watching the clothing slowly burn away. She hoped that that smell of blood was gone now, even though she had no way of knowing for sure. The smell of the smok was dominating her senses, though, so she hoped that meant the tormenting scent of blood was gone from the air. She was beginning to know how awful that temptation was for people like Griffin and Jamie. Rose now knew how hard it was for them to resist.

Rose was snapped out of her thoughts when Griffin asked her if she would like another jacket. Rose had grown a little uncomfortable without an actual shirt on, but she had hoped that no one had noticed. Rose prayed that Griffin was only asking because he thought she might be cold, especailly as the sun began to set. Still, she wondered where Griffin thought he was going to get another jacket for her when she rememberd her bag, laying discarded a few feet from them. "Well, yes, but I think there should be another one is this pack," she said to him, as she went to the bag and sorted through it. She yanked out a dark gray turtle-neck sweater that was a little too warm for the weather, but it was the only other warm artical of clothing left in the bag. Rose slipped it on over her tank, glad for the extra layer now as the evening chill filled the air. Rose reached for the neck of sweater, finding that she had already cut the material down to her collar bone. Rose hated turtle-necks, so she was glad to not have to deal with that discomfort.

Haley gathered a few sticks, keeping the fire going after the cloth burned up. With the temperature dropping with the sun, Haley realized that it wouldn't be long before the warmth of the fire would be welcoming. It was also way passed time to eat a decent dinner, and Haley didn't think Rose would be fire up to the idea of rare rabbit. The fire would give them something to cook on.

Cale nodded at Devin, not really paying attention to what he had said. Cale hated to seem at all weak, and the memories flashing before his eyes brought him back to his worst night. He tried to push the images away, but it was too late. Lexi was already before his eyes, her green irises large and innocent, her short blond hair sticking out at add angles like they always did. She was so precious, so naive, so human. Then she was in his arms, taking her last breath while a young vampire with long red locks stood in the background, observing the couple like a movie. She lay unconscious, and Cale couldn't even look into her eyes one last time to say good-bye. A blood red river flowed from her neck in rythm with her pulse.

Cale though down the stripped stem, rubbing at his eyes to try and whip away from event from his memory. He glanced at Devin, slowly coming back out of his mind and returning to reality. Lexi died years ago, but the throbbing in Cale's chest felt just as painful as it had the night of the attack. He'd learned to live with the guilt of her death, knowing that it was all his fault. But keeping it unsaid with everyone he'd ever know, even his pack, had kept the emotions building for a long time. Cale swallowed it down, though, just like he always did when he even came close to talking about the event. "Nothing for you to be sorry about," he mutteredm finally returning to normal a bit. "Sh*t happen, right? It was nothing more than that. An unfortunate accident, a choice. I still don't know if I was right or wrong to do it." Of course, Devin probably had no idea what Cale meant, but Cale couldn't stop himself from rambling oddities that only had meaning if someone knew the whole story.

Griffin watched carefully as Rose dug through her bag to find a sweater. He tilted his head slightly when she brought it out. "Is that thing cut at the top?" He paused and laughed quietly. "Don't like turtlenecks, huh?" He asked, humor in his voice. He looked at her face and smiled. The fire had all but died down out of his senses. All that stood between him and anything else was Rose. "I guess it is honest." He said suddenly, remembering her comment from earlier. "It came from my..." he trailed off, unsure how to say the word. He hadn't really used it ever before unless he was saying he never had one. "H-" He looked at the ground quickly before grinning sheepishly. "My heart." His eyes found their way back to Rose's figure.

He turned back to the crackling suddenly returning to his ears and was tempted to step back a bit more, but eventually he decided Rose was more important than the threat of a fire that wasn't really a threat anymore. "Are you keeping it there to cook some food?" He asked noticing that Hayley hadn't killed the fire even though the clothes had been ashes for more than a few minutes already. The question was actually curious if you paid attention to the tone.

Meanwhile, Devin's eyes wandered to the fire as he tried to figure out an answer. What is he remembering that's too deep to tell me? He wondered. He had no idea how to respond. Then he decided what he could say and went with it. "Well, for some reason I felt like saying sorry. I guess I just didn't want to make you remember anything that was painful..." he trailed off. Just going by the few words he revealed about an accident, Devin presumed it was, he tried to comfort his best friend. "Well, if you felt it was best, then it was probably meant to be that way. I don't know what exactly happened, but whatever you chose was what was supposed to happen. I guess that sounds crazy, but... then again, us being the creatures we are is crazy enough." He tried to manage a smile, and the effort was visible, but none crossed his face.

Ooc:// Sorry I haven't responded in a long time. My first semester is finishing up, so I have mid-term tests all next week. I have been studying for those along with revising my English Portfolio. It has taken up ALL my time. After next week, I should be back to normal. But for now, I'll get in one more post before my tests.

BTW, when Tanya and Kendra come in, Cale will clarify his past more.

Bic:// Rose tugged the sleeves of the sweater down over her hands to keep her fingertips warm. She had grown a little chilled before she had put the turtle-neck on, but now she was quickly warming up because of the thick fabic and the heat radiating from the campfire. Rose shrugged at Griffin's teasing, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "No, not really. Having cotton fabric wrapped around my neck is not the most comforting feeling," she replied. Rose looked back at Griffin when he mentioned what she had said just a few minutes ago. Her smile spread from cheek to cheek as Griffin stuggled to say the words he wanted to say. Rose hadn't been taught that vampiies could feel emotions that come from the heart, and she now wondered if Griffin might have thought the same. She took a few steps to stand by his side again, and she placed her hand on her arm, looking up at his face. "Our hearts have a way of taking over how tongues when we speak," she said quietly.

She turned her head to watch Haley's fire as the werewolf continued poking at it to keep the flames going. Rose hadn't even thought about eating since she met Griffin, but not that he mentioned it, she could use some food.

Haley grinned up at Griffin and Rose. "Yep," she said brightly. "I figured you preferred your food cooked," she said teasingly to Rose. "I thought maybe we could catch something for you. I hope you're not a vegetarian."

Rose shook her head at Haley's comment, but not being a vegetarian still didn't make the idea of eating a rabbit or a squirrel very appetizing. "Actually, I think I'll be able to come up with my own diner tonight," she said, returning once again to her bag. There was only a sandwich and a plastic bag of some sort of trail mix. It wouldn't last long, but Rose decided that she would be able to deal with the wild food later. For tonight, she was not going to waste this food.

Cale nodded, looking off into the distant in a way that mad it seem he was not paying attention to Devin. But every word that his friend said sunk into Cale's mind. Was Devin saying sorry for causing Cale to remember Lexi? And if it was really for the best, Cale wouldn't feel so guilty. If Cale hadn't gotten involved with Lexi in the first place, perhaps she never would have come across a vampire at all. Cale lived in the crazy world of werewolves and vampires, and he brought Lexi in to it. "But she didn't have to be part of it," he finally said. Cale glanced over at Devin, and it finally hit him that Devin was only trying to comfort Cale. He sighed, realizing how much he sounded like a depressed jerk now. "But it's whatever now. No big deal," he said with a shrug.

Griffin smiled warmly at Rose. Maybe she was right. Their hearts had a way of mending themselves over their voices. It had a communication device that could overturn any original will. The vampire looked at the ground covered in grass, dirt, and dead leaves. He wondered faintly if he really did have a heart. Was he becoming human again? No, it wasn't possible. There was no way possible to ever become human again. And even if he were to turn back, there'd be no telling if he'd look like the amount of time he had actually lived or the age he was stuck forever in.

However, he knew it wasn't possible and eventually his thoughts came to sad implements. "Rose..."He whispered, though he had unconsciously said it. He didn't even realize he had spoken her name aloud. Was he doomed to have to let her go in the end? She was human. He was a vampire. He was stuck being the way he was for eternity unless someone staked him in the heart with a wooden edge. She could be killed so many ways, it hurt him to count. She'd age and keep aging until she died of being so elderly. He'd be doomed to kill uncontrollably from just the loss of her. It pained every inch of his body and... his soul? To even think about such things. "Can't lose you... Rose.. don't die..." He whispered, again without knowing. "No!" He quietly shouted.

Suddenly he snapped out of it when Haley finished talking. He still had no idea his thoughts had been somewhat let out.

Devin nodded hesitantly. "Alright, if you say so." His tone was the type that basically meant: If you need anything, just let me know. Or something along those lines at least. He wanted to let Cale know he wasn't alone, even if the werewolf wasn't exactly sure why Cale was acting like this in the first place. Devin knew when things were up with others, and for some reason never seemed to be phased by his 'brother's' jerkish behavior.

Rose turned at Griffin's shout. She went to him, standing in front of him and trying to look him in the face. "Is something wrong?" she asked him, concern painting her every feature. She reached out to grip his shoulder with her free hand, the other one still clutching the sandwhich and trail mix. She had heard him say her name, and she was scared that perhaps she had done something wrong.

Haley stood up from her crouched position when Griffin shouted, but she saw that Rose was already taking care of him. She smiled at the two of them before she remembered the two werewolves that were with them. She glanced around and found them talking a few feet off. She walked over to them and leaned against a tree that they were sitting by. "Is everything alright over here, boys?" she asked, her voice light but still serious.

Cale nodded at Devin, knowing the secrete meaning behind his words. "Thanks, man," he said with a smile before glancing up at Haley as she came over. "Yeah, everything's fine," he said with a growl in his voice as he stood up and brushed passed her.

Haley raised an eyebrow as Cale walked passed her rudely. "What's his problem?" she asked with a curl of her lip as she looked at Devin for the answer.

Griffin suddenly turned to look at Rose, completely broken up in thought. "Oh... uh yeah, I'm fine. Why, did I say something?" He then thought about what he had earlier and sighed, realizing he probably must have said something about it aloud. "It's just.. something sad. You may not want to think about it. Just my mind I suppose. I'm never able to block out all the bad stuff. I'm never able to just take the good. It's always the evil things that haunt me..." He had no idea what he was rambling on about, but for some reason it felt right to... what would it be like? Vent? He shook his head. "Sorry, I just-" He cut himself off, wondering how he should place his words so they didn't sound so selfish.

Devin winked but when Hayley came over, it seemed as though Cale began to act up again. Devin blinked his eyes once or twice before shrugging his shoulders. He turned his gaze to see the female werewolf. "He's just dealing with a few things. From what I don't really know, but I can guess it's painful."

Rose waited expectedly for Griffin to continue, but he soon stopped himself for talking. "You can talk to me," she said encouragingly, not wanting Griffin to hide anything from her. "Maybe I can help you focus on the good stuff." She didn't want Griffin to be constantly thinking about all the bad things in his life, since she figured there was probably a lot of it.

Haley rolled her eyes at that statement. "What makes his issues so much worse than mi-... I mean, ours," she said, trying not to seem self-centered, but not understanding why Cale had the right to be mompy when they all had been through a lot lately.

Cale settled himself on the ground near the campfire, warming up his fingers that weren't really all that cold. Now that the vampire and his human were off a few feet talking, Cale was able to concentrate on clearing his mind of Lexi. He had learned to shove her away from his mind for years, and all he had to do was take some time to do so.

Griffin looked around hesitantly, then gave a deep, longing sigh. "Alright. But... Please don't think I'm selfish. It's not that I..." He trailed off again, then looked up at the sky. "Ugh! How do I tell you without screwing everything up?" He put his hands on his head, ruffling up his hair a bit. He eventually took them down and sighed again. "I was wondering how I'll be able to be with you... forever." A tone of sadness hit his voice at the end. "And then I realized that I can't..."

Devin didn't know what to do really. "Well, I'm sure both of your sob stories are much worse than anything I've ever been through. I didn't go through much pain in my life except for when I got turned into a wolf." He gave a sort of grim smile, but tried to think of something else to say. He walked a bit past Hayley, putting his hands in his pockets and shrugged again. "I don't know, though. Most of my life people told me I never really look on the dark side. So maybe things have been pretty bad, but I've just made myself blind to the pain." His expression was out of Hayley's line of vision for his back was turned.

Rose glanced at her feet, trying to come up with something comforting to say. If what she knew about vampires was true, than the only way for the two of them to have any sort of relationship would be for Rose to become a vampire herself. Rose had to remind herself that she had just met Griffin and that she shouldn't be considering becoming like him. It was just irrational. But something inside Rose wanted her to tell him that she was willing to make that decision.

She stopped heself before she told him the thoughts that were running through her mind. "Maybe we should focus on living through the next couple of days before we think about forever," she suggested in a small, sweet voice.

Haley crossed her arms, not turning around to face Devin even though he also had his back to her. "Isn't that the way we all survive that?" she asked, thinking about how she always forced a smile on her face when she wanted to cry. "Perhaps you should teach your friend over there not to be so gloomy. Then he wouldn't be so depresed all the time." She finally turned around to face Devin, only to discover that he had his back to her. "And then he'd have more than just you as a friend," she said, still looking at the back of his head in case he turned around.

Cale glanced over his shoulder at Devin and Haley, who were just far enough away that he couldn't hear what they were talking about. He wasn't even sure if they were actually talking to each other since they had their backs to each others, but Devin's lips had moved and it seemed that he now was listening to something. He rolled his eyes, trying not to feel the little ache in his chest that came from being lonely and feeling left out of something.

Griffin nodded hesitantly. "Sounds good," he replied. He had nothing much else to say at the moment. Suddenly, though, he felt that burn in his throat. He would have hissed to himself as a replacement for a human curse, but he didn't want any of these werewolves, or even Rose, to know about it. The vampire knew this would come back to bite him no more than an hour or two from now, but he came up with a temporary story of what could happen had he let out the problem.

If he let Rose know, the werewolves were sure to hear. If the werewolves heard, they'd get into yet another fight. If they got into another fight, he would be done for. After all, these werewolves outnumbered him and Jamie 3 to 2. Not to mention Jamie was a newborn, so she wouldn't be much help in a fight like that. He decided to just rub a finger on his throat while no one was looking and swallow hard. Hopefully, that would keep anyone from noticing, or it would suppress the scratchy feeling for a while.

Devin turned to face Hayley while she spoke. "Sounds easy, doesn't it?" He paused to think on his words before continuing. "I'm not so sure he doesn't have reason to be the way he is. What if something awful happened to him that made him like that?" He waited another minute before saying his last sentence. "Ya know, some things just can't be forgotten or buried."

Rose glanced away from Griffin for a second as she nodded in agreement to what he had said. She was trying not to think too hard about the potential promise she had just made to him and how that promise hardly scared her at all. The future that could be hers should have caused fear inside her since becoming a vampire could not be a pleasant process. Still, she couldn't convince herself that it wouldn't be worth it. A small part of her brain shouted to her that she shouldn't even be considering giving up her life to be with Griffin, but her life wasn't much nowadays. She didn't have friends to give up and her parents hardly cared for her anymore. They probably hated her now that she was caught helping Griffin.

Pushing those thoughts to the back of her mind, Rose returned her gaze to Griffin even though he had his back slightly towards her. She noticed him touch his throat with his finger in a soothing massage. Rose's eyes scrunched up with concern at this, her mind naively passing over the obvious reason he was rubbing at his throat. "Is something wrong?" she asked, her voice innocent and sweet while her mind thought of a sore throat caused by a cold. It was taking her mind a few minutes to remember that Griffin didn't catch colds and his reason for his bothered throat was much more sinister.

Haley sighed and looked at the ground. "I know that better than most," she said, thinking back on not only Luna, the female werewolf that had taken care of her when she was a young werewolf, but also the few memories she had as a human child. She had never told anyone she came from abusive human home, not even Luna when the two of them were still traveling together. Haley herself had not been the focus of the abuse, but she had many images of her mother's bruised arms and bleeding face. The night she had been bitten was when she tried running away after her father thrown a vase at her. The scar was still slightly visible on her forearm, and she lightly touched that spot now.

Haley took a deeo breath and exhaled the memories, regaining her composer that she had lost for only a second, but she knew that Devin must have noticed her wavering expression. She returned her gaze to huim and shrugged. "Everyone has to learn to leave the past in the past. How else are you supposed to move on with your life?"

Griffin turned in a bit of surprise to Rose and immediately brought his hand down from his throat. He thought he had done it at just the right time so no one could notice, but as almost always, his presumptions brought him empty handed. The vampire coughed lightly and cleared his throat. "Yeah, I'm fine. Are you still hungry? Was the food in your bag enough?" He asked, trying to get the subject out of the way. If he got her mind off of the question, she would eventually forget it altogether... right?

He could have very well been wrong, but Griffin didn't care. For the moment he just tried his best to continue the sentences. "If not, I can maybe..." he strained his voice for the words, and his eyes flared a reddish color as the stress all came at once, but it quickly retreated and he continued without worry. "Team up with the wolves and we can go find something for you to eat." He dipped his head just slightly, trying not to look at Rose directly in the eyes. In case they flared up again. He didn't want her to see. Though, there always was the chance she was looking at him.

Devin looked at Hayley directly in the eyes and said, "Sometimes you can't." He turned towards the vampire, who, apparently couldn't think of anything but his past. All he had heard since he met him was the fact that he wanted Rose to trust him, or that he was sorry for anything he did, or random bits and pieces of his past. Then he turned to Cale. His eyes eventually wandered back to Hayley. "Sometimes it's built in."

Rose tried hard to look at Griffin in the face, but he ducked his head away from her. "No, I'm fine. It was plenty of food for tonight," she said, still worried about him. For a moment, Rose thought she saw a flash of red in his eyes, but she couldn't be sure. She grabbed his wrist in her hand and asked, "Are you sure you're alright?" She tried to step around him so she could see his face, but he wouldn't let her.

Haley nodded in agreement with Devin. "I'm not saying my past doesn't affect me," she said. "But there are somedays that I don't think about my childhood. There's somedays I forget Luna is trapped somewhere, probably being tortured by those humans. But both things never happen together." Haley turned away from Devin, suddenly feeling overwhelmed by emotion. She hadn't really thought so much about her parents and her mentor in a while, and the reason was because it always brought tears to her eyes.

Griffin was caught on an invisible limb when Rose grasped his palms. He closed his eyes tightly so that she wouldn't notice, but there seemed to be a reddish glow coming from them that he wasn't aware of. The thirst paired along with the stress of trying not to hurt the prey he usually killed was unbearably hard to get past. He finally opened his eyes and looked at her face, trying to gently, but desperately to get his hands away from hers. "Not to be rude, but..." he tried his luck at getting his hands away again, to no avail.

He sighed silently, but the fangs started growing out. "Rose, I'm not okay. I'm-" the fangs began growing and he hissed violently. "Please, just go with the werewolves for now." He tried to control himself but it was too much to be held by the very type of creature he needed to suffice. "They'll-" he closed his eyes suddenly, trying desperately to control himself, but failing miserably. "Keep you safe..." he finally couldn't handle it and pulled away from Rose in a last ditch attempt to keep from biting straight through her skin.

Devin nodded sincerely. "I'm sorry," he whispered.
