Featherpaw let herself be led outside by Winterpaw. "Tigerpaw has accused Scorchpaw of murder," she murmured, too numb from shock to speak above a cracked whisper. She noticed Winterpaw's green-gold eyes widen with disbelief.
"Tigerpaw and Scorchpaw snuck out of camp, Scorchpaw later than Tigerpaw, and by the time Bramblestar, Stormfang, Sunspots, and myself arrived, Scorchpaw was standing over the body of a Shadowclan kit, with Tigerpaw accusing her... But his scent was stronger on the kit than hers! No..." Featherpaw stumbled a step backwards. "Her scent was stale! That means that she didn't do it, right?" Hysteria reclaimed its hold over Featherpaw, her frost blue eyes pleading with Winterpaw. "Please tell me she's innocent," she whimpered.
********************** Jayfeather had just settled down for a few moments rest when footsteps once again rustle the ferns at his caves entrance. The medicinecat groggily staggered to his feet; what was it this time?
"Who's there?"
"It's Stormfang," called the warrior, taking care to not disturb either Sunspots's or Scorchpaw's uneasy slumber. "Bramblestar wants to depart in a few hours. Are the herbs ready?"
"They've been ready. Now if you don't mind, I would like to salvage some sleep from the night hours remaining before dawn," Jayfeather grumbled irritbly. Without waiting for a response, he collasped onto his paws again and journeyed to the land of dreams.

Sunpaw breathed slowly as she slept, unaware of the meeting between Jayfeather and Stormfang. She dreamed that she was standing at the Moonpool. A cat, gray and young with a mushed muzzle. "Good. You made it." The cat was Yellowfang, a cat Sunpaw walked frequently with.
A tortoiseshell she-cat sat next to Yellowfang, Spottedleaf. "Welcome, young apprentice. Much is comming to the forest. A kit died tonight, a ShadowClan kit. An innocent life. Innocent blood brings shadows to the forest. Shadows that StarClan have fought before."
Sunpaw nodded, understanding. "What is it I can do, Spottedleaf?"
Spottedleaf looked at Yellowfang, than to the medicine cat apprentice. "The dead know what the living cannot hear. Fire and Gray unite as one again. Lion and Jay walk with them. Sun will banish the shadows," she finished. She added ominously, "Tiger walks again, young one. Not all are what they seem."
Yellow fang huffed, "There will be pleanty of herbs this newleaf. Prod that mentor of yours and stock up good. You're going to need them. Leafbare is beginning. Be prepared."
Sunpaw blinked from her dream, the ominous warning in her ears. Suddenly, an orange fiery cat stood in front of her, green eyes soft with love. "Fire and Gray unite as one. Guide them with faith in StarClan." With that, the cat disappeared. Sunpaw sprang to her paws, StarClan! StarClan just visted her. HER She paced back and forth and sat in her nest. She didnt understand. Fire, Gray, Lion, Jay, Sun... what does the sun have to do with this?! And what did they mean by Tiger walking again... She sat at the entrance of the den, watching the sun rise.
StarClan... what can the sun banish when its power is so far from our reach?
****
Winterpaw blinked slowly, startled. he put his head over Featherpaws. "Sshh," he purred. "Scorchpaw is not a murderer. She isnt capable of killing in cold blood. I know it in my fur!" He licked her forehead a few times. "Come on, I'll stay up with you, okay?" He sat by her and pressed his side against hers.
**
((Following morning))
Bramblestar sat at the entrance of his den. He scanned the camp as the cats came out and milled about. He spotted his apprentice, and several others comming out. Jumping down, he stood near the fresh kill pile. "Scorchpaw, go get Featherpaw, Stormfang, Jayfeather, Sunpaw and Lionblaze."
Scorchpaw blinked but nodded. She turned quickly and called for Featherpaw and spotted Lionblaze going into the medicine den. Squeezing in, she stopped, blinking at the wrapped herbs. "Uh..." this wasnt something in her training.
Sunpaw chuckled. "Very articulate. Traveling herbs. We're all going to Moonpool."
Scorchpaw turned to Featherpaw. "What is the Moonpool...?"

Featherpaw's chest swelled, neither uncomfortable nor safe; warm, but bewildering. She allowed his scent to mingle with hers for a few moments. What am I doing? She quickly tore herself away; the dangerous-bewildering feeling overpowered the content warmness.
"Err, thanks, but that won't be necessary," she replied hastily, licking her downy chest fur in embarassment, before scampering off for the den. A sixth sense nagged at the back of her brain; she turned around and gazed at Winterpaw's dejected form before slowly slinking inside. I really am a mousebrain...
*********** The next morning, she groggily awoke to the sound of Scorchpaw's voice calling for her. Featherpaw groggily glanced around; the other nests were empty, again. Great. I've overslept
She quickly joined her friend infront of Jayfeather's den.
"Hmm? Moonpool? It's the special place medicine cats go to once a month to share tongues with Starclan, though clan leaders also go there to recieve their nine lives and new name at the beginning of their reign, as well as to share tongues," she replied in a low whisper.
********** Rainpaw dropped a thrush infront of Winterpaw for the two of them to share. He noticed his friend's tail twitch in acknowledgement, but his eyes seemed clouded as he gazed into the distance. He raised an eyebrow before clearing his throat.
"My my. The she cats look lovely this morning, don't they? Ahem; whisker for your thoughts?"

"I'm not hungry," Winterpaw muttered. "I... They came back late last night. Featherpaw seems scared of me." He pushes the thrush from side to side. "Rainpaw, I think Featherpaw might not like me. Am I doing something wrong?"
**
"Oh." Scorchpaw blinked and looked at the herbs. "And these are for..."
"Granted, the Moonpool is between ThunderClan and WindClan territory, it's tradition not to eat on the journey. It shows respect to StarClan," Sunpaw explained.
"Oh..." Scorchpaw said again, seeming very articulate. She bent down and sniffed the herbs and snorted, finding them bitter. She quickly ate without complaint though.
Bramblestar sat at the entrance, conversing with his deputy. Nodding at each traveler he got up. "Today we go to Moonpool. Each apprentice makes a journey with me at one point in time or another. I expect the utmost respect to any warrior of any clan we may encounter. Understood?"
Scorchpaw nodded immediately.
Stormfang kneeded the ground nervously. "Of course Bramblestar."
Tigerpaw watched outside and narrowed his eyes. Bramblestar was going to the moonpool? He crept quietly around the medicine den to stay out of sight. But he froze, seeing Jayfeathers ears swivel in his direction.

Rainpaw glanced at his friend. "I wouldn't think that; she's always been jumpy. I'd say it was because she likes you she acts that way, but is frightened of it. She-cats are backwards in that way," he said seriously. "Afterall, she seems to be the type that doesn't take praise or critisism very well. Scorchpaw, however..." he mused, purring slightly. "No, I don't think you have anything to worry about, given time."
************** Featherpaw purred in amusement at Scorchpaw's reaction to the strange herbs, though she wasn't much better herself. "Nasty, eh? I wonder if we might be able to sneak away for a quick drink of water sometime. Then again, it looks like we'll be leaving any moment."
Jayfeather cleared his throat. "So, are we going or not? And Stormfang, you might want to keep that apprentice of yours busy; he always seems to turn up where he shouldn't be."
Stormfang flattened his ears in irritation. So does Scorchpaw..., he thought. Aloud, he said,"It's already been taken care of. Cloudtail is supposed to keep an eye on him for me, and keep him out of trouble," he replied cooly.
Jayfeather snorted. "He better. Bramblestar, may we leave now? These herbs won't last forever."

Winterpaw grunted slightly and started eating. "Perhaps I'm trying too hard."
*****************
Bramblestar nodded, "Yes. Sunpaw, I'm counting on you," he murmured to the apprentice and waved his tail as he lead the patrol. "Scorchpaw, guide Jayfeather. We're taking the traditional way."
Scorchpaw saw Jayfeather flinch slightly and a deeper frown set in his face. She carefully set her tail around his shoulders and took up position next to him. "I'll take you as far as the lake border..." she muttered quietly. She walked with the tom, her thoughts flashing back to the kit. She shook her head swiftly, shaking away the memory. I didnt kill him... Iknow I didnt... didnt I?
The more she thought about it, the more sick to her hstomach she felt. Perhaps if she were faster, she could've prevented the killer from succeeding...
Stormfang kept pace with Lionblaze and Bramblestar, next to Featherpaw. "Featherpaw, are you okay?" he murmured.
*****************
((Back at Camp))
Tigerpaws tail was fluffed in irritation, he was a new apprentice! Shouldnt HE be going on this journey too? He growled mrrowed irritatedly as he obeyed Cloudtails orders. He stopped. I'm obeying a KITTYPET?! He sat down and began grooming himself.
Cloudtail flicked his tail. He narrowed his eyes at the tabby apprentice. "Tigerpaw! We need that mouse bile for Brighthearts ticks." He followed the apprentice just beyond the meidicne den and stopped him, whirling around. "And if you thinka bout another mouse bile incident, i'll claw both your ears off!" He narrowed his eyes and turned, flicking his tail in irritation. He sat down and began giving out orders for patrols.
Sorrelpaw was comming back in with todays hunt and he motioned her over. "Thinking about taking Rainpaw out for a training session?"
"I cant, Cloudtail. I wrenched my shoulder from stepping in a fox hole. I need a rest or else Jayfeather will claw my tail off."
Sunpaw appeared just at that moment and nosed the elder warriors shoulder. "You need a day," she decided, lookinga t Sorreltail. "I'll get you something for the pain, but no vigerous training. Got it?"
Sorreltail blinked at the young apprentice. Already she was taking on many responsibilities. "Yes, Sunpaw, thankyou."

Sorreltail sighed, leaning back on her haunches. I'm getting too old for this. She craned her neck; Rainpaw was padding towards the medicine den with a squirrel snapped between his jaws. After plopping it next to Sunpaw, he made his way towards his mentor. "For the final time, I'm alright," she snapped.
Rainpaw shrugged. "Doesn't hurt to check," he replied good naturedly. "Anyways, what would you like me to do now?"
Sorreltail reclined on her belly, paws stretched infront of her. "Go ahead and change the moss in the queen's and elder's den," she yawned as the poppy seeds took effect.
"Whatever you say," he replied, tail waving in a lopsided figure eight as he exited the den.
************ Tigerpaw looked up from Brightheart's tick removal, a task that neither elder nor apprentice enjoyed. Rainpaw had just entered the den and was clearing out the old nests.
"Would you please stop gawking and finish the task? And easy on that bile; only alittle bit is needed," grumbled Brightheart irritbly.
Tigerpaw rolled his eyes. "I wouldn't have to use so much if you didn't go and get yourself covered in ticks everyday," he grumbled under his breath.
Rainpaw looked up from his task, moss clinging to his whiskers and ears. "My my. Is that anyway to treat an elder?" he said dryly.
"Shaddup! Nobody asked you, fox-brain!" Tigerpaw hissed.
Rainpaw supressed a snicker. "That's because nobody needed to," he replied. "Anyways, we'll all be elders eventually, so you better take good care of them now or I'll make sure that the apprentices taking care of us return the favor to you."
Tigerpaw flattened his ears. "Like I don't know that..." His tail lashed indignantly. "But why couldn't I go too?" he whined.
Rainpaw raised an eyebrow. "So that's why you're pricklier than usual. Winterpaw and I haven't been to the moonpool yet either; this is the first time in months that Bramblestar has ever wanted to visit it. Besides, everyone knows that if you went instead, you'd be constantly picking fights with Scorchpaw, as if Bramblestar doesn't have enough grey hairs on his mussel as it is!" he purred at his own joke.
Tigerpaw didn't find it so funny. "I would not!" he snapped. "Besides, what does it matter to you? She's a kittypet!"
"Clan mate," Rainpaw corrected.
"As I said, what does it matter to you?" the tabby grumbled.
"Eh, not much. Unlike you, I don't like animosity within the clan," he replied, and before Tigerpaw could say anymore, stalked off to minister to the queens. Scorchpaw, keep yourself out of trouble from now on, you hear? The rest of us can't continue to defend you!
********** Featherpaw glanced at the senior warrior. "I'm fine," she replied curtly. "Scorchpaw is the one you should be worried about. Why do you ask anyways?"
Jayfeather grudgingly accepted Scorchpaw's guidance. "I'm not completely helpless, you know," he called to Bramblestar. "I've made this journey several times by myself. By the way the terrain smells, we should be reaching the half way mark any moment now."

Stormfang looked at her, his tabby coat catching the sunlight. "I'm a warrior and a mentor. I'm not heartless. Scorchpaw is your friend, and your brother accused her of murder. I doubt you're okay with that. I cant see Scorchpaw as a killer. I beleive all the way to StarClan that she is innocent. If I beleive you, than I can speak for much of the clan that they do too."
What Stormfang hadnt told the apprentice was that word about the kit murder spread like wildfire, but he made it quite clear that Scorchpaw was innocent til proven guilty. In the eyes of the clan, she is innocent. He made sure of that.
Bramblestar ignored his medicine cat, taking the route and circled around up towards the WindClan border.
"Bramblestar!" a white tom called from a hill, jumping down and stopping at the border. "Bramblestar, I must speak to you on behalf of my Clan." It was the WindClan leader... Onestar.
Scorchpaw tensed, digging her claws into the ground. They werent supposed to be stopped. From what she got from Sunpaw and Featherpaw... this was a sacred journey.
Bramblestar stopped, gazing at Onestar, his tail flicking slowly. "This is not the time, Onestar. I am on my way to Moonpool and I wont be stopped."
Onestar crossed his path. "Please, just hear me out. This is a matter of life and death!"
[i]Death[i/] the word rang in Scorchpaws ears and she had a flashback to he kit just the night before. If this was important enough to ring out that his clan was near death, she felt an immediate urge to stop and help.
"That's a strong statement, Onestar. What is it that you stop us on the journey for?"
"Onestar... my clan is dying. we need food so bad that our bellys claw at us day and night. Kits are dying as are their mothers!"
Bramblestar flicked Jayfeather on the shoulder with his tail in silent signal. He sat there, pondering... Firestar would never have turned Onestar away. This was not a time to ignore a clear call to his warrior ancestors... what is it he should do?
***
Winterpaw returned with Rosetail and Clawfoot from hunting and a training session. He rolled his shoulders and dropped his good hunting of a shrew, two squirells and three mice.
"Good work," Cloudtail praised. "Get yourself something to eat and releive your denmate for sharing tongues."
Winterpaw dipped his head with a gentle purr and waved his tail to Rainpaw and Tigerpaw. "Who's up for the next hunt at sunghigh?!"

Jayfeather felt the tiny disturbance in the air currents and swiftly joined his leader and deputy. Neither cat spoke for a few moments, each one deep within his own thoughts. Finally, sensing that Bramblestar wanted him to speak first, Jayfeather shattered the uneasy silence.
"Bramblestar. You must reach the Moonpool, but Windclan is of dire need as well. Send Lionblaze back; let him organize a hunting patrol to ration enough prey for Windclan, and to keep the clan in order; I have a sixth sense prodding me that more trouble is to come," Jayfeather murmured warily, angling his ears back towards Thunderclan territory.
Featherpaw's ears flattened; it was rare that Stormfang ever offered consoling. "I know that Scorchpaw couldn't and didn't do it; her scent was stale; at least a day old, and the smell of blood was fresh. But... no! Tigerpaw wouldn't! ...he's my brother. Surely there must be some mistake! He's a bully, but he wouldn't, would he?" Dread and defeat leadened her paws, her tail drooped. But deep down in the marrow -in the core of her entire being- she knew who she would chose if it came down to it, and it wasn't Tigerpaw.
*********************** Rainpaw purred. "Count me in for sure! But which warrior are we gonna drag in with us?"
"Who says we have to have a warrior?" Tigerpaw interjected, eyes gleaming with a dangerous glint.
"Don't be a mousebrain!" Rainpaw scoffed. "YOU of all people should know better! Afterall; you're still in some pretty hot water."
"It was only a suggestion!" Tigerpaw puffed indignantly.
"Alright, alright! Keep your fur on!" Rainpaw groaned. Sheesh! This guy is more high-matinence than a kit!

Bramblestar twitched his tail slowly, that would leave the Clan unprotected. That was not an option. "I will send a patrol. Stormfang, go back to camp and explain to Lionblaze what's happening. Tell him to organize the patrol." he adde closer to his ear. "But tell him not to leave camp."
Stormfang nodded and bounded back to camp... though not entirely pleased with being sent away on such an important journey... he prayed that no cat would dare brake truce at the Moonpool... not with such important cats visiting with StarClan.
Onestar dipped his head. "I will be waiting. Thankyou Bramblestar. StarClan go with you." He turned and bounded back to his camp, his ribs sticking out in his fur.
Scorchpaw licked at her chest fur and glanced at Featherpaw. The death of the kit still in her mind. Once Jayfeather and Bramblestar met at the Moonpool tonight... she'd talk to her. Right now, there were too many ears.
****************
Tigerpaws tail lashed slowly, irritated beyond anything. He wanted so badly to sneak out of camp and follow the StarClan patrol, but the mousebrain kittypet Cloudtail was watching him like a hawk! He grumbled as he dropped his catch into the fresh kill pile and licked his shoulder. This was so boring!
He glanced around and spotted Stormfang jumping out of the entrance. He blinked. What now? Did Bramblestar get attacked?! he thought in alarm.

Featherpaw gazed in silence as the warrior dashed off the way they had come. Her pelt prickled under her denmate's gaze; Scorchpaw needed to talk to her, that much was certain.
Jayfeather flexed his claws in impatience; it was close to sunhigh, and they still had a ways to go in order to reach Moonpool by evening. Does Bramblestar think me a helpless kit? he thought irritbly. We should be waiting for starlight at its shores by now!"
********** Cloudtail lashed his tail impatiently; Tigerpaw had been dragging his paws all day, and had a bad attitude to go with it. Not only that, but the tabby apprentice continously made several attempts to sneak off. Finally, in exasperation, he had promised him a battle training session, after much pleading from Tigerpaw for a chance to take a break from camp.
[[Previous Conversation]] "Can't I go outside of camp? I've been cooped up all day!" whined Tigerpaw, doning his most innocent act.
"Hmm..." thought Cloudtail, pretending to give it some thought. "How 'bout no?"
"Please! Just a hunting patrol; the clan's getting low on freshkill again."
Cloudtail cast a sidelong glance at the apprentice. "Not a chance. You have a track record of wandering off."
Tigerpaw looked crushed; he dragged his tail in the dust behind him as he made his way to the warriors' den to change the moss.
Great, Cloudtail grumbled. Oh, I'll never live this down... He glanced at the sulking kitten to his right and sighed. "Tell you what; I'll take you battle training after the sun-high meal, if you behave until then."
[[Back to Present]] It was now past sun-high and cats were departing the clearing to carry on their warrior duties. At last, Cloudtail spotted the younger cat, entering camp from the back entrance reserved for making dirt. The warrior raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Where have you been?" he demanded.
"Where do you think I was?" puffed Tigerpaw indignently, feigning embarassment.
Cloudtail rolled his eye. "Well alright then. Let's get a move on," he grumbled.

Bramblestar stopped just beyond the path and looked at the two apprentices. "Stay here. Jayfeather and I will continue foreward." With a flick of his tail, he continued onward, the sun was beginning to set... things had to be said to his warrior ancestors that couldnt wait anylonger. He felt his paws step into a familiar worn pathway... and he cuold feel his ancestors weave around him.
Scorchpaw waited till the two cats moved away before turning to Featherpaw. "We have got to help with WindClan. I dont know what's going on, but I have to do something about it. I dont know why, but I think if we can somehow make peace with WindClan, it'll help soothe the others... and that's a start."
The Dead know what the living cannot hear, the red cat told her. "Do you know of a cat with an orange pelt? Perhaps he was a warrior or something? He had green eyes."
***
Stormfang had been talking with Lionblaze and nodded once. "Okay. CLoudtail! You and Tigerpaw are needed for this mission! Rainpaw, Rosethorn, Clawfoot, Sunspots! 'Cmon let's get moving!"
Tigerpaw lifted his head. "Go? Go where?" He demanded. "We were going for training! Like you're supposed to do with me!"
"There is trouble in WindClan and ThunderClan has been beseeched for help. Get your tail over hear and stop complaining!" Stormfang yowled at his apprentice. He bent down, "IF you do well, this may get you out of punishment." With that, he turned to the patrol. "We're starting a hunting patrol for WindClan. I dont know how Bramblestar wants it, but we're going to obey. Be prepared for anything. If you get any sign of trouble, come to me or Clawfoot. Do not antagonize the cats. At all." He glanced at Tigerpaw. Please StarClan... let him behave! "Alright! Move out!"
***
At the border, Onestar waited with his deputy Sandtail. "They're comming."
Sandtail nodded, "This is a wise decision Onestar... no cat in WindClan will ever beleive you're weak. It's for the good of the Clan."

Featherpaw flicked her tail idly. "Green eyes... orange fur... The only cat I know by that description is Sandstorm, and she's living. Then again, her mate and our late leader, Firestar had that same coloring, but most of my memories of him are foggy; perhaps you saw him?" She let her voice trail away, briefly enjoying the warm weather and gentle breeze of the early evening.
"Scorchpaw," she suddenly said, "I know you must feel partially responsible for that incident, but us helping Windclan on our own won't solve anything, expecially something you didn't commit. No, Bramblestar has already ordered for a patrol to be made -he was Firestar's former apprentice; many of our late leader's beliefs were passed down to him- so Windclan is in safe paws. Besides, what good would it do? We'd most likely get underfoot and end up wallowing in deeper trouble for disobeying Bramblestar's orders. Sometime's it's for the best to lay low and sit out a round or two..."
A yawn escaped from between her jaws; she settled down on a soft patch of moss growing on a tree root. "So what do you think of Rainpaw? And don't even try to deny that you admire him; I saw that glance you gave him!" Featherpaw winked.
*** Sunspots arose stiffly from her nest stiffly when she heard her name called; thanks to Jayfeather's experiment with the webbing, she was able to resume warrior tasks sooner than usually possible, though she still limped slightly and the pain was a constant dull throb without poppyseeds. Finally; something to do!
Clawfoot glanced at the younger warrior joining the assembling patrol. "How's the shoulder, eh Sunspots?" he asked, smugness slightly coloring his tone.
"Fine, thank you," Sunspots sniffed cooly, conciously avoiding even the slightest sign of weakness.
Rainpaw shoved his vole towards Winterpaw. "You finish it; time for some 'glorious patrol' with the stinker," he grumbled under his breath.
Tigerpaw felt like he had been pricked by a hedgehog's needle; he quickly groomed his tail in an attempt do wash away any sign of injured pride. This isn't happening! This is not the way it should be! I can't wait any longer; I must become a model warrior NOW!!! He hesitently crept towards Rainpaw as they gathered. "Hi, Rainpaw," he mewed, adding the extra quiver to his voice.
Guilt nibbled at Rainpaw's core. "Um, hi? We're from the same clan you know," he mewed. "And you better not cause any trouble!" he added irritbly. Irritated at Tigerpaw's polar behavior; irritated at himself for pittying the rascal.

Scorchapws whiskers twitched, acknowledging Featherpaws wise and gentle words. She nodded in agreement after a moment. Now wasnt a time to be disobeying orders. What was she thinking! At teh mention of Rainpaws name, her whiskers warmed and she licked a paw and drew it over her ear.
"Aah.. I dont know what you're talking about," she mewed. "He's a nice cat."

Bramblestar waited til the moon was directly over their heads. It's time he thought. He drank from the pool and immediately fell into a deep sleep.
He felt himself drifting and he twitched his whiskers as a familiar, musky scent reached his nose.
"Wake up, Bramblestar," a fiery orange cat ordered, sitting with his tail curled around his paws. "You two Jayfeather. Up with you."
Bramblestar finally opened his eyes and dipped his head to his predecessor. "Firestar, there is much going on... what in the name of StarClan is going on?!"
"I told you, 'Tiger prowls again.'" Firestar replied calmly. "Fire and Gray unite as one once again."
"Firestar," a young appearing cat with an angular head voiced, sitting beside him. "A dark cloud drifts over ThunderClan. Bramblestar you must act quickly and soon." This cat was Spottedleaf.

Stormfang followed Onestar, each of his patrol with a peice of prey in their jaws.
Onestar glanced around and saw his apprentice, Tallpaw, and signaled her. "forewarn the Clan I'm comming. And with food."
Tigerpaw hissed at the apprentice. He watched as the leggy black cat darted nimbly back up the slope and continued following by Stormfang. He looked back at Sunspots and fell back to walk beside her. "You think that Scorchpaw is a troublemaker?" he mewed past his prey.
