Roi Doberwolf wrote: What I say about furries is mostly in defense for those I know who are furries, and are great people who don't deserve to be bashed. Well try to remember that furries (and sometimes their friends) are a bit touchy, and read into things people say. Especially on sites that are openly encouraging of that pastime. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But there is a tendency, even on this site, to castigate and alienate anyone who might even infer (much less openly say) they find furries weird, or that they just don't happen to like the furry thing, etc. And if they express that the furry pastime is not their thing, then they invariably get assaulted with a barrage of pointed questions and everything short of (or on par with) accusations that they are "haterz". It's quite frustrating, and downright antisocial to people to be treated that way simply because they have the willingess (or perhaps even the courage, if they are concerned about their peers' reactions) to say that they have less than a "rah-rah" view of the whole furry thing. But does that mean that I think the trolls, who hunt down and persecute furries, are good people? Not. They're not even in the same league as the others I mentioned. They're just basement-dwelling freaks who need attention and thrive on it.

Frankly, Cavalier, I don't see this topic going anywhere you suggested it would with that graphic. So far, people have been respectful of each other whether they like the furry thing or not (and whether they say they are one or not).
So I don't see the problem here...

It's not that people are arguing per-say, but the tension in here is very high... That can only happen if people are that touchy about things. Frankly, I still don't see it.

The reason why some furries (and many other 'labeled' groups) can get touchy and ask questions is because they can feel insecure. Being that there /are/ many people out there that sadly can get harsh towards a group (especially sexuality-wise) they feel the need to question whoever opposes in a conversation so they could grasp an understanding as to why people are harsh towards them. Now, granted, they shouldn't be harsh to someone who simply opposes. Sometimes things can get *too* touchy and things then get out of hand.

Sexuality-wise as in homosexuals or bisexuals.
Opposes as in what you've explained earlier. Someone making a simple statement saying they don't like furries.

;] Well, for the first part, the only thing I will say (because I don't wish to get into a disagreeable discussion) is that I always thought that furries wanted others to know that they come in all sexualities, not just homosexuals and bisexuals. As to the second part, simply not liking furries or the furry pastime is not the same thing as "opposition". That is a bad choice of words. Opposition implies conflict. Most people who either don't like furries or the furry pastime are not in conflict with furries, nor are they seeking it. Though it often comes to them if they express their dislike. And that is unfortunate. People have a right to express their opinions.

There's a very fine line in furry opposition, and I think this is what Jersey is getting at.
"I don't like furries" can be construed as "I don't like the people who ARE furries" and not "I don't like furries as in the actual anthro animal genre."
The oversensitive furries take "I don't like furries" as the FORMER meaning, even though in most cases the person claiming to dislike furries means the LATTER meaning. Most people don't wish ill against furries, they just don't like anthro animals or what the furries have done to their own fandom. And that's groovy, there's no law stating you have to like the furry genre. If it's not your cup of tea, then oh well. Not my or anyone else's problem.
The sucky thing about the furry fandom is that some furries take on furry as their whole identity. You insult the furry fandom, you you insult the person who is a furry. Some furries no longer seperate themselves as "a person who happens to be a furry," they view themselves as "100% FURRY4EVA." The line is blurred between subculture and identity.

I do not consider myself a furry. I don't do the suiting, attend cons, or do any of that. In fact, the only thing that really links me to the fandom is the existence of my fursona. But then again, the way I see my fursona is more as an extension of myself, someone I wish I could turn into at random points just to have fun and be silly, but not someone I want to be 24/7. A lot of people don't even know I really have a fursona because I don't talk about it much - I've never really wanted to be labeled as a furry, since really I'm not.
However, in the sense that Steet mentioned, being closer to animals than people sometimes, I can totally relate to. Before I really made close friends when I was a younger child, my friends were my dogs, and I used to wish that I could talk to them. That's probably the biggest reason I have for heading toward Vet school, so that I could care for my friends.

I agree with you completely. I don't like the whole fandom.. but it doesn't mean I dislike furries themselves. Like I've said previously, I don't like the whole label of loving and drawing animals, as well as owning a fursona. Furries themselves particuarly only annoy me when they act like animals, call they're partners/spouses 'mates' and believe they're actually nonhuman. Plus I'm highly against all the weird fetishes - particuarly the illegal ones. I'm proud to call myself a non-furry. I'm not anti-furry.. but that doesn't mean I like them. But I won't stop them from being furry, no matter how much they irritate me. x]
