Maya rummaged through the pantry first, only finding a small box of stale crackers. "We've got these," she said, setting them down ona dusty counter. Next she looked through the fridge, tendrils of cool air chiling her face as she searched for something. "we have expired milk," she announced. "And a container of old yogurt that is still good....I think."

He stiffened he hated the hose "Fine,"He said giving up. he turned around to face his sister,"Mom's dead,"He said quickly hoping she didn't understand what he said. He coughed and backed away thinking she was going to punch him in the gut and say he was lying.

Seeing tears form in Pippa's eyes, Maya walked over to her and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. She glared at Lark as she did this, her hazel eyes hard and unbeleiving. "Really, stop Lark. Joking about that is wrong," she said sternly. "Mom isn't dead," she said firmly. But, could she be? A tiny bit of doubt entered her, making her stomach knot.

Carlee stopped in her tracks. Without looking away from the opposite wall, she roared, "Lark! Don't-!" she made a fist and shook it. Her voice was softer as she whispered, "Don't say that..." tears streamed down her face. She knew it was true. The little girl swerved around angrily and snarled, "Mom isn't dead! She isn't! She promised she would come back for us!" she ran into her room, screaming, "She will come back! You'll see!" Carlee slammed the door and ran over to throw things off her shelves and hit the walls in rage.

"You see what you did?" Maya said angrily. "All because of your stupid, lame joke!' Her voice had raised steadily, and she was shouting be the end of the sentence. She heard thuds, and she assumed Carlee was either punching, kicking, or throwing things at her battered wall.

When he was outside he sighed "I should have thought this through!"He muttered bitterly kicking a stone on the side walk. "I should have told them later,"

Maya felt as if she was going to pass out as the icy hand resident around her jittery heart closed around it tighter. Her hand dropped from Pippa's shoulder, and she stared blankly at the walls, feeling shock and greif course through her.
