Aniu and the others of the pack had fought off the people and the dogs so she went to go check on Ebony. She got there and put him on her back and carried him to the den.

"hey bro" said ebony,it was meant to sound cheerful but came out as a hoarse whisper.Ebony grimaced in pain then was enveloped by darkness once more.

Balto and Whisper ran out to Ebony at the same time, " Ebony! What happened?" They yelled in unison, "And where's mother?" Whisper added.

Balto helped out with Whisper howling with them. Sure his howl wasn't a great big howl, but, it was the best he could do. After his first howl, he looked over and saw his mother. He ran up to her. Her coat was blood matted, and white. She looked like a demon, " Mother......What happened?" Was all he could say before he collapsed onto her body. He let out a big sob and felt Taka and whisper come over. Balto looked up at Taka with tear stained eyes and burried his face in his big brother's chest and cried, " Momma's gone Tak." He cried looking up at him.

Taka looked at his little brother "Its gonna be all right Balto,I promise" but how could he make that promise "come on Im going to find dad" he whispered.

"Balto you can't do anything for her now" he said he looked at his brother "come on we've got to go" he said.to be honest he couldn't bear to look at his mother body for another minute.

Whisper sighed, "Yeah Balto. Let's go. Ok?" She then thought about what would happen if she left.
Balto got up and walked shakily to his brother and sister.

Taka looked at his brother,Balto was barely off his mothers milk."come on Balto we'll be fine" he whispered.but the words were hollow and just seemed to sit there not meaning anything.
