I know right!?! I get called emo all the time at school cause I tend to dress dark, my hair falls in my face, and I love the band Three days grace...it annoys the heck out of me.

well, being emo is a choice of people...no one is allowed to say what the others have to do...if someone is an emo, well, we have to respect him/her for the choice...I have a lot of emo in my class and school but I (and my school mates) don't say anything about this, well, exept saying "emo-semo" XD but I don't traslate it in english because the emos here will probably kill me XP no, it's not a bad word, don't worry ;]

Okay, lets set this straight. Adressing a previously mentioned stament; goth is NOT emo. Someone else notified the person that said this and I'm just agreeing with that. I would also like to say that goth is not a stereotype, it's a style of art/literature/design/music that can also be considered a lifestyle or said as an adjective to describe someone who is interested in said style. Emo, however is a little more confusing. First, not all CUTTERS are emo's and not all EMO's are cutters. Self-mutilation began its notorious climb into the public eye during the early 60's when the publicity finally noticed that it was an increasing problem. In fact, their is a very good biography about a cutter in the 60's called Cut, explaining the reasons why she did and how she stopped. As a general consesus, cutting usually is done to relieve stress, anger, or depression. Often the phsyical pain they feel temporarily distracts them from their other problems. I can attest to that. NOTE: To all the people I see on the web that say you hate emo's/cutters; quit being part of the problem! If it matters that much to you actually try and help the people instead of putting them down and condemning something you know nothing about. Reality check people, some people have really rough lives and some may not have it THAT bad but they just arent strong enough to cope with it. So until you know in depth the EXACT reasons why a person DOES anything or IS anything, dont judge them. How can you understand something you've never gone through? Anyway, emo began as a music style that was a derivitive of punk, starting with bands like Sunnyday Realestate. It then got a following that wore SIMILAR clothes that goths wore, i.e. (black, leather, metal, studs, spikes,) which caused great confusion between the two. Then it was used as a stereotype for peopel who were considered overly emotional, but not neccessarily cutters. Thank you.
