He was stubborn, after a fashion. We usually think of stubborness as a negative thing, like Steele's refusal to accept help or give Balto a chance to prove himself. But Balto was as stubborn, or almost as much anyway. No matter what Steele, the wild, or anything else threw his way, he wouldn't quit. Except for that one low point falling off the cliff, he refused to cave in.

I think he's also selfless because nobody cares about him except Boris and Muck and Luk and when he got some attention Jenna started to fade in.

At the time Balto also loves Jenna's owner Rosie, because she's the only human in town that likes balto for who he is. Balto manly did this for Jenna and Rosie, and yeah, the other "little ones". Remember after Balto nearly falls to his death when he gets out of the snow he' whispers to himself is despair, "Rosie..." believing that he has failed and that Rosie's life is doomed. He does care very much for Rosie. that must really make him slefless
