I'm seeing a lot of "person B" stole "person A's" username, so I'm going to go ahead and point out a few things.

One, if you can imagine it, chances are it's already been thought of and/or done. That's just the beauty of diversity and it's results. Heck, I thought that my username was original at one point, but searching Google one boring day I found out that at least two random people on random forums have my username (which is actually just the Finnish word for coffee that I "Americanized" by adding an "e" to the end of it a few years ago).

Two, and an offshoot of point one, some people will decide to join a site and have no idea what to use for a username. So they go ahead and use a name related to the site they are joining. Hence names like "WhiteWolf" and "Balto." They didn't intentionally "steal" these names, they just used ones that made sense to them when joining a Balto/wolf site.

Now getting back to the reason this thread was even started...

Offensive usernames. A username like "man boobs" actually amuses me because I just have a sick sense of humor like that, but for names like "characterblahblahblah_hater," they just annoy me for the fact that when I see usernames like that, I know the person is most leikly gng 2 tiep lyk dis, among other n00bish traits.

Some of you may think that this has absoulutly nothing to do with this topic but,

I heard that on that myspace site, there were nearly forty people who had criminal records with you-know-what. They had been told to stay off but what do you know.

I hope that isn't happening here. This is a good forum. Let's not have people mess it up!

Well, myspace does have a lot more people than here (there's like millions there) , but I do hope there's nothing like that here...

Does anyone have any ideas as to how we can make this stop?

(I read once that in games like 'Star Wars Galaxies' or any other online game, when you talk to some one it actually filters out any bad words. Could we do that with usernames?)

I agree with everyone about this, and personally, and this is not to offend anyone, but I think that the word "cat" should no longer be allowed for username registry. Why because I went through the meberlist and there are an extreme amout of "cats" here. believe it or not, I find it irritating and very complicated when you use overused and random words like "cat, balto, jenna, alue, steele, kiona, and any other name that's been used more than 3 times!

really, it's one thing for a person to maybe register with a word like that once or twice, but when 20 people have that word, then someone is either fake or impostering, both of which are annoying and immoral. the way I see it, this is just another way for people to mock and copy each other.

again, this is not to offend, i'm just calling it as I see it.

So then, you mean that the first visitors of the site had the right to use such words to make their usernames, but now the new visitors shouldn't? That wouldn't be very fair...And no one, especially new visitors, can know which are the most common usernames.

Honestly Rozalyn, that was a little dramatic. It isn't "immoral" to copy a name. And besides, you can't have the exact same username as someone else on this site, and many others. Just because they used part of a name, or took an idea from a name, doesn't mean they're the worst people ever to walk the face of the earth.

Quite right. I know tons of people here with some name affiliated with the word "dragon", which doesn't bother me none. And to think adding a new rules that states:

Quote:
Rule X: No one is allowed to have the word "cat" in their username

...sounds a bit out of place. Wouldn't you agree? :D

not what i'm saying. there is nothing wrong with those people using those words, but there is something wrong when they do it to copy off someone else or when thier trying to talk about someone. i saw a username that was almost identical to "catwhohas14tails", and actually, i was offended. it's one thing for it to be a coincidence, it's different when you just do it for the sake of trying to be someone else. that's what i have the problem with. and that IS immoral when you do it for that reason, because copying someones name isn't going to make you that person, be popular, or anything else that they associate that with, that is my problem. how would you feel if someone registered with names like this:

ihatesteet

desirae24

iamsuka

and other names like that, that would bother anyone. those names are examples of what many people on the site register with, not those exact names. that's what i'm talking about.

Something that I don't like is how several people have the same usernames. Granted, it's hard to see who has what username out of 4,000 users.

Also, not so good usernames are an annoyance. I was searching thru the Memberlist and these are some of the names I saw...

Ihatebalto (no joke. This is the username)

Sexy..(something. didn't pay attention)

and there was another one that said the word sexy in it. This is a kids site for crying out loud!

I couldn't agree more! Some of these usernames are weird.

I hear you.. and this goes for any community, I don't like it when people call themselves 'Balto' and make everyone else call them that. There is only one Balto and it isn't anyone here or there.

Yes! This gets me all the time! I think that you should have your own username named after a character you've made or just a nickname you have. Let's not forget that Balto and all other characters are copyrighted to Universal, by asking to be called Balto or Steele or Kodi or whatever is surely stealing the character?
