Pete: Someone once compared your life (however errored he/she was) to that of Hamlet. If you could compare your life to any Shakesperean character who would it be?

Toby: If your kids managed to cause City Hall to collapse (don't asky me why?) what would you do?

Luna: Same question as Toby.

Terry: (Incidently your name is the same as my grandmothers.) Now that Toby has given you grandchildren do you see him as setting the bar high for your other sons?

Rex: Have you ever stayed up for more than 24 hours on officail police business?

Rex: A polar bear or arctic fox to ward off the blasted cold around here.
Terry: Rex, don't be such a grump. As for myself, just about everyone I know is into running in one way or another, but I've never been very fast. So I think it might be nice to try something fast like a caribou.
Toby: I'd want to be an eagle, or maybe a snowy owl. I think it would be fun to fly.
Luna: Orca for me, assuming wolf would be considered cheating because I am part wolf. I've heard orcas behave a lot like wolves, so it might be fun to be one.
Pete: I'd wanna be something good and tough like a polar bear.


Pete: Well, I'm not much of a book guy. Toby, you know anything about this Shakespeare guy?
Toby: No, Charlie doesn't usually listen to anything quite that exotic for bedtime stories.
Dragon Tamer: I admit to having no expertise on Shakespeare, but I think Pete is somewhat like Romeo. Once he found someone he really cared about, he was willing to lay down anything, even his life, for her sake. I'm just glad it didn't end the same.
Pete: Why, what happened to him?
Dragon Tamer: Long story short, he died.
Pete: Oh.


Toby: First of all, I'd want to know how they did it. When that was done, I'd probably read them the riot act.
Luna: Same here. I don't like to get angry with them, but over something that serious, I'd have to be at least a little stern with them.


Terry: I suppose so. I don't want to rush them, but it's nice to know that my children are finding happiness and stability as I have. And I don't think anyone can truly be complete on their own.

Rex: On a few occasions. When someone needs to be tracked down, especially a lost child, there's no time to waste. Every second counts, and I'd rather die than let a person freeze to death while I was catching forty winks.

Toby: What would you do if I sang out tune? Would you stand up and walk out on me?

Arrow: Have you ever used your borthers or sisters as scapegoats to evade punishment?

Pete: Which would be worse for you, one day of absolute, back breaking, paw-acheing labor, or a whole week of utter bordem?

Terry: When Pete was younger was he ever one to compete with this siblings for approvel from Yukon or you?

Toby: I'd try to be a little more polite, but you know how sensitive our ears are.
Luna: Like when I told you we had an anniversary coming up?
Toby: (nervously) Uh, of course.


Arrow: Uh, no.
Luna: Come on, you know better than that.
Arrow: Okay, maybe once..


Pete: I'll take the work. Keeps a dog in shape.


Terry: They all did, but Pete was especially anxious for his father's approval. It was never hard to get, but that didn't stop him from giving it 110%.

Toby: Is your sense of smell less than, equal to, or greater than your father's?
Luna: What is Balto's biggest fear? It's spiders, isn't it? (deathly afraid of all arachnids (me))
Arrow: What is your biggest fear?
Oh heck with it, what's everyone's greatest fear?

Toby: I guess it's hard to say. Dad says it's better than his, which I don't really get. I mean, he's a pure-bred bloodhound.
Rex: I think it's the way the breeds mix. One breed may be generally stonger than another, but sometimes when you mix the two you get pups that are stronger, faster, and healthier than the purebreds. I think that's how it turned out in your case, son. And speaking of health... [coughs] I do tend to get congested in the blasted cold up here.
Toby: Oh, come on, Dad, you never use that excuse when it's an emergency.
Rex: Well, maybe you're right.


Star: I'm afraid of spiders too.
Angel: I'm not.
Melchior: Good, there's one now.
Star: Eek!
[Angel stifles a similar reaction]
Caspar: I'm afraid of water.
Angel: Liar, you just say that to get out of taking a bath. And Melchior's scared to be alone in the dark.
Melchior: Am not!
Angel: Are too!
Melchior: Am not!
Angel: Are too!
Toby: I'm afraid if you two don't stop it, you'll both have to sit by yourselves for awhile.
Balthasar: I'm afraid of the dark unless Mom and Dad are there too. And I'm kind of scared of sparks jumping out of the fireplace.
Luna: [smiles] That's why you're so good about keeping your distance from it. Now, about Balto... [clicks tongue, thinking] I don't know if Grandpa was ever really afraid of anything, except when someone was in danger. He didn't really seem to have any one thing that would set him off, but he did worry a lot when it looked like he was in danger of letting someone get hurt or even just failing them. As for me, I sometimes used to be afraid of people finding out I was from Steele's line, but now I'm a little less worried about that. I guess the worst thing I can imagine, if you want to call that my worst fear, is losing my family. Some people, some dogs too, think I'm pretty independent. The truth is, I don't know what I'd do without them.
Arrow: I find it pretty scary to think that maybe I could end up alone again, like when my first parents died. But then I look at Mom and Dad (Luna and Toby) and I know I've got nothing to be afraid of.
Terry: I must admit, I'm most afraid of losing Rex. Admittedly, we're far enough along in years that we both know we have more behind us than ahead, but I still have nightmares about how I lost Yukon and fear, not so much for that, but that something like that could happen to Rex or to Pete or Toby. Violent deaths scare me.
Rex: As a police dog, I don't have much room for fear in my life. Especially at my age, when you've been around enough times. I do fear for the people I have to track down, or for those they might hurt, depending. But when I'm up against things like bears or the odd mountain lion, yeah, I get a little spooked. The one thing that really scares me is the prospect of running into something with rabies. That I can't bear to think about.
Pete: I kinda get worried sometimes when my training doesn't go well. Like I could end up being what I always used to take everyone else for: a loser. Kinda funny, huh?

Everyone: Everyone loves Christmas, some for less then great reasons, still there is so much to love about the holiday, I just don't like one thing. The music. What are all your feelings?

Toby: If you could have any human job what would it be?
Luna: What will your family do with Balto when he, you know.......passes on from this life to the next?
Pete: On a scale from one to ten with ten being the highest how would you rate your apperance?
Haley and Phobe: How would you two rate Pete and is this consistent with other ladies?
Rex: Did it ever snow in the south as a fluke or something?

Toby: I love the music. Especially "The First Noel," that song they sang when the pups were born. I remember coming in so scared, and then so completely in awe when I saw those five bundles of life lying there with Luna, and I was just completely overwhelmed, and that song brought peace to everything. Or maybe it came with the peace, I don't know. But whenever I think of Chistmas now, I think of that song, and my children.
Luna: Same here. And I also like "Carol of the Bells." It's an old family favorite.
Arrow: Yeah, Mom sings that one really well.
Pete: I'm not into music.
Terry: I like the music, as long as my boys aren't the ones singing it.
Toby: Hey!
Luna: (laughs) She's got you there. Face it, hon, you're a good dog, but you've got your dad's voice. You don't sing, you howl.
Rex: And just what is wrong with howling? It's a very effective way of communicating with other trackers and your master. A good hound may be prized as much for his voice as for his nose, I'll have you know.
Dragon Tamer: (laughs) While they're discussing taste in music, I'll put in my two cents. Myself, I never get tired of Christmas Carols. I have a playlist of them (look up the "Public Access Playlists" topic to find it) currently at 50 songs and still growing.


Toby: I think I'd like to be a police detective, kind of like what I am now.


Luna: (sadly) Actually, we think the humans are going to handle that. He's gotten a lot of attention from them, and they take care of him mostly since he moved into Jenna's house after he broke his leg that time. And when that time comes, which probably won't be too long now, they'll probably bury him somewhere.


Pete: Well, people and dogs say I'm pretty handsome. I'd say eight outa ten.


Haley: He's made a really big change after that incident last January.
Phoebe: And we're not the only ones who think so. We oughta know.
Luna: They are so modest about being so plugged into everything.


Rex: I hear about it happening once in a blue moon, but I never saw it actually happen myself.

Luna: How would you feel if the humans stuffed your grandfather and set him up in a muesum somewhere? Heck, what if they did that to both your grandfathers?

Toby: If you were eaten by a whale, what would be your method of escaping, if possible?

Luna: I really don't know. I think the idea sounds kind of disturbing. I mean, I've seen animals mounted like that before, usually as hunting trophies. And to be honest, it was creepy because they looked and smelled real, but there was nothing, or no one, there. I can't imagine seeing Grandpa Balto like that. Even in his old age, he still seems so alive, even if it's a fading life like charred logs left after a fire that only tell you how big the blaze was. I don't see why humans would do that to him. As for Steele, I can't see anyone taking him for any kind of trophy.


Luna: Tell it some jokes and make it throw up?
Toby: (sarcastically) Heh heh heh. (back to Wolfdog) Uh, I dunno. Praying, maybe? It worked for Jonah.
Luna: Yeah, like anyone's going to throw you overboard.

Toby: Since it's about that time of year, do you have any friends who celebrate Hannakuah?
Luna: If you could make a list of the top five Cleverest and Stupidest things that Toby has ever said, what would they be?

Toby: Is that where they light candles on a thing that looks like a tree branch? Because I think the family down the street does.


Luna: Hm, now there's a good question. I can easily think of five dumb things he's said.

2. You know, I’ve heard it really impresses girls when they see you helping out little kids.
And, as much as I hate to admit it, his little trick to get back at me for coming on that hunt (See Wilderness Hunt Part Two) was pretty good too. And he's pretty creative when he plays with the pups too.

Everyone: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Toby: If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?
Luna: If you could change one thing in Toby's life, what would it be?
Pete: If you could change the way you used to live, would you?

Toby: I think someone asked Pete that same question once.
Pete: Yeah, and I said Russia sounded nice.
Luna: Personally, I'd like to see the statue of Grandpa in New York. Kind of a family trip, you know?
Toby: Count me in.
Luna: (laughs) Toby, in your case it would be a pilgrimage.
Rex: I'll go anywhere warmer than here. Preferably my old home in the southern United States. Or Palestine; Orde's said some interesting things about that place.
Terry: I'd go wherever Rex went, especially where he came from. I'd like to see the old places he talks so much about, and maybe meet some of his relatives.


Toby: Good question. I've had a pretty good life.


Luna: Well, that's a tough question. I guess there's really nothing I'd change about it, except maybe that he could be around more. I know he wants that as much as I do.


Pete: Yeah, I think I would. I made a pretty lousy mess of most of it.
