BaltoSeppalla: I see nothing wrong with writing fiction about the real history, and you are certainly welcome to. I mis-interpreted what you said. Even so, writing the fiction is changing the real history to what you want it to be, so...
Well, I'm sure you can come up with some great stories on that, so more power to you.
Yet, even so, I've seen no fics that are graphic, but only descriptive enough to get the point across. As for the violence...Yes, it might be overdone, but the fics have warnings and if someone ignores them I find little reason to blame the writer.
And not all of the fics on this site include Balto anymore, and they have some violence and slightly sexual parts, so it's not all 'corrupting' Balto.
And yes, I have seen 'trash' but its not the 'bad' fics you're talking about, its the badly-written fics. Less and less storytelling with more and more about incest and gayness... Sad, really.

TikTac, please...
To my knowlege, no one has been banned. You only removed your own fics, and I saw no evidence of flaming. Why remove them?
Also, I agree that good and bad are relative terms that depend on the reader, but that's no reason to turn around and bash BaltoSeppalla.
And will you please stop refering to what I wrote as rules? I've said many times that they are not rules.
As for the banning and flaming you're talking about...
Again, no one has been banned to my knowlege, and I've not heard of flaming here or on the site. If you know of a case, please PM me or one of the other mods so we can stop it. No one should have to indure flaming. No one.
I can't prevent what I don't hear of or see, and I can't be everywhere at once.

Now both of you either drop this issue of banning, flaming, rules, and paranoia... Or take it elsewhere.

Well, people can't write "fanfics" about real history (we'll leave that to the books) People here are writing fanfics about a cartoon BASED on a true story. Does that mean that the movie Balto is disrespecting real history? What about the sequels, huh? They hardly respected the first movie (at least to some people, they didn't). Did history get respect then? I don't think so.

They ruined a good story worse than what anyone here did, by turning what was based on a true story into pure fiction. So why is writing fanfics about a cartoon character any different? It's just as bad or good as a sequel. Just a reminder, not all of us are historians, so not all of us are going to think like one.

Yes, you make a sound argument about the cartoons themselves. And I have had my problems with the way the cartoons butchered the real history (a fact that I've made plain in previous posts elsewhere on this forum). But that's not what we were talking about, was it? We're talking about fan fictions that present sexually-explicit or violent material - which is fundamentally different than the reimagining of a story by Hollywood goofs.

And I REALLY think and believe that people who have written fan fictions which feature that kind of trashy material have done far more damage to the real history than some money-grubbing Hollywood types. It's apples and oranges...

And exactly why can't people write fiction about the real history? I am certainly glad that they haven't (the trashy crap I mean). But writing fictional spin-offs of the real history? To borrow the lament of TikTac: "why can't I write what I want?"

Just so there's no confusion, when I said people "can't write fanfiction on history" I didn't mean that they "can't" as in they're "not allowed" I guess it was a wrong choice of words, but I must say I have never seen "fanfiction" of history (i don't know anyone who would write fanfiction on history, but i know people who will state their interpretation as to what happened back then, etc. but i don't consider that fanfiction)

So I guess I was meaning to say "won't" write fanfiction on history. However, I have seen some pretty sick (sick covers anything people would rather not see) movies based on true stories (Troy? And many others) that *I* think are bad enough to be considered "bad fanfiction waiting to happen" (Wolf Quest?)

And also just so there's no further confusion, I used movies as an example for my argument.

And just for the sake of argument, what about people who write "good" fics about Balto characters they like, but write "bad" fics about characters they don't like? (Aleu for example)

Relationships
Just to say, now I agree with the thing about the incest, but really, I feel that as long as there is a fair warning of such content in a story, then people should be able to acept that. No one says that the people have to read it, and not to mention some people are more grapic than others, it reall just limits the writers ability of both description and creativity.

Cursing
there may not be a need to curse contantly, but in most stories, the cursing just intesifies the situation. Also, no one here has writen a fanfic, in which curse words were just 2 sentences apart, so that really isn't nessecary.

Violence
Violence, is a common thing used in stories to make them epic, interesting. No one is going to write a story about happy-land with pixies and daisies. If people want to use violence they should.

Over all, what I am saying, is that if writers want to write about these things, then no one has the right to pick at them. It's not fair to us. I use all of these elements in my stories, and everyone who has read them likes them. The point is that no one makes people read these types of stories, and if they don't like it, the should keep it to themselves, and find something else to do, because frankly, everyone isn't going to stop, and you should never make public what the majority doesn't want to hear. After all, if people didn't like these stories, we writers wouldn't keep writing them.

But then again we must think, we take all the things out of stories that you have named. It wouldn't be a story now would it or atleast intresting. A story about Balto walking through nome being happy the entire time and nothing happening isn't very intresting. Every story has its share of those things, even though it may not seem perfectly clear to the naked eye. Under it lies, a buried secret and the hidden meaning.

Exactly! Stories need SOME kind of conflict in them. What better way than to make it something someone ISN'T expecting? People are always expecting characters to act the way they always have. Where's the fun in that?

Was Balto 1 a pixie story? How about 3? (I won't bring up 2, as we don't need a whole separate discussion on that cartoon).

I've seen plenty of stories written by fan writers which are adventurous and dramatic, or touching, and are not sugary-sweet.

Give me a break...

Why does the character matter? Doing "bad" fictions about any character stinks.

No one said that placing ANY character in a dramatic, harrowing, even dangerous situation is bad. If anything, such situations are very good reading. But incest? Gratuitous violence (of the kind seen in fan fictions around here), sexually-explicit material? Foul language (especially from BALTO cartoon characters??)? Nope. I don't buy it. And in my opinion, it's definitely NOT good fiction, or good writing.

I never understood this whole conspiracy with the higher-rated fics anyways because I never liked the idea of showing agression of ANY sort towards other writers or others in general.. so I REALLY LIKE this policy a LOT and will continue to hang around here because I consider this the BEST fansite I have ever and probably will ever visit..

So once again!

EXCELLENT JOB MODS!

Whoah. I didn't expect that to end like that.

Umm...I guess we're in full comprehension of everyone here...on each side of the debate. Maybe we don't agree (no one says we all have to), but at least we have each had a chance to say our peace, and be heard (seen?).

Well, as Steet moves forward to what decisions he's going to make about the site in the coming week or so, I guess we'll all have our answer...for good or ill, depending upon how we each feel. Though I suspect that Steet will work out a compromise to suit the best interests of the majority, and to try his best to keep everyone happy. Can't say I blame him.

the only issue I have with your statment to me, is that we arn't talking about the balto movies, were talking about fanfics, and the writers all have our own levels of how graphic a fanfic will be. No one is making you read the stuff, we writers should be able to use the content and graphics that we want, and if someone gets offended it's thier fault, we make warnings ahead of time, what else can we do?

First of all, we are talking about fan fics which happen to include characters from the Balto cartoons...even though I fully realize there are also fan fics here that don't include ANY of them (why they're posted on this site, however...a BALTO site, is beyond me). What I said had total relevance within the context of the discussion.

THAT is an excuse...and typical of a liberal-minded writer. The moderators and administrators of the site, in truth, have a responsibility to unswervingly uphold the "kid-friendly" aspect of this site. And that includes making it IMPOSSIBLE for anyone, under a certain age, to read fan fictions with sexually-explicit, deviant or violent content. Warnings and disclaimers are all well and good, but they are not a deterrent. That much is a fact. AND the writers have a responsibility to respect that boundary...and the rules which the site administrator (web master) has EVERY RIGHT to establish and enforce.

Take the "kid-friendly" moniker away, and your argument holds water. Keep it on the site, and it's a pointless argument.

(This from the person who wants to enforce, to dire consequences, the punishment of "art thieves"...which, I must admit, I do agree with short of the dire consequences you state in your "location" information. Rules are not simply made to be convenient some of the time...when they just suit you.)

*SIGH* I thought, after Cat's last response, and mine, we were done with this. But I suppose there's always gonna be someone who has to get the last word in.
