I've recently moved to a nice 4 acre property and I really REALLY want one, but after all I've been reading in vet books, I'm not sure we could ever afford one! A million shots a year...they make it like the horse is nothing but a pin-cushion! Seriously, if your horse gets chilly; it dies. If it gets too warm; it dies. If you BREATH the wrong way; it dies. Gosh, are horses really that sensitive? Please, I know 97% of you own horses. I need info on this ASAP.
*laughs* Don't listen to vet books. You get real information at "dump" farms. Go to the nearest farm that has horses where stuff laying around the barn and the horses in the fields look muddy. Go to the owner and ask, "How tough is a horse?", if they haven't threatened to call the police yet.
When you live in Eastern Kentucky, you know how tough animals are. It takes a quite a few degrees past the freezing mark before it dies. You only have to worm them every few months and they rarely need a shot. If they do get sick, just give them a shot of penicillan and they'll be fine. When they get a cut, just rub some cream on the cut and let it go. If the horses gets really sick or gets a real deep cut, call the vet. Trust me.

So, this topic is still alive and kickin' I see? Well, since my last post...guess what? I finally got a horse! She's a 10 year old registered half-arabian paint. She's about 16 hh and her reg. name is Apache Music, but we just call her Nita. I haven't ridden her yet, because she was neglected her whole life, and was basically a rescue (whet else do you call a horse you get for free?). She's gained a lot of wieght since we got her and her hooves have been cared for (she hadn't had her hooves trimmed since she was 4!) She's much happier, but she's grown very fond of me, and I'm the only human she'll allow in her pen. She tried to attack her previous owner when he came to see her. I have a lot of work to do with her, but it'll be worth it She's built like a cob, has the attitude of a thoroughbred, and has big, strong feet. I just know someday, we're gonna tear up those trails!

rolla_wolf9 - That's one real beauty you've got there. I used to go riding, but after a nasty fall I stopped. (Ironically, I didn't fall off a horse, I actually fell out of a laundry basket and cracked my pelvis!) I can remember having such fun. Horses are wonderful and useful animals.

rolla_wolf9 - OMG!! she is such a beautiful paint!! I remember the first time i saw an Arabian paint, i mistook him for cow (i do not mean to be insulting, but i was young). She's so beautiful, and i am sure, that in time, she will make a great horse. Take care of her, you definitely deserve her after what i have read about you, and she is very lucky to find an owner like you.
As for me, I do not own a horse, but I really want to. Ive only been riding for more than half a year, but i get serious instruction in English style. For the past 3 months I have been getting 7 hours of riding a week (i do not know if that sounds a lot, but in New England and where I live it seems like a lot). I absolutely love it!!! I practice dressage and show jumping. My horse, Captain (well the one i have been leasing) is 16...yeah, hes a great horse though...He is a thoroughbred with some dutch warmblood in him....He'll end up being a lesson horse because of neglect and maltreatment when he was still young. I know he would have made a wonderful show horse.....
Hopefully, i'll make it big one day
